P&F Meets 2nd Tuesday each month
Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Caregivers
Last Friday evening, our Senior Band competed in the Queensland Catholic Musical Festival at Villanova. Our students
were outstanding and received a Gold award as recognition. Thank you so very much to Mrs Linda Pendrith, Mrs Rosie
Zorzetto and Mrs Amy Luscombe who supported our students. Many thanks also to the wonderful parent support on the
evening. Our students are musical STARs and as a community we are very proud of their achievements.
On Monday and Tuesday, Mrs Luscombe and I had the pleasure of visiting our students who competed at the Zone
Carnival. Thank you to Mrs Christie Lewis, Mrs Bern Duggan, Miss Emma Russell and Mrs Louise Busby who supported
our students. Again, our students were STARs and displayed incredible skill and sportsmanship. They again did our community proud. Please see the
Sport Report from Mrs Lewis further in the newsletter.
Last night, our teaching staff worked as collaboratively as a professional learning community engaged in professional development in the area of
Behaviour Management. Peter Miles was our presenter and his informative and practical presentation was very enlightening. We will continue to walk
with Peter Miles on our journey in the area of continuing to develop positive behaviours for learning in our classrooms.
Today and tomorrow, I am away the North 4 Principal Cluster at Nanango. On Monday I will be away at the Leadership Forum.
Today St Joseph’s held a Seniors Showcase in partnership with Jubilee Community Care and it was an engaging learning
experience for our student community. Our students were again STARs in the way they welcomed, cared for and
interacted with our senior visitors.
This Saturday, we have three teams competing in the Tournament of the Minds Competition. Many thanks to Mrs Anne
Gole, Mr Mark Deegan and Miss Eireen Lorenzo for their leadership of these teams. We wish them all the very best for
this competition. These students will be practicing their performance for our school community this Friday at 11.45am.
I am very pleased to inform our community that our Prep enrolments for 2016 are well and truly on target. It is so encouraging to know that our school is
highly sought as we are committed to equity and excellence in education.
The Parents and Friends Federation would like parents to complete an online survey to gather the latest data about the activity of and commitment to
P&F throughout Catholic schools in Queensland to assist in future planning. I encourage parents to complete this survey on the following link https://
www.surveymonkey.com/r/KWPR25K
Some staff updates: Tomorrow Mrs Meghan Bach and Mrs Jane Robinson will take some well deserved long service leave. We welcome Majella
Deegan to cover this leave. Later in fourth term, Mrs Michelle Johnson will be going on maternity leave. For 2016, Mrs Meghan Bach will be on
maternity leave as she welcomes her second child.
Saturday week will be our much anticipated TRIVIA NIGHT. It is going to be an entertaining and fun filled evening. Please support this evening....and
get your 80s costume ready! Numerous thanks again to our supportive and well organised Parents and Friends team who are co-ordinating this event.
Next week, I will be holding another Master Plan 2016 - 2020 conversation on Tuesday 25 August at 3pm in the Star Room, all welcome.
Finally, an update on the monies raised during Catholic Education Week for Franciscan Friday. A donation of $522 was
presented to the School of the Air by Ellen (Year 6 Leader) at a special event at the EKKA. Well done St Joseph’s!
Yours in education

From the APRE Staff Professional Learning
As part of our ongoing goal to develop a common understanding and language of learning, and building upon the foundations of our
STAR Expectations, yesterday afternoon our teaching team participated in professional learning session with Peter Miles (an external
Behaviour Support expert). The learning intentions for teachers were:
To enhance self-awareness of personal behaviour management skills
To promote consistency of behaviour management practice across the school
To foster teacher resilience
Peter provided some feedback from observations he had made earlier this term. He affirmed that St Joseph’s has exceptionally well-behaved
students and that our teaching team have a vast array of proactive strategies for dealing with disruptive behaviour. Peter identified, explained
and provided practical examples of many low-intrusive, proactive behaviour management strategies – raising teacher consciousness of what
they already do, but possibly don’t name. In the coming weeks, our School Officer team will receive professional learning in this area
also. Research says, that consistent, whole-school approaches are needed for effective behaviour support, hence our commitment to investing
in building our staff capacity in this area.
National Senior’s Week – St Joseph’s Showcase
St Joseph’s, in partnership with Jubilee Community Care, hosted a Seniors Showcase in our school hall today. 13
senior citizens from our Parish area set up displays and shared their wisdom, special interests and life stories with our
Year 4, 5 & 6 students. The showcase aligns with the Religious Life of our School as our students gave witness to the
wider community through hospitality and welcome. A highlight of the day was our Year 5 Choir singing And the
band sang ‘Waltzing Matilda’. The Senior Citizens were most impressed with the energy, enthusiasm and respect of
our students and left our school this afternoon feeling valued and appreciated.
Upcoming Class Mass Times
As part of the Religious Life of our School our students and teachers lead Parish Mass on Tuesday mornings at
9am. Parents and Parishioners are most welcome to join the leadership team and class parent representatives after
Mass for a Cuppa and Conversation.
Upcoming Community Prayer
As a Christ centred and welcoming learning community, we invite all who are part of St Joseph’s to join in prayer on the first Friday of the
month (during school term). Our next Community Prayer will be held on 4 September at 8am in the Church and will have a focus on Fathers. I
encourage everyone, especially the special men in our children’s lives, to join us in prayer on this morning, as we honour and celebrate God’s
gift of fathers..
Parish Confirmation and First Eucharist
We continue to hold the children preparing for Confirmation and First Eucharist in our Parish in our prayers. On Wednesday 9th September,
these children will participate in a retreat with candidates from our sister Jubilee schools … more information coming home soon.

LIBRARY NEWS Calling all young writers! Entries are now open for the Young Writers Award, a unique opportunity for children aged between 9 and 13 to become published authors. The award provides a platform for young writers to showcase their story telling abilities in the form of either a short story, or a picture book. The winners in each category will enjoy the thrill of seeing their story illustrated and printed as both a hard copy and e-book. More information can be found here. http://www.youngwritersaward.com.au/
Mrs Gardiner will be co-ordinating this writing opportunity for any St Joseph’s student turning 9 this year up to the age 13. Please encourage your child to visit her in the Library for more information about this exciting opportunity and the possibility of seeing their work published. Book Club Change In our last newsletter I advised that I would not be handing out Issue 6 Book Club due to our Carnival Book Fair in Week 9. Upon receiving this issue, I feel there are many great choices for purchase and I know many families rely on this club to source quality titles for their children. With that in mind, I have decided to hand it out. Please look for this in your child’s bag this week. Issue 6 will run for a short time only and orders must be back at school by Thursday the 21st of August (Week 7) Teacher Colouring Competition As you walk past the Library windows this week, you will see some Book Week colouring on display. These are the efforts of our teachers. Please take the time to view them, then pop into the Library and vote for your favourite. These are numbered as the names of the owners will only be revealed when the winner is announced during Book Week! Thank you Amanda Gardiner Teacher Librarian
Music News
Why teach music in schools?
“Music educators have long recognised the substantive contribution that music education can make to the
development of unique aesthetic and intellectual abilities as well as the acquisition of relevant life skills such as
time management, decision-making, goal setting, personal planning, critical thinking, self-directed learning,
interpersonal skills and self-confidence.” Extract from Music in Action.
