Perhaps the greatest obstacle to welcoming the stranger is that many Americans have forgotten their immigrant past. "Nativism" assumes that there is just one image of a "real American" and that immigrants either cannot live up to it or willfully refuse to do so. Originally directed against Catholics of all sorts, today such nativism can be seen in a cam-paign against "multiculturalism" in all its forms, on the premise that reverence for distinctive traditions and histories undermines the unity of American society. Like the Catholic "Americanizers" of the nineteenth century, who opposed the establishment of national parishes, the critics of multiculturalism today want immigrants and other distinctive groups to shed their languages, customs, and identities as quickly as possible, to become Americans "just like the rest of us." But "the rest of us" are, in fact, a culturally plural society—Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and Muslims; believers and non-believers; Southerners and Northerners; Irish, Italian, and Mexican—proud of our heritages and proud to be Americans, all at once.

A kind of nativism appears in the Church itself when established members insist that there is just one way to worship, one set of familiar hymns, one small handful of familiar devotions, one way to organize a parish community, one lan-guage for all—and that immigrants must adapt to that way of doing things. In doing so, such nativists forget not only that their ancestors spoke different languages and worshiped in different ways not long ago, but that their devo-tions and familiar saints, even their patterns of church organization, sprang from encounters between differing tradi-tions within the Church.

The SERRA Club of DuPage, a na-tional organization supporting voca-tions to the priesthood and religious life, invites your to join them on Mon-day, July 20, 2015, at St. Petronille Parish, 420 Glenwood, Glen Ellyn. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with Rosary and Mass in the Church. Dinner will follow in the Parish Center.

Guest speaker at the dinner, Brother Alan Parham, FSC, will share his voca-tion story. As a young man, trying to decide his future, Brother Alan tried many things including an acting career teaching in Barranquilla, Colombia and working in an African American parish in St. Louis. There, Brother Alan began to be concerned about the

struggles of young people and began to believe that Catholic Schools were a more viable option for them than public schools. At the same time, he met the Christian Brothers and felt at home each time he visited them, and because the Brothers were reaching out to minority teenagers and others, he decided to apply. That was 25 years ago, and he has never regret-ted joining them. Today, Brother Alan serves as Vocations Director for the Christian Brothers.

To find our more about SERRA or to make a reservation for the dinner, please contact Joann Carr: [email protected] or 630-665-0994.

Stewardship Thought for the Week In today’s Scripture passages, those privileged to do God’s work find it difficult to complete their mission. God directs the prophet Amos to prophesy to the people of Israel, in spite of the priest Amaziah’s opposition. In St. Mark’s Gospel, Jesus commissions the Twelve Apostles to go forth and preach repentance, heal the sick, and drive out demons. He forewarns that they will face resistance and even rejection. St. Paul reminds us of the strength we have in Christ’s blessings. As Christian stewards, we know the cost of discipleship. Our actions to do God’s will may also be resisted or rejected. However, the Lord’s gift of grace encourages and strengthens us to carry out His work regardless of the obstacles we may encounter.
