Today is the last Sunday in the Western Church year and we celebrate the Feast of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the Sovereign King. Then, no sooner than we have celebrated the last Sunday of the Year, the feast of Christ the King, we will celebrate the First Sunday of Advent, and begin the time of preparation for the great Nativity of Our Savior. Our Catholic Christian faith and its Liturgical practices proclaim to a world hungry for meaning that Jesus Christ is the "Alpha", (the first letter of the Greek alphabet) and the "Omega" (the last letter), the beginning and the end. He is the Giver, the Governor and the fulfillment of all time. In Him the whole world is being made new.
When Pilate asked Jesus if he was a king, Jesus’ answer was: Yes, I am but my kingdom is not of this world. Kings of this world are into pomp, glory and military might. Christ our king was born poor in a stable and died on a cross. He had no place to lay down his head. Christ our king mixed with the poor, outcaste and sinners. His values are of justice, compassion, forgiveness and service. Christ our king says: I came to serve and not be served. Christ is a king who loved us so much that he died for us. There is no greater love than this to lay your life for another. The philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard once said: “ When a tyrant dies, his rule is over; when a martyr dies his rule begins.”
As we begin the new year of church calendar next Sunday, let us renew our pledge of loyalty to Christ our king and avoid the temptation of secular kings who are into ego and power trips. In baptism, we have been anointed as king, prophet and priest. We are kings when we feed the hungry, visit the sick and welcome the stranger as today’s gospel tells us. On judgement day, Christ our king will say: “Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Have fun & build lasting family memories, lighting the candles of the Advent wreath, praying the special prayers as a family and anticipating the arrival of Christmas. The Covenant of Love Ministry invites you to start or continue this tradition with your family. After all masses on the weekend of Dec 2-3, the Ministry will be selling Advent Wreaths and Candles (while supplies last). If the weather is dry, you will find us in the Gathering Space.
