Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Next Saturday will be an extra special day here at St. John’s. Coadjutor Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda will confirm our 79 teens at Confirmation Masses at 11am and 2pm, and then plans to join us also at the 5:30pm Mass celebrating Fr. Ray’s 40th Ordination Anniversary. For those unable to attend these celebrations, please remember our “Confirmandi” and Fr. Ray in your prayers. Due to the special events of the day, we will NOT have CONFESSIONS either at 1pm or after the 5:30pm Mass. Also, PLEASE REMEMBER that Saturday is a business day, and cars will be towed if parked illegally in the lot behind the DelloRusso Building or even in legal parking spaces at Bradley Dental Group on Bradley Ave. during their normal business hours.

+++ Thank you to all those who continue to make their pledges to our “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign. We remain the leader of all the parishes in the Archdiocese in Phase 1 of this Campaign, with pledges now totalling $689,446.00 or over 65% of our goal of $1,066,452.00. Payments on pledges already total $155,760.84. The payment total is important, because this means that we have satisfied our Annual Appeal (Works of Mercy) goal and now have $31,880.42 coming back to us in October. We have already signed contracts to replace the two heating/cooling units for Conlon Hall and are soliciting bids to replace the Church boiler, so we will need this money (and more of it) to cover the costs of these essential replacements. So, if you have not made a pledge, payable over four years, please consider doing so now to help us as we start our parish repair projects. Pledges may be dropped off at the rectory, placed in the collection basket, or sent directly to the Archdiocese. I count on each family to make some contribution to our parish and our Archdiocese through this Campaign.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

In terms of artistic representation, the Holy Spirit is certainly the most under-appreciated person of the Holy Trinity, most often depicted as a bird often lost in a scene of Jesus’ baptism, or maybe as a bit of flame hovering over the heads of the disciples at Pentecost. And what is true in art is also sometimes true in our theology. In the Apostles’ Creed, we find a summary, albeit brief, of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, while the Spirit seems to get only a single mention. But appearances can be deceiving. We should understand everything that follows in the Creed—the church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting—as the works of the Spirit. But how many of us actually do that? Do we, like so much of our art, focus on the Father and the Son to the detriment of the Spirit? So on the feast of Pentecost, it is good to reflect on the role of the Spirit in our lives, and on how the fruits of the Spirit that Paul speaks of in Galatians enrich our lives and make it possible for us to be followers of Jesus. More than simply a bird or a bit of flame, in all our doings the Spirit accompanies us and unites us to other believers, guiding us into all truth. “Come, Holy Spirit, and be our helper and guide. Fill us with the fire of love so that we might be true followers of Jesus.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.” I Corinthians 12: 4-6

By giving each of us different gifts, God made sure that the Church would have the right combination of time, talent, and treasure that was needed to do His work. However, if one of us does not utilize our gifts, God’s plan goes unfulfilled. Some important work is left undone.
