“LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES”

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday and we are blessed for all those involved in this important ministry and serve as catechists. Let us remem-ber that by virtue of our Baptism each of us has a mission of handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Let us rededicate ourselves as a community of faith.

“The word of God nourishes both evangelizers and those who are being evan-gelized so that each one may continue to grow in his or her Christian life” (NDC Washington, DC USCCB, 2005 no.17)

St. Jude the Apostle is pleased to welcome Timothy Griffith and

Mable Griffith to our parish family.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Cross of Forgiveness

Why should we forgive those who hurt us? The gospel this Sunday gives three reasons: First, because Jesus commands it. Second, because forgiveness is part of loving one another. And third, be-cause we want to be forgiven for our sins.

Here Jesus commands us to forgive unceasingly, with-out limit. Now that could be a challenge for even the most patient person. Does it mean we have to let some-one hurt us over and over? No, it is possible to forgive someone and also prevent them from hurting us, if we do it with love (the second reason.) For instance, we might forgive an alcoholic family member, but still insist that they get help. Since forgiveness is part of love, it is also part of tough love.

That leads to the third reason: We forgive because we have been forgiven. Jesus has already died for our sins. If we truly believe that Jesus is risen and that we will rise to eternal life with him in spite of our sins, how can we refuse to forgive someone who hurts us? Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

FORGIVEN AND FORGIVING In today's Gospel, Jesus calls his followers to forgive "seventy-seven" times. In other words, stop keeping track when forgiv-ing others. But when we are hurt, this is really hard to do. In fact, to protect ourselves from further hurt, we might be in-clined to do the opposite, and lash out. Jesus teaches the futili-ty of this approach. Jesus' parable of the unforgiving servant reminds us that in the course of our lives we have harmed others, and so distanced ourselves from God. We have also been harmed by others. Like the servant, we sometimes owe a debt, and sometimes others owe a debt to us. Here we are invited to stop the cycle of pain with the grace of mercy. We are called to imitate our God, who forgives wholeheartedly. PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE It is also tempting to view this teaching on forgiveness in iso-lation. This would suggest that the burden is placed entirely upon the offended person to go on forgiving, without mention-ing any accountability on the part of the offending person. This interpretation can often be dangerous. The call to forgive should never be used as a cover for bullying or for oppressive relationships of any kind. It is helpful to consider all of chapter 18 in Matthew's Gospel, which teaches about forgiveness and reconciliation, and the exercise of authority in the Christian community. Last week's Gospel (Matthew 18:15-18) provides guidance on how Chris-tians can call to accountability someone who has hurt others, to protect the weak, and to seek reconciliation as a community. The parable we hear today reminds us that, like the master who protected the second servant from the cruelty of the un-forgiving servant, God seeks to guard the most vulnerable from harm. The Gospel of Matthew presented an alternative to the vio-lence-based order of his day. Matthew described Jesus' vision of community, in which power is used at the service of all and the vulnerable are protected and cherished. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School

LITERACY COLLABORATIVE

Christ Our Savior has been invited to participate in a lit-eracy collaborative with eight other Catholic Schools located on the south side of Chicago. The focus of the collaborative is to improve literacy instruction in Pre-K through Grade 8 classrooms and to positively impact stu-dent learning. We will be working with principals and teachers from the other schools to learn about the best practices in literacy instruction. The framework for this work rests on the philosophy of a balanced literacy ap-proach and will focus on the instructional shifts needed to meet the rigorous standards and prepare our students for high school. Prior to the start of the 2017-2018 school year, teachers met with experts in the area of liter-acy engagement to develop common expectations for reading and writing instruction. We will be increasing the amount of time for literacy instruction and will pro-vide time for students to engage in independent reading and writing during the school day. Our participation in this project provides us with a chance to collaborate with peers and to increase our capacity for high level quality instruction. This is a three-year project and we are very excited to have this opportunity.

CAMPBELL SOUP PROGRAM RETIRED

For years many parishioners, families and friends have saved Campbell Soup labels and related product labels for our local Catholic Schools. Each year we would send in our labels to receive valuable school merchandise and equipment through this program. The Labels for Educa-tion Program will cease to exist after December 31, 2017. Campbell has started to eliminate the Label for Education logo on their products. If you have any labels to donate to COS, the labels must still contain the word-ing “Labels for Education.” Please turn in all labels by the beginning of December, 2017 so we will be able to benefit from this program. THANK YOU so much for all of years that you have donated labels to COS and our founding parish schools well. Again, we would love to express our gratitude to the Krolo family of St. Jude the Apostle Parish who counted our labels each year. Just a note….The Box Top Program will continue on!

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Next weekend we celebrate the seminarians of the Archdiocese of Chicago through our second collection. By offering our financial support we provide these young men with the critical edu-cation and training they need to shepherd our parishes and administer the sacraments. Last year, more than $978,000 was collected and I am thankful for your past and present support.

Pope Francis reminds us that, “The Church and the world need mature and balanced priests, intrep-

id and generous Pastors, capable of closeness, of listening and mercy.” There are currently 54 seminari-ans preparing for a life of service as your future parish priests. Our seminarians’ motivation and enthusi-asm in their pursuit to answer God’s call is inspiring. The are the future guides for the spiritual and intellec-tual formation of our Catholic communities and are well deserving of our prayers and financial support.

Contributions made to this collection alleviate monthly expenses such as tuition and fees ($1,672),

room and board ($638), and health insurance ($171) for each seminarian and will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. You may utilize the remittance envelopes provid-ed to your parish or should you find it more convenient, feel free to contribute online through our website at www.archchicago.org/seminarianfund.

For your generous support in the past and for your consideration of support again this year, I thank you. May God continue to bless you abundantly. Please know that I keep you in my daily prayers and in-tentions, and I ask for yours in return.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago
