Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

So many blessings! Despite the craziness going on around us, good things are happening here in this corner of God’s kingdom. Let me recount some of our parish’s recent blessings:

Lots of baptisms in recent weeks and several to come!

Our seminarian Tyler led an amazing Bible study the past two months….so many fruits.

The annual Hidden Paradise server trip took place with over 50 servers attending.

The cafeteria has been repainted. The back-to-school plan is well in motion and

all are excited to return!! The middle school Holiday World trip was well

attended (over 40 kids). The high school Holiday World trip took place this

past week and also drew a good crowd. Fr. Mike and Sem. Tyler led the Brute Days event

for 55 teenage boys thinking about seminary and it took place largely here at St. Vincent.

Vacation Bible School took place this past week and was a HUGE success! We had lots of kids, though not as many as usual on account of the COVID. Many thanks to Billy for the planning!

Our 5th Grade trip took place on Thursday. We went to Brown Co. hiking and had Mass out there.

Awards night for the school was last Tuesday. It was nice to celebrate our 3-5th graders’ achievements.

We took the fourth annual boat trip with the youth and had Mass on the boat. It was a GREAT day. We had 15+ on the wait list.

Billy, Tyler, Mrs. Disser and I have hosted two lock-ins at the school for Reverse Raffle winners.

Our adoration chapel reopened over a month ago and folks are praying in front of JESUS again!!

The St. Vincent de Paul Society store, now one year old, reopened last Saturday. They broke a record for one day sales, selling over 600 items, and almost broke a record for attendance!

We are getting read to celebrate our church building’s 112th anniversary.

As we keep moving forward, we continue to do so prudently and carefully. But we must keep on. We CANNOT let COVID-19 stop us from “being church.” What blessings to pray together, celebrate together, and serve together!

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Sophia Romy OreGamero, baptized Saturday, July 11th at St. Joes by Fr. Mike.

St. Joe Jog—July 27

As you know, this event normally takes place festival weekend, but sadly we weren't able to do that this year on that weekend due to COVID-19. Instead, the St. Joe Jog is a 5K run/walk that will take place on Monday, July 27, 2020 at 6:00pm at St. Joe, right before the Pool Day celebration, also at St. Joe. After the run, we will have hot dogs and other treats!! There is also the option to take part virtually, which would get you a shirt but allow you to run at a place and time of your choosing.

Please signup online now!! You can sign all family members up at once using the link here. There's a link on this form to pay online too using our secure donation portal. Sign up here: https://www.stjoeshelby.org/summer-signups/

Please sign up sooner rather than later so we know how much scholarship money we can promise to fami-lies who are in need.

Vacations—July 18-24

Father Mike, Billy Cross, Seminarian Tyler, and Re-becca will all be away on vacation July 18-24. The office will still be open.

A missionary priest is scheduled for July 18-19, but we do not know now if he can come. If not, Fr. Mike will delay his vacation until July 20.

Remember to rest, take it easy, enjoy family and friends, and support the economy! Vacations are wonderful things!

Remember to always find a Mass if you are away on vacation on a Sunday. The third commandment still applies when we are travelling.

SJS Pool Day—July 27

The St. Joe School Pool Day will take place at 7:30pm on Monday, July 27th. It will end at 9:30pm. All St. Joe School families are invited! Green Space.

Vocation Director Conference—July 27-30

Fr. Mike will be attending the Regional Vocation Director gathering on July 27-30. He will meet with all the other vocation directors in the dioceses in Indi-ana and surrounding states. Please excuse Father if he is not as quick in dealing with local things here during these dates.

He will still offer Mass and sacraments during those days and will be around some.

Seminarian Tyler Farewell—Aug. 2

It is hard to believe that Sem. Tyler Huber’s time with us is drawing to a close. He began in early May with us and must depart on Sunday, August 2nd. I know he will be back to visit!

Let’s have a farewell for Tyler on Sunday, August 2nd, after the Mass in Spanish. All are welcome. We’ll try and have it outside. Tyler will be a magnificent priest.

Clarity Golf Challenge —July 27

St. Joseph Church is taking part in the 22nd Annual Clarity Golf Challenge. This event supports Clarity Pregnancy Services here in Shelbyville. The event takes place on Monday, July 27th at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus. Seminarians Tyler Huber and JJ Huber (they are not brothers) will play 18 holes of golf with Ethan Apsley and Nolan Chaney. Clarity Crises Pregnancy Center in Shelbyville, is unable to take gently used items at this time due to Covid-19. They do have a desperate need for: Diapers-sizes N, 0, 2, 0-3 months; sleepers and onesie.

Dispense of Your Broken Sacramentals

You can bring items that have been blessed (sacramentals) but that are broken or no longer usa-ble to the Parish office. Fr. Mike will take these items and burn and bury them. Remember that you can never throw anything away that has been blessed.

Upcoming Events & Meetings

Many events/meetings are still taking place online using Zoom. That said, in-person parish meetings in parishes across the Archdiocese are resuming. All Parish Meeting Nights will begin in the month of August. Praise the Lord!

REP Registration—Ongoing

It is time to register your son or daughter for the Religious Education Program for the 2020-2021 school year. REP will start in September 2020.

If your child is unable to attend St. Joseph School, then he or she should definitely be enrolled in REP!

REP is for all children who do not attend St. Joseph School, preschool through eighth grade.

Freshmen in high school attend Confirmation prep at a different time.

The fee to cover textbooks and other expenses is $50 for each child, regardless of program (e.g., Con-firmation, Sunday Religious Ed, RCIC, etc.) up to a maximum of $150 per family.

Please remember that it is our DUTY as Christian parents, godparents, and grandparents, to make sure that our children are being brought up in the Catholic faith! It is a sad thing to see the faith “die out” in one’s family.

Sign up now at: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

For more information, go to: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

Please contact Fr. Mike or Billy should you have any questions.

Parish Library

A book can change your life! All are welcome to borrow a book from our library anytime. The library is located on the west doorway of the church. Please return the book when finished. Many thanks to Seminarian Tyler for organizing and cleaning up the library. It was a big project and it is so wonderful now!

COVID-19 Youth Trip Protocols

Dear Parents,

As you know, we are planning to continue with our youth trips this summer! Know that we’re following the guidelines set out by the CDC, the State of Indi-ana, and the Archdiocese. Safety and prudence will be our priority in all our undertakings this summer.

We will take temperatures as folks gather. No one with a fever can go. No one who has had COVID symptoms can go. No one who has been in touch with someone with or exposed to COVID can go.

Bus guidelines from the State Health Commissioner mandate assigned seats and masks on buses. We will cooperate with that.

Peace, Fr. Mike

When to Call the Priest

When a loved one is ill, please remember to call Father Mike before it is too late to give last rites. Many times people wait too long, thinking things will get better or waiting until as close to the very end as possible. No need to wait! Call Father as soon as things are going downhill. Remember that a person can receive the Sacrament of the Anointing many times in his or her life.

News for Both Parishes Billy Cross’ Bookshelf

Salvation: What every catholic should know.

My first experience of this book was not too long ago. My grandmother picked up this book from our home parish of St. Mark the Evangelist on the south side of Indianapolis. She found two books and gave one to me and one to my fiancé. This book had sat on my bookshelf for a few months and then Covid-19 struck. I was stuck in Shelbyville but was busy. After establishing somewhat of a new normal, Gaye McKenney, Father Mike, and myself have assembled our livestream dream team! I was looking for a good book to start reading during our daily adoration times and I picked up this book! I read it faster than any other book I have ever taken to prayer! It answered many questions I still had, gave light and revelation to thoughts ideas and reali-zations I hadn’t even thought of yet! It is a great book to help you understand in a simple and somewhat straight forward way how our Church views salvation and puts to rest a lot of false under-stands and teachings people may say of the Catholic Church!

To Grow Your Faith

Think about and read about the lives of the martyrs.

Think about and read about the lives of the missionaries.

Think about and read about the life of the saints -- especially your Confirmation saint.

Think about the life of Jesus and Mary.

Be inspired. Be bold. Be Catholic!

St. Joseph Prayer Line

If you would like your name or a loved one’s name placed on the prayer line but not published in the bulletin, please contact Loretta Eckstein at 317-392-1323.

St. Joseph Parking Lot

Please do not park in front of the trash and recycle dumpsters/bins during the week..Monday thru Friday. They are located behind St. Joseph Church on the left side near the cafeteria door.

Photos in the Bulletin!

We are making an effort to put more pictures into the bulletin! After all, a picture is worth a thousand words!

A few notes:

1) Photos look WAY better on the online version of the bulletin. They are in color there.

2) Please email photos to [email protected].

3) Next week, we will feature pictures from the Boat Trip, Brute Days, and VBS!

Prayer Before & After Mass

Remember that it is a beautiful practice to pray before Mass and after Mass. We can tend to come in at the last moment, or sometimes even late, and leave as soon as we can. Best to offer a pious, heartfelt prayer before Mass asking Jesus to touch and transform your life. Offer another such prayer at the end of Mass, thanking God for the Eucharist.

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Forgiveness is the important theme of this weekend’s Gospel. Jesus tells a well-known parable about weeds and wheat. The weeds and wheat grow up together. The servants ask if they should pull up the weeds. The landowner says no, wait a while. Read it again and think about the fact that you are the field with wheat and weeds sown and God is the landown-er. Sometimes we all do stuff we wish we hadn’t done. The crimes we commit don’t really agree with our inner selves. None of the weeds growing up in us are wonderful, but they are only part of us. We might have the urge to steal, to impress others falsely, to get what we want no matter what, to be lazy, (you can fill in the blank). These are not the full descrip-tion of who we are. When we endure someone who hurts us with their wrongs, maybe we can avoid rushing up to rip out weeds. Mixed with all the crab grass there are lovely flowers, and God loves all that we are. Forgiveness is letting go of an injury that angers us and giving God a chance to love. Take time this week to pray about this. Remember that God is patient, forgiving and loving.

Sr. Joan

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statute. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

August Newsletter

The deadline for the August Newsletter is Sunday, July 26th. Please share your joys and sorrows with your parish family. Contact Pat 765-265-7195 or email [email protected].

Today’s Readings—July 19

First Reading — God gives repentance for sins (Wisdom 23:13, 16-19). Psalm — “Lord, you are good and forgiving.” (Psalm 8:26-27) Second Reading — The Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27). Gospel — Let the seeds grow together until harvest (Matthew 13:24-43).

Keep Your Rosary in Your Pocket

Pray to our Blessed Virgin Mary! We celebrate her intercessory power, especially as it happens through the Rosary. Please make an effort to keep a rosary in your pocket all the time.

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia, providing compensation of $300 per freed slave to former slave owners. President Andrew Johnson overturned General Sherman’s famous promise of 40 acres and a mule, which would have redistributed roughly 400,000 acres to newly freed black families.

St. Vincent Purpose Statement

We joyfully share our gifts to nourish the community.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Reopening

Well folks, God is good! You would think that I would have learned by now to just trust in the Lord. I can tell you that I lost a little sleep about opening YOUR SVDP store too early. Everything went pretty darn well.

We broke a record for one day sales: over $1,100. (Even though ALL clothes were a buck).

We broke a record for the pieces of clothes sold….638 pieces.

Almost broke a record for attendance, even though some just left because children weren’t allowed or it was too hot to wait in line to get in because we were limiting the number of people within the store.

We were able to provide masks, and educate many on the use and rationale for wearing masks and utilizing social distancing and on hand sanitizing. (Many had no clue but only one com-plained).

We were able to accommodate a few clients: One had been burned out of their home, some just needed stuff. Yes, these were all freebees and are not reflected in total sales.

There were some technical hiccups that were not re-lated to Covid-19 like our new computer, charge card machine mishap, the AC was down, and a couple of small other things. All, clients and customers and volunteers, had a great day.

We are going to do the same “Dollar Sale” next week, July 18th from 10:00am to 2:00pm at 424 E. Jackson Street, Shelbyville. This will really help everyone. Please come and shop!

Next SVDP Meeting: Barring some unforeseen thing, we will have our next SVdP meeting on Monday, July 27th. More to come later on that. It has been 4 months!

Donations: Accepted at the warehouse by appoint-ment only. Please email or call.

Dear Lord, We thank you for allowing us to serve our less fortunate friends in Shelby County and grow in spirituality. Thanks a lot God. Please keep it up and correct our mistakes and guide and direct our lives. We ask this in Christ’s name. Amen.

Bulletin Advertisers Needed

Did you know that our St. Joseph and St. Vincent Bulletin is printed at no cost to our parishioners? We have recently switched printers and are printing it lo-cally. We are looking for your help to offset the print-ing cost by purchasing an ad. We are happy to an-nounce St. Joseph and St. Vincent Church’s offices are selling ads for the Bulletin. If we are able to secure enough advertisers, we will be able to provide the Bulletin and sometimes, print it in color for special occasions at no cost to parishioners. If you would like to place an ad in our weekly Bulletin, there are 3 different sizes and prices for a six month ad:

Small ad (business card size): $ 400.00 ($15.39 a wk) Quarter page ad: $ 750.00 ($28.85 a wk) 1/2 page ad: $1350.00 ($51.92 a wk)
