As We Forgive The most powerful petition and sign of the Kingdom of God is the forgiveness of sin.  We pray, “forgive us our trespasses (sins) as we forgive those who trespass (sin) against us.”  Wherever we encounter forgiveness of sin we are in the Kingdom of God. 

As we have prayed throughout the “Our Father” we have asked that the “Kingdom come.”  This kingdom is manifested in the will of God being done “on earth as it is in heaven.”  It is manifested in creation that supplies us with all that is necessary to sustain our physical life and our spiritual life.  It is most profoundly found in the for‐giveness of sins. 

For us of Christian faith, Jesus Christ is the forgiveness of sin.  His sacrifice on the cross, the shedding of his blood, and his surrender of his spirit are all about forgive‐ness of sin.  When we turn to Jesus Christ, acknowledging him to be Savior and Son of God, confessing our sins and recognizing our human weakness, we acknowledge Jesus Christ to be King of the Universe.  His action of forgiveness is the complete emptying of self for our benefit.  It is a totally gratuitous action and a generosity of self that is meant to leave us in awe.   

It is also a call to each and every one of us to go and do the same, to be generous with the whole of who we are.  The greatest challenge is forgiveness.  We might be able to be generous with our things, but the one thing we most often hold onto is our anger.  Anger has power behind it and it can be used as a weapon of revenge.  The more and longer we hold onto anger over a wrong done to us, the more power we feel.  We are all waiting for the sinner to bow down at our feet begging for for‐giveness.  We all want those who have offended us to grovel and humiliate them‐selves so that we can let them know how great we are by half forgiving and taking every opportunity to remind the offender how they hurt us, especially if we have an audience to witness our greatness in forgiving. 

Yet, this is not what the Lord Jesus did in forgiving us of our sins.  He forgives and moves on.  Life is too precious, so the Lord Jesus has no use in staying in the past.  He is about the Kingdom of God and bringing it into complete existence.  He is not the kind of king we are used to.  His only desire is for us to be overwhelmed by his generous love.  

The basis of all generosity is first of all realizing how blessed we are, especially in the love of the Lord Jesus who has forgiven us of our sins.  Our response to the blessings of life is to be grateful to the point of all prayer is about expressing our gratitude for all that life brings us.  The natural result of gratitude is generosity. If we are so blessed by the Lord with all of the gifts of the Kingdom of God, then no matter what happens in our daily life, there is more than we need.  This is what it means to do the will of God. The daily giving of all that I have for the good of oth‐ers, especially forgiveness, acknowledges that our trust is in God, who has invited us to participate in His Kingdom by our acts of generosity.             ‐‐ Fr. Joe Robillard

BALANCE Today's scriptures emphasize the fundamental

link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God.

That connection and balance, however, isn't always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in reli-gious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. our Book of Eternal Life. The book is near the baptis-mal font through November.

lope packets, and are available in the church. Com-pleted envelopes may be placed in the collection bas-kets or turned in to the Parish Office. The envelopes will be kept near the altar until the beginning of Advent.

Treasures from our Tradition This week we have in All Souls' Day a com-

memoration that is linked to the Halloween cus-toms. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday's grateful remem-brance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the grave-yard, whereas others might actually go to the ceme-tery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The "Day of the Dead" is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days.

For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life's sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchro-nize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. St. Vincent de Paul… Help us help others during this Season of Giving

Every week throughout the year volunteers from our parish St. Vincent DePaul Society come together to prepare and distribute bags of groceries to those who are in need. Also, we have re-cently started an additional U.S.D.A. food distribution program that is offered once a month. --Our Wednesday program from 6-7 p.m. is for those who live within our parish boundaries. ID is required. --Our U.S.D.A. program is held once a month, usually on the 4th Saturday from 8-10 a.m. No boundaries or ID is required for this distribution.

Our next U.S.D.A. distribution will be Saturday, November 18 from 8-10 a.m. under the shelter. You must bring your own bags or boxes.

We are asking for YOUR HELP to restock our pantry for the weekly

distribution, as well as the holiday food baskets that we will be giving out. Please support our annual Loaves and Fishes FOOD DRIVE

On Sat.-Sun., Nov. 4-5, we ask you to take an empty grocery bag that has a Loaves and Fishes flyer attached to it, which lists our greatest needs for the food drive. Bags will be on tables outside the church doors after all Masses. We ask that you return the bags with groceries the following weekend, Nov. 11-12.

We will be sorting the food bags under the shelter on Sunday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. and can use additional help during this time. Adults and kids are welcome. Those under age 16 must be with a parent.

Thanksgiving Day food drive: Please join in our annual tradition of bringing non-perishable food and donations for our SVDP program to our Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 23.

Toy Drive: Please support our annual Toy Drive for children age 0-14. We are asking for new, unwrapped toys, games, gift cards, books, movies, puzzles, etc. These can be dropped off at the SVDP room on Sunday mornings or in the Parish Office. Non-perishable food donations are accepted throughout the year in our Parish Office. We appreciate and graciously accept monetary donations for our SVDP program throughout the year. Please use the blue donation envelopes.

Volunteers are needed so that we can continue to serve those in need. Please join us on: --Nov. 11/12 weekend for sorting and placing food in our SVDP room. --Nov. 18, Saturday, for Thanksgiving food distribution help from 8-10 a.m. and from 12-2 p.m. --Nov. 23 (Thanksgiving Day) for carrying food boxes from the church (after Mass) to the SVDP room, from approximately 10:15-10:45 a.m. --Dec. 23, for Christmas food and toy distribution help, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. --Wednesdays throughout the year from 5-7 p.m.

Como Nosotros Perdonamos La petición y señal más poderosa del Reino de Dios es el perdonar los pecados. Oramos, “Perdona nuestras ofensas (pecados) como nosotros 

perdonamos a los que nos ofenden (pecan contra nosotros)”. Cuando tenemos un encuentro con el perdón de los pecados estamos en el Reino de Dios.  

En nuestra oración del “Padre Nuestro” hemos pedido que “Venga a nosotros tu Reino”. Este reino se manifiesta cuando se hace la voluntad de Dios “en la tierra como en el cielo”. Se manifiesta en la creación que nos provee con las cosas necesarias para sostener nuestra vida física y nuestra vida espiritual. Se encuentra más profundamente cuando se perdona los pecados.  

Para nosotros de la fe cristiana, Jesucristo es el perdón de los pecados. Su sacrificio en la cruz, el derramamiento de su sangre, la entrega de su espíritu; todo esto se trata del perdón de los pecados. Cuando nos volvemos a Jesucristo, lo reconocemos como el Salvador y el Hijo de Dios. Al confesar nuestros pecados y reconociendo nuestra debilidad humana, reconocemos a Jesucristo como el Rey del Universo. Su acción de perdonar es el vaciarse completamente de sí mismo por nuestro beneficio. Es una acción de total gratitud y generosidad de si mismo que es para dejarnos asombrados.  

También es un llamado a cada uno de nosotros de ir y hacer lo mismo, ser generosos con el todo de lo que somos. El reto más grande es el de perdonar. Podremos ser generosos con otras cosas, pero la cosa que usualmente nos aferramos es la ira. La ira tiene el poder dentro de ella y puede ser usada como una arma de venganza. Lo más que nos aferramos y el tiempo que duramos con la ira sobre un mal que se nos ha hecho, sentimos más poder. Todos esperamos que el pecador se postre a nuestros pies rogándonos que lo perdonemos. Todos queremos que el que nos ofendió se arrastre y se humille para poder presumir nuestra grandiosidad por haberlo más o menos perdonado y tomamos cada oportunidad de recordarle las heridas que nos hicieron, especialmente si tenemos un público que testifique de nuestra grandiosidad por haber disque perdonado.  

Sin embargo, esto no fue lo que el Señor Jesús hiso cuando perdono nuestros pecados. Él perdona y sigue adelante. La vida es muy valiosa, por lo que el Señor Jesús no encuentra el caso de permanecer en el pasado. Él está para el Reino de Dios y de llevarlo a su cumplimiento. Él no es el tipo de rey que estamos acostumbrados. Su único anhelo es que nosotros nos inundamos en su amor generoso.  

La base de toda la generosidad es de primero darnos cuenta de qué tan bendecidos estamos, especialmente en el amor del Señor Jesús que nos ha perdonado por nuestros pecados. Nuestra respuesta por las bendiciones de la vida es de estar agradecidos hasta el punto de que todas nuestras oraciones sean una expresión de nuestra gratitud por todo lo que la vida nos ha dado. El resultado natural de la gratitud es la generosi‐dad. Si estamos tan bendecidos por el Señor por todos nuestros regalos del Reino de Dios, entonces sin importar lo que ocurra en nuestra vida diaria, tenemos más de lo que necesitamos. Esto es lo que significa hacer la voluntad de Dios. El dar diariamente todo lo que tenemos por el bien de los demás, especialmente el perdonar, reconociendo que nuestra confianza esta en Dios, quien nos ha invitado a participar en su Reino por nuestras obras de generosidad.                          P. Joe Robillard

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA … Jesús y la ley

Éxodo 22:20-26 La alianza de Dios pedía que se atendiera a los más vulnerables de la sociedad. En aquellos tiempos, los más vulne-rables eran las viudas, los huérfanos y los ex-tranjeros. A ellos había que respetar, cuidar y proporcionar la dignidad de hijos de Dios que la sociedad les negaba. La ley contemplaba este cuidado, pero a menudo era ignorada. 1 Tesalonicenses 1:5C-10 Se encuentran aquí expresadas las tres virtudes teologales: fe, esperanza y amor. Para Pablo, las tres van estrechamente unidas y definen a la persona cristiana. Pablo no predica palabra humana, sino la palabra que está llena del Espíritu de Dios y, por tanto, produce frutos. Mateo 22:34-40 Encontramos de nuevo aquí otra pregunta de los fariseos que, otra vez, no tienen interés en aprender algo nuevo, sino en tenderle una trampa a Jesús. Tenían 613 pre-ceptos y debían saberlos y practicarlos todos. Jesús responde con un resumen perfecto, que es la integración del amor de Dios y el amor al prójimo como la cumbre de toda la Escritura. Jesús habla del corazón y el alma. El corazón estaba considerado como el centro de todo el ser: vida, emoción y totalidad. El alma era la fuerza de vida o la propia vida.

Nuestra cultura: Aunque la palabra dada es muy importante para el pueblo hispano, la comunidad también se rige por otro principio expresado en el refrán: “Obras son amores y no buenas razones”; es decir, las palabras no son verdaderas a no ser que se expresen en acción.

Reflexiones para la homilía Se cuenta que los antiguos conquistadores españoles en América y otros lugares que colonizaban,

al verse lejos del poder de los reyes españoles, a menudo afirmaban que “acataban la ley, pero no la cumplían;” es decir, la reconocían como la ley vigente, pero en su lugar iban a hacer lo que les pareciera más conveniente. Algo de eso ha quedado como herencia tanto en la propia España como en todas las tierras que en algún momento estuvieron en el imperio. Quizá es una táctica de supervivencia y afirmación de la propia autonomía. En otras palabras, se haría lo que fuera más beneficioso en la situación.

Hay muchas actitudes frente a la ley, pero el mensaje de las lecturas de hoy nos recuerda que la verdadera ley y la palabra que es real y auténtica es la que está no sólo en los labios y en el entendimien-to, sino en la acción. En la primera lectura se nos habla de cómo la primera preocupación de Dios es la atención a los que, en la sociedad, parecen ser más débiles: los huérfanos y las viudas, que no tienen el beneficio de un varón en la casa que pueda proveer a las necesidades materiales y de seguridad. Estos dos grupos eran, en tiempos de Jesús, los últimos en la escala social y, aunque las leyes los protegieran, era fácil ignorar la ley y abandonarlos. El otro grupo al que se refiere es el de los extranjeros recordando, como dice el libro del Levítico, que todos fuimos, en algún momento, extranjeros. En la segunda lectura Pablo se alegra viendo cómo la comunidad de Tesalónica aceptó la palabra no solo como una palabra, sino como una fuerza de vida y de acción.

En el Evangelio se nos presenta a Jesús haciendo el resumen perfecto de todas esas leyes que existían y que se memorizaban, y que a menudo se cumplían mecánicamente, pero no con el corazón. Se reconocían, pero no se cumplían plenamente. Jesús nos recuerda que, en realidad, solo hay dos leyes verdaderas, porque, cumpliendo esas con toda la fuerza de la persona: alma, corazón y mente, se cum-plen, no ya las 613, sino millones de prácticas que van dirigidas a la expresión del amor y del bien común. Amar con todo el corazón, el alma y la mente implica estar totalmente ocupado en lo que quiere Dios; significa buscar la vida para todos. Todos y cada uno de los actos del día, por muy pequeños que sean, si se hacen con amor y por amor, producirán amor y frutos de vida. Las cosas que se hacen sin amor, según Jesús, podrían parecer estar ajustadas a la ley, externamente; pero en realidad, son ilegítimas, porque no responden a esos dos grandes preceptos de la ley de Dios.

Para la reflexión: ¿Cómo me ocupo de los más débiles de la comunidad y la sociedad? ¿Expresan mis acciones diarias el amor, es decir, la búsqueda del bien para todos, que es la ley de Dios?

Tema de Reflexión: El fin de la violencia empieza en ti Continúa… ¿Qué se puede hacer ante la violencia? Quizá no sea posible cambiar todo el mundo, pero cada uno puede comenzar por sí mismo. Si no es posi-ble conseguir que acaben las guerras inmediatamente y que cambien las políticas de los gobiernos y que cese la violencia en las ciudades, sí es posi-ble formar a personas pacíficas que poco a poco vayan transformando el mundo. Tu puedes comenzar por ti mismo. ¿Es la no violencia lo mismo que la pasividad o la cobardía? Cuando Jesús se vio enfrentado a la violencia de su propio arresto y muerte, no respondió con violencia. Le pidió a Pedro que guardara la espada. ¿Es que Jesús era cobarde? Cuando los trabajadores migrantes de California se vieron una y otra vez víctimas de la violencia que negaba sus derechos como trabajadores, César Chávez no los organizó para la lucha contra los propietarios, sino para la resistencia no violenta. ¿Sería que César Chávez era pobre y no podía conseguir armas? Cuando los habitantes de India se dieron cuenta de la opresión y discriminación a la que habían estado sometidos durante siglos, no salieron a la calle con violencia. Su líder, Gandhi, no los llamó a la violencia. ¿Sería porque eran muy pocos y no se podían enfrentar a un ejército? En todos estos casos, la respuesta es no. Jesús no era un cobarde y los líderes populares podrían haber incitado a la violencia y no lo hicieron. Eli-gieron el camino de la paz. Eso requiere mucha más valentía que la agresión. La gente más débil es la que, sin pensar, utiliza la fuerza bruta.
