COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

NATIONAL LITERACY AND NUMERACY WEEK The key to lifelong learning is having good skills in literacy and numeracy. Once a person can read well and understands a range of numeracy concepts they are able to participate fully in society. They are also able to continue their learning, either through formal education or through their own private reading. National Literacy and Numeracy Week is designed to highlight the importance of these basic skills for all children of school age. Like most other schools throughout Australia, St Agnes’ Parish schools will be engaging in some special activities during the coming week. Some of these include:

Having guests reading a story to students in the library at lunchtime. Outdoor Maths trail. E-book poster competition. Spelling bee. “Finding Nemo” fish identification competition in Marine Studies classes. Refugee poster competition in HSIE classes. Orienteering in PD/H/PE. 12 word stories in French and English. Images of Jesus poetry competition in Religious Education. Book swap for a gold coin donation for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. ‘Who is reading what’ sharing among staff. Jelly Bean guessing competition.

These are just some of the literacy and numeracy activities planned for the coming week. I would encourage students to participate in activities and use the week as an opportunity to have some fun while developing these important basic skills.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE STAFF DEVELOPMENT - PUPIL FREE DAY Staff at St Joseph’s Regional College have been working for the past 12 months to plan for the introduction of the new curriculum. As we get closer to the introduction, the College will be devoting two Staff Development Days to this work, ensuring we are in a good position to support contemporary learning and the Australian Curriculum in our college. Day 1: Friday 2nd August: Term 3 week 2 Day 2: Tuesday 8th October: Term 4 week 1 What is the Australian Curriculum? The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), in collaboration with states and territories, has developed agreed Australian Curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science and History. Each of these learning areas includes content statements that represent essential learning for all Australian students. How is Australian Curriculum being implemented in NSW? In NSW, the Board of Studies has worked closely with teachers and key education stakeholders to develop syllabuses that include the Australian Curriculum content and further detail that clarifies learning. As a result of this work, Kindergarten to Year 10 syllabuses provide direction to ensure greater consistency between NSW schools. When will the new syllabuses for Years 7-10, incorporating Australian Curriculum, be taught in NSW?

2014 Years 7 and 9: English, Mathematics, Science and History – start teaching

2015 Years 8 and 10: English, Mathematics, Science and History – start teaching

What will my child learn at school? The new syllabuses build on the strength of the existing NSW Curriculum. Many features of the new K–10 English, Mathematics, Science and History syllabuses are retained. The syllabuses identify essential knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that students are expected to develop in each learning area. They are designed to provide flexibility for teachers to develop their teaching and learning programs to meet the needs of their students. In addition to subject-based content, all syllabuses address important contemporary themes and general capabilities as students prepare to live and work successfully in the 21st century. These include Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities and other learning across the curriculum areas identified by the Board of Studies. YEAR 12 HSC TRIALS We wish our Year 12 students all the very best as they commence their Trial HSC examinations next week. I ask the College community to keep Year 12 in their prayers; this is their last term of formal lessons. They return in term 4 but only to sit their HSC examinations.

WALKATHON 2013

This week’s assembly saw Wally the Walkathon Bear and his friends launch the 2013 Walkathon to be held on Friday 30th August.

This major fundraising event allows students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and have this week been given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Cath Eichmann at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

I invite our College community to participate in the Walkathon by assisting with the many jobs that are required to make this day a success. Interested families are asked to complete the following form and return to the office. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

God Bless

SCHOOL FEES Many thanks to all of those families who have paid their school fees and to those who are committed to the ongoing payment of fees. To operate our schools efficiently and with the best possible facilities, school fees are the most critical component of the means of resourcing our schools. Currently there is a substantial shortfall in the budgeted school fee collection rate which means there is financial pressure on the operating budgets of individual schools. Any payment of outstanding fees would therefore be most appreciated. Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) include: If I am having difficulty keeping up with paying fees, what can I do? We are really keen to assist anyone who is experiencing difficulty with paying fees. All family circumstances are different and we would like to hear from people so that we can provide financial assistance during difficult times. All school fee issues are kept completely confidential. Please phone Trudi Hosking at Parish Administration – 6588 7444 Can I adjust my Direct Debit amount? Definitely. We’re only too happy to discuss this with parents and negotiate an appropriate plan for individual families. What is the Fee Assistance Program? The Fee Assistance Program is designed specifically for people experiencing financial hardship or other special circumstances, short term or long term. Please phone Trudi Hosking for further information. The established partnership of schools working with parents to provide the best possible education for their children is commendable. Thank you again for your ongoing support. John McQueen Parish Director Education

Sunday 6pm Mass Comes Alive Thank you to Leanne Johnson, Sharon Green and the 25-30 musicians and singers who provided a wonderful musical addition to the St Agnes’ Parish 6.00pm Mass on the first weekend of the holidays. I would also like to thank the parents, family, friends and fellow staff members and students who also joined in this liturgical celebration. There were so many wonderful comments from the parishioners. We will also be involved on Sunday, September 1st at 6pm Mass. Since it is during the school term, we hope to have even more involvement from our school community. Mark this date on your calendar! We would love to have you join us!

This term there will be year masses for Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10. We enjoy having parents join us on these occasions. We understand the difficulty of work commitments and the balancing act of parent responsibilities, but if you able to join us a morning tea for parents will be held after each of these masses.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation and divorce

Parent Invitation

Parent Assembly is delighted be offering a new program for parents this term. In partnership with Good Grief and the Diocese Of Lismore. We are proud to be part of a pilot of the brand new program, Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce.

For a long time our Diocesan Schools have offered the highly successful Seasons for Growth® program for children and young people. For many years, parents whose children have participated in the Seasons for Growth® Young People’s Program have been asking, ‘Is there a program that can help parents, too’?

Seasons for Growth for Parents has been developed to meet this need. The program provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the experience of separation and divorce from your child’s perspective, and to explore ideas and strategies that might help you support your child/ren through the changes happening in your family.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce is a small group program for 5-10 parents. It will be held over 2 x 2 hour sessions and is for parents only.

The date and time are dependent on the availability of the group

Cost: free of charge

For more information or to express your interest in being a part of the Seasons for Growth for Parents trial this term, please contact Peta Rourke – 0400 420 614 or [email protected]

Tips for HSC Success To be the best, you have to be the best prepared, and the only way to achieve this is to work hard. Top students study for two to five hours on a week night and three to six hours a day at weekends. Put distractions (magazines, games, TV) away. Turn off the mobile phone. Make a list of deadlines. Try using earplugs, and listen to music when doing undemanding work. Consider studying in a library where there are fewer distractions. Find study buddies for sharing notes and discussing ideas. Consider a tutor, because they force you to work and can change your attitude to a subject. Get help from your teacher. Get family members to test you before exams. Plan your week ahead. Remember to take breaks. Get a copy of the course syllabus as it is a guide as to what should be in your study notes. Write brief notes and review them immediately. Review them again after 24 hours and then twice a

week thereafter. Use colour to highlight important headings. Subheadings act as memory triggers. Do lots of practice papers. Research shows top students do a lot more practice tests. Read extra material, making notes of relevant information and then refer to it in your exam essay. Look for unique angle. Demonstrate that you understand opposing opinions and then explain why

you believe one argument is more correct. Avoid stressed people and those who speculate about what is in an exam on the day. Aim to stay

calm. It takes students about 10 minutes to focus in the exam room. Start mentally rehearsing what you

are going to do before the examiner says you may start. Check how many marks have been allocated to each part

of an exam question. Read and re-read the questions. Spend five minutes planning your essay. Learn from your mistakes. 20 minute power naps can help. Keep things in perspective.

UNIVERSITY OF NSW MEDICINE WORKSHOP The University of NSW Medicine workshop held recently at the Kensington campus in Sydney was an amazing experience. Those of us who attended gained first-hand knowledge of what the demands of studying medicine would be. We were able to learn about the application procedure, including the UMAT, interview process and the academic requirements for entry to Medicine and what is required personally and academically in order to study it as a profession. It was great to be able to meet 30 other rural students from around NSW and live on campus for 3 days. I would definitely recommend anyone considering studying Medicine at university in the future applying to attend this workshop. Erin Badewitz, Year 12 Student FUTURE OPTIONS EXPO Yesterday, all Year 12 will be attending the Future Options Expo at Camden Haven High School. Here, they were able to access information from a diverse range of Universities, Private colleges, TAFE and some government statutory bodies. MANAGING SAFE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AT HOME

It is recommended that parents exercise a degree of control over their children’s use of technology at home. Just as you set limits and expect certain standards of behaviour from your children in other aspects of their social development, the same should apply to their use of computers and other personal devices.

Over the next few weeks we will offer tips and links to resources we think may be useful to ensure safe use of technology at home.

TIP: • Set digital free times in your family calendar e.g device free Sundays

For more tips and video links on managing safe use of technology at home, visit our iPad website from the Quick Links tab on the school website or copy and paste the following URL in your browser http://go2school.wix.com/ipad#!management/cfqh

13s RUGBY LEAGUE COUNTRY CUP NORTHERN STATE FINALS

Sometimes you learn more about a team when they are losing than when they are winning. The day before the 13s rugby league team went to Coffs Harbour to compete in the Northern State semi-final, injuries meant four key players were unavailable. To their credit the other players rallied and played in a manner that the College was proud of.

The game against the eventual winners, Farrer was tough. However we were very competitive in our games against St. Joseph's Aberdeen and Tweed River High School and could have won both games. As it was we didn't, but the boys learnt some valuable lessons about themselves and how to play better football. It was a great experience to be part of.

The team is very appreciative of the support Alex Gillman and the parents who travelled to Coffs gave them.

Congratulations boys.
