The Proclamation of the WordThe First Reading: read by Maria MorellatoA reading from the Book of Ruth

In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country ofMoab, he and his wife and two sons. The name of the man was Elimelechand the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons wereMahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. Thesetook Moabite wives; the name of one was Orpah and the name of theother Ruth. When they had lived there for about ten years, both Mahlonand Chilion also died, so that the woman was left without her two sons orher husband.

Then she started to return with her daughters-in-law from the

country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lordhad had consideration for his people and given them food. So she set outfrom the place where she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of Judah. ButNaomi said to her two daughters-in-law, ‘Go back each of you to yourmother’s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealtwith the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband.’ Then she kissed them, andthey wept aloud. They said to her, ‘No, we will return with you to yourpeople.’ But Naomi said, ‘Turn back, my daughters, why will you go withme? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become yourhusbands? Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old tohave a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if Ishould have a husband tonight and bear sons, would you then wait untilthey were grown? Would you then refrain from marrying? No, mydaughters, it has been far more bitter for me than for you, because thehand of the Lord has turned against me.’ Then they wept aloud again.Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.So she said, ‘See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and toher gods; return after your sister-in-law.’ But Ruth said,‘Do not press me to leave youor to turn back from following you!

Where you go, I will go;where you lodge, I will lodge;

your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

Where you die, I will die—there will I be buried.

May the Lord do thus and so to me,and more as well,

if even death parts me from you!’

When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she saidno more to her.

Ruth 1:1-18Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

All Thanks be to God.

The Second Reading: read by Raf EllisA reading from the Book of Hebrews

But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that havecome, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thusobtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, with thesprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiledso that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God,purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!

Hebrews 9:11-14Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. All Thanks be to God.

9Gradual Hymn All stand for the Gospel. Before the reading of the Gospel, thefirst half of the Gradual Hymn is sung.

The Gospel — Twenty-Fourth Sunday After Pentecost

Deacon The Lord be with you.All And also with you.Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

according to MarkAll Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with oneanother, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, ‘Whichcommandment is the first of all?’ Jesus answered, ‘The first is, “Hear,O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord yourGod with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, “You shall love yourneighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater thanthese.’ Then the scribe said to him, ‘You are right, Teacher; you havetruly said that “he is one, and besides him there is no other”; and “tolove him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with allthe strength”, and “to love one’s neighbour as oneself”,—this is muchmore important than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.’ When Jesussaw that he answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from thekingdom of God.’ After that no one dared to ask him any question.

Mark 1228-34

The Great Thanksgiving / Eucharistic Prayer 1 (DoNW)

Celebrant The Lord be with you.All And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God,for you created all things. You formed us in your own image:male and female you created us.When we turned away from you in sin,you did not cease to care for us,but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarahgave the promise of a blessing to all nations.Through Moses you led your peoplefrom bondage into freedom;through the prophetsyou renewed your promise of salvation.

Celebrant Therefore, with them, and with all your saintswho have served you in every age,we give thanks and raise our voicesto proclaim the glory of your name

19

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comesin the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest,Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise.in the fullness of time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ,to share our human nature,to live and die as one of us,to reconcile us to you,the God and Father of all.He healed the sickand ate and drank with outcasts and sinners;he opened the eyes of the blindand proclaimed the good news of your kingdomto the poor and to those in need.In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.

On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you,he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “ Take, eat:this is my body which is given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me."

Celebrant After supper he took the cup of wine;and when he had given thanks,he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:this is my blood of the new covenantwhich is shed for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Whenever you drink it,do this for the remembrance of me.”

Celebrant Gracious God,his perfect sacrificedestroys the power of sin and death;by raising him to lifeyou give us life for evermore. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith.

All Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

Celebrant Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory,we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup.Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this tablemay be one body and one holy people,a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.
