COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT GRATITUDE Most of you have become aware that I have been on leave since the last week of Term 3 following open heart surgery to replace the aortic valve. I am pleased to report that all went exceptionally well and I am now back at work. When faced with a major health challenge like this, you become even more conscious of certain realities including, one’s vulnerability and need to rely on so many others, the great skill and expertise of surgeons and medical staff in this great country and the care and support of family, friends, colleagues and our whole extended education community. I am extremely grateful to all for your concern, support and prayers. I would especially like to thank John McQueen who took over some of my key responsibilities such as chairing employment interview panels, the SAPSS Leadership Team and the Advisory Board. I am also grateful to others who assisted in my absence and to all those who sent emails, SMS messages and cards. It was humbling and gratifying to receive so much support during this challenging time. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Year 11 Reflection Day The Year 11 Reflection Day began with a prayer of thanksgiving and was followed with a variety of activities to highlight the importance of stopping to reflect on who we are, our relationships with others, our dreams for the future and God’s presence on our journey. Some of the activities provided students with an opportunity for individual reflection on personal goals, while other activities focused on sharing in pairs or small groups. The students are to be commended on how well they entered into the spirit of the day. I am sure they came away with words of wisdom, insight and encouragement that will assist them on their journey ahead. The day concluded with a closing liturgy with prayers prepared by the students. Thank you to Mr Bruce Smith who coordinated the day’s program with the help of Mr Sean Jennings, Mrs Helen Gilbert and Ms Nora Swain. Thank you to the Pastoral Care teachers, Mrs Bronwyn Shipton, Mr Phil Shelley, Mr Chris Delaney, Mr John Rossington, Mrs Leanne Tinsey, Mr Dave Lewis, and Ellen Hales, our parish youth worker. A delicious BBQ lunch was supplied by Mrs Carol Avery, Mr Craig Buesnell and his student helpers. Thank you as well to Mrs Kerrie Badewitz for the preparation of the material used on the day. Thank you to all Year 11 students it was a pleasure sharing the day with you!

Page 3: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter T4, Wk5 8th Nov 2013

The day culminated with a liturgy and students’ group prayers of intercession.

Prayers of intercession

Dear Lord we pray: That we may have guidance and support through the challenges we face during the year ahead. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: That our friendships continue to grow and we are able to create new relationships through this difficult year. We pray that we remain faithful in our friendships and we do not forget those we love during the year ahead and be forgiving in our disappointments. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: That we can take the time to be grateful for the beautiful environment that we are blessed with in Port Macquarie. We pray that we can continue to care for it and appreciate its splendour. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: That in the next 12 months we have belief in ourselves and what we can do to our full potential. Thank you for our individuality and our power of choice. May we trust in your plans for us. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: That Jesus lover of my soul, stays with us through our HSC journey, to guide and help us do the best we can and to strengthen our faith and belief in ourselves. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: For those without a safe place to sleep at night, for those who must sacrifice each day to survive and for those disconnected from friends, family and their wider community. May we all appreciate what we have ; our friendships, our family, our homes and those others who support us. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: That all members of our community feel united in spirit and happiness and that new members feel welcomed and at home. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: For those who have been affected by the bushfires in New South Wales. We pray for the people that have lost their homes we pray for the fire fighters who risk their lives. We pray that god is with them as they rebuild their lives. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: and give thanks for the family and friends that will support us throughout our journey over the next 12 month. Lord hear us.

Dear Lord we pray: In thanks for our teacher’s commitment, guidance and knowledge. Let us cherish them and build positive relationships with them. Bless them and give them strength. Lord hear us.

One cannot help but feel very optimistic about the calibre of students who will take on their shared leadership responsibility at St Joseph’s Regional College next year.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey Principal

GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM

Last Friday, I was honoured to meet our local NSW Member of Parliament, Mrs Leslie Williams MP, as part of the Gifted and Talented Program being run by the school this term. I am doing the Geography program and we have been given a scenario where the local council is looking to put a dam in the Hastings River. In this scenario we each have different roles to play. I take the role of our Local MP and Mrs Williams kindly offered to come to our school to discuss what I would have to do in real life. Mrs Williams answered all my questions thoroughly and explained similar situations she has been involved with in the past. I am now aware of exactly what I would need to do as a state Member of Parliament. It was a pleasure to meet with Mrs Williams and I am grateful for the time she took out of her schedule to meet with me. Thomas Gammon (Year 8)

The three Year 7/8 programs (Geography, English and Science/Maths) have all been working hard on various projects. The Geography project that Thomas has written about is very interesting, with the students understanding what it is like to be involved in community projects. The English group are learning how to compose, analyse and respond texts in the Sci Fi and Horror genres. The Science/Maths group has finished looking at the creation of the Universe and are now looking at elements. Thanks again to Leslie Williams for taking the time to come and visit and speak to Thomas, Debbie and myself and also to the teachers, for allowing out-of-class time for students involved, and lastly to the students for their enthusiastic participation.

Principal Appraisal

Dear Parents

During Term 4 on Friday, 22nd November, Jim Dempsey, St Joseph’s Regional College Principal will be involved in a formative principal appraisal process as part of his contract conditions. This formative appraisal process, conducted at the end of the first year in the role, seeks information from a variety of people associated with the parish school and uses a number of tools to ensure effective consultation. The process aims to highlight the positive aspects of the leadership offered and identify areas for further development.

A timeline is currently being arranged to suit the needs of the parish school community. The panel consists of a Catholic Schools Office (CSO) education consultant and a diocesan principal nominated by the CSO. The CSO education consultant facilitates the process. The formative principal appraisal process involves:

review of the principal’s goals for the year an interview with the principal an interview with the parish priest an interview with the school executive an interview with local associate principals surveys of randomly selected parents and a survey of the parish school staff interviews with parents of the official parent body

In writing the appraisal report, the education consultant makes use of the information gathered but does not identify sources. The principal does not sight the survey returns and they are destroyed at the CSO once the report is finalised.

The Director of Catholic Schools provides an appraisal report to the principal.

Tonia Flanagan, Education Consultant

YEAR 11 - Young People and Risk Taking

Supporting Provisional Drivers (P1 & P2)

A P1 licence must be held for at least 12 months.

After passing a hazard perception test, drivers progress to the P2 licence for a minimum of 24 months.

Speed restrictions for P1 drivers is 90km/h and for P2 drivers 100km/h

A zero blood alcohol limit applies to all L, P1 and P2 licence holders. This means NO ALCOHOL before driving.

For P1 drivers mobile phone use is prohibited, even hands-free or loudspeaker. P2 drivers can only talk on a hands-free phone when driving; no text messaging.

P1 drivers under the age of 25 can only carry one passenger under 21 between the hours of 11pm and 5am (some exemptions apply).

Tips for Parents Remember your teenager is still very new to driving. Continue to encourage safe driving including:

Ensuring they organise their time so they can stick to posted speed limits and adapt to driving conditions, such as rain.

Get them to plan their night before they leave.

Slowly increasing the amount of independent night driving – this is a time when young drivers are more likely to crash.

• Gradually allowing them to increase the number of passengers in the car once they have progressed to the P2 stage.

Before your teenager goes out, particularly when partying, spend some time discussing options for getting home safely. Some ideas for young people to consider:

• Leave the car at home.

• Catch a bus – check timetables to avoid waiting times at bus stops.

• Stay overnight with a friend.

• Arrange to be dropped off and picked up by a parent or other responsible adult.

Also discuss:

• Driving alcohol free.

• Dealing with pressure from friends to drive in an unsafe manner.

• Being a responsible passenger.
