Fr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s Korner At the suggestion of both my surgeon and

physical therapist, I am supposed to avoid rough surf while at the beach this summer, to prevent any further damage to my healing shoulder. As one who has enjoyed ocean swimming and big waves since childhood, I will be honest and admit that this discipline is very challenging for me... but I am doing my best to follow these instructions. On the beach I have just started reading Jesuit Fr. James Martin's new book "Jesus", so I will give you an evaluation when I return. This weekend we welcome Fr. Leo Holleran to preside at Mass on Saturday evening. Fr. Leo is now serving as Catholic chaplain at Frederick Memorial Hospital. On Sunday we welcome Fr. Ernest Cibelli, who is currently serving as an assistant to former Archbishop Cardinal O'Brien in Rome, but is back in the states this summer doing research doctoral studies. Although I can't do so in person, I am happy to announce that we have now surpassed our Campaign goal in pledges! This has been accomplished by the generous caring of so many parishioners who have shared their resources with their parish community... thank you, thank you, thank you! This now clears the way for Archdiocesan approval to move forward, but we will continue to raise funds to reduce our future mortgage. If you still have a pledge form at home, please send it in! The Drexel Shrine at Saint Katharine Drexel's convent near Philadelphia is putting together a new cookbook and inviting people from parishes with the SKD name across the country to submit recipes. Use the bulletin insert this weekend if you'd like to participate. This past week, our own living connection to our patron saint, Mary Brockway (who as a young girl lived down the street from that same convent) celebrated her 100th birthday. We are so happy to have her joyful and loving presence among us, and so... Happy Birthday, Mary!!!!!

CAPITAL CAMPAIGNCAPITAL CAMPAIGNCAPITAL CAMPAIGNCAPITAL CAMPAIGN REPORT REPORT REPORT REPORT

Capital Campaign Goal ......................... $1,850,000

Our faith community is so blessed by your generosity! In addition to our monthly Building Fund collection and the redemption of some remaining pledges from our previous capital campaign, we have now received:

Total of Pledges Made.................................. $1,852,884 Percent of Goal Achieved ..................................... 100% Total of Cash Received.................................... $621,370 Households Participating ..........................................354 Number of New Pledges this week ..........................2 Amount of New Pledges this week ..............$12,500

Thanks to everyone helping us reach our goal!

Thanks to All who so generously donated items for the Emergency Shelter last weekend. Our parishioners

donated enough items for the year round shelter to fill three SUV's. In addition, several parishioners made monetary contributions. Your donations were equivalent to those made for the cold weather shelter. The

shelter had run out of many of the items that were contributed. "Oh's" and "Ah's" were heard as the items were unloaded in the middle of a rain storm. Special thanks to Mary and Chris Wilson; Kathy, Tim and Daniel Moore, who helped to deliver the donations; and to Martha Matlick, who coordinated the collection.

St. Vincent de Paul Society: Hearing today's Gospel, we can trust that God knows our love and good deeds. and that he will mercifully gather us into his kingdom. This week, please say a special prayer each day for the poor and forgotten. Volunteers are always welcome. If you are interested in volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul, please call 301-662-4676.

The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration © 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: 1-800-933-1800. Written by Corinna Laughlin. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy © 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, 2013.

“[Through the divine office] the whole course of the day

and night is made holy by the praises of God”

(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 84)

For many Catholics, the Divine Office is a well-kept secret.

But it shouldn’t be. While the Eucharist is our highest form of prayer, it is not the only way the Church gives praise to God. The Divine Office is how the Church obeys the command to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, NRSV). It is also known as the Liturgy of the Hours, and as that name suggests, marks the hours of the day with seven different “offices” or liturgies: Morning Prayer (Lauds); Midmorning Prayer; Midday Prayer; Midafternoon Prayer; Evening Prayer (Vespers); Night Prayer (Compline); and the Office of Readings, which may be prayed at any time of day. Bishops, priests, deacons, and many religious communities of men and women are bound to pray the Divine Office daily. While it is optional for most of us, the Council Fathers hoped that all Catholics would come to know and love this form of prayer.
