GOD’S WORD TODAY The journey of faith is not easy. Like the young man in today’s Gospel, we often ask, “What more must I do?” And the answer, of course, is that there is always more that we can do. Sometimes we get discouraged because we think that “more” means doing things that are extraordinary, like becoming missionaries, or emptying our savings accounts in order to give it all to the poor. The “more” that is asked of us is often very ordinary. Are we being asked simply to pay more attention to our spouse or our kids? Are we being asked to take stewardship more seriously? Are we being asked to strengthen our friendship with the Lord by taking more seriously the obligation to celebrate Mass each Sunday? Let us keep the “more” that is being asked of us in the realm of possibility. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, © J. S. Paluch Co.

PASTOR’S CORNER Today’s responsorial psalm offers praise and petition to God asking that God “teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” In the gospel passage Jesus is teaching his disciples how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God, yet reminds them that all things are possible for God. True discipleship requires that we rely totally on God for the strength and wisdom to fulfill the plan and will of God for our lives. Christ the teacher and Christ the servant keeps showing us the way as we seek His wisdom and guidance each day. Saint John XXIII offers us his wisdom so that we might ask God to continue to prosper the work of our hands:
“So you are My Master and I am your creature. I am nothing without you, and through you I am all that I am. I can do nothing without you; indeed, if at every moment you did not support me I should slip back whence I came, into nothingness.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION How did the church dealt with “daily sins” in the first five centuries? As devout and observant as they were, our early fathers and mothers in faith could not have been all that different from us. Maybe they looked the other way when the grocer threw an extra fig in the shopping basket, or had a wandering eye for the widow next door, or had a taste for too much ale, or didn’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. First of all, there was the Eucharist. The words are familiar: “This is the cup of my blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sin.” Especially by participating in Communion from the cup, forgiveness was achieved. Eucharist was, and remains, the sacrament of reconciliation par excellence, the sign and source of unity with Christ. There were other helps along the way: “fraternal” correction, or the course corrections we offer one another in love, prayer, fasting, works of mercy. St. Augustine listed endurance of suffering, forgiveness of insults, and added the praying of the Lord’s Prayer in the liturgy. He felt that the public praying of the Our Father on Sunday and its daily use in private prayer was an essential remedy and the reason why everyone was not a candidate for canonical penance. Inherited from Augustine’s practice, the Lord’s Prayer in our Communion Rite still has the same purpose, preparing us for receiving and becoming the Body of Christ.

RESPECT LIFE MONTH “We are meant to be interdependent, to serve each other in humility, and to walk together in suffering.”
—USCCB 2015-16 Respect Life Program “Maggie’s Story: Living like Dad”
COMMUNITY ROSARY On Sunday, October 11, at 10:00 a.m. the PSR classes will be praying the Rosary together in honor of this month of Mary and for the sanctity of life. All parishioners are invited to join us in this special morning of prayer.
FIRST STEP FOR CHANGE This weekend, you are reminded to pick up a First Step for Change bottle if you still wish to participate in this project. The funds collected through this effort will be used to help low-income mothers-to-be give their children a healthy start in life. If an expectant mother does not have access to food, shelter, clothing and essential items— like cribs or car seats— her baby is at-risk from the very beginning. Take home a bottle today, fill it with spare change, and make a difference in the lives of low-income pregnant women and families with small children.
ALL SOULS DAY Our “Book of Life” is in the sanctuary throughout the month of October for you to add the names of loved ones who have passed away. All deceased of the parish and our families will be remembered throughout the month of November at our celebrations. On the weekend of Oct. 31/Nov. 1, the parish will hold a special remembrance for all our deceased parishioners at Masses.
The Parish Community of St. Joseph’s will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick the weekend of after each of the Masses the weekend of November 7/8. This sacrament (like all sacraments) is a community celebration. It is for those with sickness whether it be physically, mentally or spiritually. Anointing is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death but is intended for those asking for the healing touch of Christ. Today we are all aware that tensions, fear, and anxiety not only affect our mind but our body as well.
Anyone wishing to receive the Sacrament of Anointing is welcome
to remain after Mass for this special blessing.
Next weekend we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year we are invited to support the 1,150 of the youngest dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and please be generous in next weekend’s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.
OUR COMMON HOME Laudato Si discussion group on Pope Francis encyclical will begin on Thursday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Meeting Dates: Oct. 15, 22, 29; Nov.5, 12, 19; Dec. 3, 10. Please register with Parish Office prior.
4C’s COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Your help for families in need is greatly appreciated. Items that are needed include: canned and boxed food items, laundry and cleaning supplies, and paper and products. Thanks for the helping hand! APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE BAKE SALE
Next weekend, October 17/18, the Appalachian Experience group will hold a bake sale to raise funds for their trip to Clintwood, Virginia, June 18-25, 2016, to participate in the St. Joseph’s Housing Repair Program. All bakers, our faithful bakers and anyone who would like to
begin baking, may drop off their baked goods in the Narthex before the Mass they attend. Thank you!
We’re also looking for sponsorships for our volunteers — it costs $275.00 per person for the fee to pay for lodging, materials, and related expenses. Plus, gas and food expenses are needed for the group. For more information, please contact Dan & Sean Fejes (330-274-2481), pick up a flyer from the Narthex, and/or check out our website under Ministries & Organizations. CHURCH CLEANERS NEEDED Won’t you consider joining our small but mighty crew to help clean throughout the year? Ideally, you are scheduled with another person about every six weeks to vacuum and straighten the church and Narthex. Men, women, and even older children are welcome. Supplies are provided and cleaning may take place any time at your convenience. Partners don’t necessarily have to clean at the same time. For more information or if you are interested in volunteering, please call the Parish Office (330-274-2253).
BREAD OF LIFE BAKERS – THANK YOU!
We also want to encourage ways to make Sunday Mass “active.” Some of these are through the ministries of usher, reader, extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, choir membership. Others are through behind the
scenes services like church cleaning, laundering Mass linens, sewing baptismal garments, working on church decor for seasons and holidays, composing the “prayers of the faithful.” As life makes you available we encourage you to an active service at Mass. PRISON MINISTRY RETREAT WEEKEND The Catholic prison ministry team at Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg is holding a Spiritual Weekend Retreat November 5-8 for Catholic inmates. In addition to your prayers for their fourth successful weekend retreat, the ministry team is asking for donations of cookies. The participants love cookies—the bigger the better! This is the only time they are able to receive these special treats. If you’d like to donate cookies, simply drop them off on disposable plates at the Parish Office October 26-30. Please call the Parish Office (330-274-2253) or Pat Smith (330-274-8335) with any questions.
PURPOSE: The main focus of the council is to plan for the future of the parish. We work to determine what the needs of the parish will be in the coming years and put the resources in place to meet those needs. Council very rarely becomes involved in the day-to-day operations of the parish. These functions are left to the groups and committees who are empowered to handle these items. The Finance Committee handles the parish finances; the Worship Committee organizes and coordinates the liturgical aspects of the parish, etc.

Council
Parish
It is with deep gratitude that we express thanks to St. Joseph parishioners, both present and past, who baked the substantial bread used at our Sunday Masses for so many years. While the decision was made to discontinue the practice at this time, we want to recognize the quiet and faithful service in the cause of “active participation” in the Mass that our substantial bread bakers represented.
