St. Joseph Parish The Vigil December 2nd, 2018 ROONEY TUNES: FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: This weekend we begin the first season of the Church’s liturgical year. It is a me of preparaon that helps us focus our hearts and minds to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of me and also to the anniversary of Our Lord’s Navity on 25 th December. I suspect that many of us are use to seeing Advent as a me of preparing for the Lord’s Navity ra- ther than for the Second Coming! Come to think of it, do any of us even think of the Second Coming? The final days of Advent (17-14 December) focus our preparaon for the celebraons of the Navity. Advent has the sense of being a ‘modified Lent’. In church the celebrant is wearing the purple vestments, there’s very lile decoraons; the readings have a more somber tone to them – and the preaching is no beer! Part of our preparaons might involve going to confession. You will find the mes for con- fessions in the bullen. Our parish will host a Vicariate wide Penance Service on Thurs- day evening, 13 th December at 7:00. There will be a whole bunch of priests here for you to take your pick! UNLEASH THE GOSPEL (UTG): Last month many of us took the 6 Day Challenge. The aim of the challenge, in part, is to help us prepare for The Lord’s Navity. Normally, that’s the me of year when people who don’t usually parcipate at Mass, come to Mass. So the hope is that when they come to Mass, they’ll noce something different! Why? Because we’ll be more welcoming than we usually are. One of the things that I’ve noced, and have be told by visitors, is that we are a welcoming parish. When folks visit me from former parishes, they will, without excepon, menon how welcomed they felt coming into our church. When asked to idenfy the most telling trait of a vibrant parish, the naonally acclaimed preacher Fr. Bill Bausch named one trait: hospitality. The preaching might be incredi- ble, the music breathtaking, but if people don’t feel welcomed – they’ll not be back! Father Bausch is a rered priest of the dio- cese of Trenton, New Jersey. The priest went on to emphasis the role of ushers in creang a welcoming atmosphere. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: Saturday, 8 th December we celebrate our naon's pa- tronal feast day: The Immaculate Concep- on Of The Blessed Virgin Mary. The feast is a holy day of obligaon. A Vigil Mass will be celebrated 7:00 pm Friday 7 th December. On the feast day, Mass will be celebrated 8:30 am. The feast affords us the perfect opportunity to pray for the spiritual and material welfare of our country. I hope you will plan to join us for the celebraon. WOMEN’S GUILD: Next Sunday our parish Women’s Guild will gather for a blessing at the 10:00 Mass. The Guild will be celebrang their 100 th anniversary of service to the parish! On behalf of the enre parish I extend my hearelt thanks to the Guild for their years of dedicated service to the parish Wishing all of us a blessed Advent! Father Rooney.

ROONEY TUNES: FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: This weekend we begin the first season of the Church’s liturgical year. It is a time of preparation that helps us focus our hearts and minds to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of Our Lord’s Nativity on 25th December. I suspect that many of us are use to seeing Advent as a time of preparing for the Lord’s Nativity ra-ther than for the Second Coming! Come to think of it, do any of us even think of the Second Coming? The final days of Advent (17-14 December) focus our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity. In church the celebrant is wearing the purple vestments, there’s very little decorations; the readings have a more somber tone to them – and the preaching is no better! Faith Formation Corner

Women’s Guild

Women’s Guild members, present and past, including honorary members

We are celebrating our 100th anniversary this year. On Sunday, December 9th, 2018 the 10:00 mass will be for us so all are encouraged to attend. Breakfast buffet at Truago will follow. The cost is $10 a person . If you’d like to go to breakfast please tell Lee DiPonio, 734-671-0741, so she has a headcount.

Our Christmas dinner will also be a dinner celebration of our anniversary. It’s being held on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the Grand Event. The cost to each of us will be $10.00 paid to Lee DiPonio prior to the event. When you pay Lee tell her your dinner choice: Beef tips, stuffed chicken breast or salmon. There will be no collecting money at the event so either pay her at our November meeting, put in an envelope marked Women’s Guild dinner and put in the collection basket or mail it to her at 2262 Ashby Road, Trenton, Michigan, 48183. The Women’s Guild will be picking up the balance on our dinners and included is one cocktail. Lee is also ordering a cake for us for dessert.

We have so much history to be proud of so let’s together honor that history at the mass and the dinner!

St. Joseph Faith Formation Students do more in learning about their faith and growing in their relationship with God than what is “caught” from a textbook alone. Putting their faith into ACTION is Mary Parrino and Sharon McFarland’s Fourth Grade Tuesday night class is reminded of the lesson to help others in need. These beautiful blankets will go to guests at Applewood Nursing Home for extra warmth and comfort this winter.

This month finds forty-two children making their First Reconciliation, and then beginning their preparations for their First Communion that will be in May. Please join me in praying for them in the beautiful Sacraments where they will be receiving the Grace of our Lord. We also pray for their Parents and Teachers in the role they play during this beautiful time of their Faith Journey. God’s Blessings for the week ahead, Dennae Cataldo, Director of Faith Formation [email protected]

SUPPORT THE RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS! A donor writes “Your flyer touched my heart-seeing the retired religious, such memories surfaced.” Do you remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Please give to next week's collection

Volunteers are needed to help make the holidays bright! We are going again to serve at the Detroit All Saints Soup kitchen this Wednesday DEC 5 and we will be accepting donations of bread, milk, or dessert as well as financial contributions to support this important ministry to Christ’s needy brothers and sisters.

St Joseph will be offering Oplatki for those who are inter-ested! Please stop by the Parish Office if you would like some. We are asking for a free will offering.

Unleash the Gospel

Guidepost 10 Calling Upon the Advocate

Prayer and intercession are indispensable components of the new evangelization, since God the Holy Spirit is the principal agent for unleashing the Gospel. Prayer is the way we access the unlimited divine power of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. The main reason Synod 16 was itself an experience of a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit was that it was preceded by a whole year of fervent prayer.

As at the first Pentecost, still today, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Queen of the Apos-tles, leads us in prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit and inspires us with a sure confi-dence that the Lord hears and will not fail to answer. Let us call upon her intercession that the Lord may bring about an unprecedented harvest in the Archdiocese of De-troit.

We do need to arm ourselves for spiritual combat, recognizing that "Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour". The faithful need help in understanding how to resist the evil one, exercising the authority they have in Christ, calling on the Holy Spirit for assistance. We must use all the weap-ons the Church has given us: prayer, especially the rosary, Scripture, the sacraments, and sacramentals such as holy water.

Reflective Question: Do I pray for the assistance of the Advocate?

Hello Parishioners,

Our fundraising drive to replace the multipurpose floor in the Activity Center gym is off to a nice start. We are averaging $155 per donation, and we are incredibly grateful for your generosity. We have heard from a number of people who would prefer to write a check to the campaign instead of going online to the GoFundMe website. While you can still visit https://www.gofundme.com/stjoesac and donate using a credit card, you can also write a check and place it in the offertory collection basket on the weekends. To do so, please fill out the coupon below, make your check out to ST. JOSEPH ATHLETIC CLUB, place the check and the coupon in a separate envelope (not your weekly offering envelope). Please write ACTIVITY CENTER on the envelope. We will send you a receipt for your tax purposes once we receive your donation. As a reminder, any donation over $150 will be permanently recognized in a display in the Activity Center once the project it complete. Thank you again for supporting this project that benefits the entire parish. Sincerely Yours in Christ, Ted Borowicz – St. Joseph Athletic Club

Daily Readings and Reflections

December 2nd FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A sober reckoning Happy Advent! Although this season

shares Lent’s purple color, it’s not meant to evoke the penitential atmos-phere of that other preparatory sea-son. Yet Advent does invite us to a more contemplative mood. Apart

from the dizzying holiday pace of De-cember, we make room to ponder a

mystery. God is with us: as a baby born to mortal limits, as the boundless Lord of the end-times, and as the Spir-

it that accompanies us right now, through all our days. Our times give us many reasons to be afraid. The perfect

love of God-with-us casts out every fear.

Today's readings: Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2; Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 (3). “People will die of fright in anticipa-

tion of what is coming upon the world.”

December 3rd MEMORIAL OF FRANCIS XAVIER,

PRIEST Dress to impress

One of the founding members of the Jesuits, Saint Francis Xavier (1506-52) is considered to have been one of the greatest missionaries since the apos-tles. Appointed to re-evangelize por-tions of the Far East, Francis placed himself with the outcasts, preaching to the sick and dying at hospitals and orphans and slaves in the street. He

understood that, were the fire of Christianity to spread through the

East, the kindling must begin at the base of society. Rather than arriving

like a royal ambassador, Francis clothed himself with rags and made his home in the lowliest shelters. His example shows us how humble ap-

pearances can be the greatest tool for bringing the message of Christ to oth-

ers. Today's readings:

Isaiah 2:1-5; Matthew 8:5-11 (175). "Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel

have I found such faith.” December 4th

MEMORIAL OF JOHN DAMASCENE, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

Your cup will overflow God does not send us away hungry. Remember this promise of faith the next time you find yourself feeling

empty. During times of spiritual dry-

ness, trust that you will eventually be fulfilled. As Saint John Damascene

observed, as created beings, humans are subject to flux: “By flux,” writes

this seventh-century church doctor, “I mean . . . depletion, for dry things and wet things and spirit suffer depletion, and require repletion.” The best thing you can do to restore your soul is to

continue to pray and to do good works. As you feed others, you will soon find yourself satisfied as well.

Today's readings: Isaiah 11:1-10; Luke 10:21-24 (176). "Blessed are the eyes that see what

you see.” December 5th

ADVENT WEEKDAY On top of the world

“We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountain-

top,” Martin Luther King Jr. said in his last public speech. “I just want to do

God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked

over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land.” In scripture, mountains are

sacred places; the mountaintop is the epitome of the experiences that show us the glory of God. From that vantage point, everything fades away and we see like God—with a clarity that gives

glory and can change the world. Today's readings:

Isaiah 25:6-10a; Matthew 15:29-37 (177).

“On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples.”

December 6th MEMORIAL OF NICHOLAS, BISHOP

He comes bearing gifts Saint Nicholas spoke out against here-sies and was imprisoned for a time for his beliefs. His faithfulness is exempla-

ry, but charity remains his signature virtue. What started with Nicholas

tossing a few bags of coins into a poor family’s yard has been transformed

over centuries of retelling, embellish-ing, grafting, and adapting into the

magical tales of Ole Saint Nick (Father Christmas, Santa Claus, Kris Kringle), whose yearly ambition is to deliver

gifts to every girl and boy. We may not bring out our best robes and a fatted

calf for the annual return of Santa, but cookies and milk serve nicely to show our gratitude to Saint Nick for inspir-

ing ole souls of every stripe to be jolli-er and more generous.

Today's readings: Isaiah 26:1-6; Matthew 7:21, 24-27

(178). "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heav-en, but only the one who does the will

of my Father in heaven.” December 7th

MEMORIAL OF AMBROSE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

We’re expecting! Expectant mothers and fathers hear

the stories of the coming of the Christ child with new ears. They know what it was like for Mary, large with child

and focused on an inward life; and for Joseph, large with anxiety and focused outward on protecting and providing

for this expanding family. Yet even those of us who do not anticipate car-

rying an infant in our arms anytime soon are Christ-bearers, as Saint Am-brose (c. 340-397) reminds us: “Christ has only one mother in the flesh, but we all bring forth Christ in faith.” Pre-

pare a place for the newborn! Today's readings:

Isaiah 29:17-24; Matthew 9:27-31 (179).

"Let it be done for you according to your faith."

December 8th SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE

CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Past and present Advent is a good time to ponder the mysteries of Mary, and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (which celebrates Mary’s conception) is a

good place to start. According to Pope Pius IX’s 1854 solemn decree on the Immaculate Conception, “Mary was preserved exempt from all stain of

original sin by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the

merits of Jesus Christ.” Here’s the mystery: God preserved Mary from sin

through the love of her son. What does this mean? It means that God works in the past as well as the pre-sent. It means further that our own past wounds and deeds—which we

thought were cast in stone—are avail-able to be transformed, too. What in

your past needs healing? Today's readings:

Genesis 3:9-15, 20; Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12; Luke 1:26-38 (689).

“The angel said to her, ‘Nothing will be impossible with God.’”

December 1/2: Youth Ministry A workshop focused on “How to Run a Youth Retreat” will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit on Thursday, December 13. Mary Wilkerson and Mike Chamberland of BOLD Ministries will share their best practices and tips for plan-ning and executing dynamic retreats. Participants will gain new skills, resources, and renewed confidence to prepare their own youth retreats. Your CSA gifts allow the Archdiocese of Detroit to minister to those who foster the spiritual and personal growth of our youth and young adults and empower them to become disciples of Jesus Christ and actively witness their faith.
