Fr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s KornerFr. Keith’s Korner The Easter season concludes each year with the

celebration of the great Feast of Pentecost, which we observe as the "birthday of the church". As is our tradition, we will have a festive Pentecost Breakfast between the two Masses on Sunday 8 June, and you may purchase tickets in the Gathering Space on any of the preceding weekends. You might also start looking for the red outfit you will wear to Mass that weekend! Our annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be held this summer from 23-27 June. Each year it is so inspiring to see our parish children singing and praising the Lord with such joy and enthusiasm each morning! I encourage you to enroll your children using the form that is included in this bulletin, and that is also available on our parish website (www.saintdrexel.org) and at the Information Center after Mass. We are also in need of a number of donated items to make the week a success for our children. Please check the insert in the bulletin this week to see if you can help us in this way. For some time there has been an inter-parish effort in the Frederick area to organize young adult ministry. Currently, this group is offering "Theology on Tap" sessions on Monday evenings at Jojo's (on E. Patrick Street), This program focuses on topics of faith and contemporary issues that directly affect the lives of young adults (ages 18-35). Each night includes time to socialize, listening to a speaker, and a question and answer session. The speaker this week will be Archbishop Lori, and all young adults are welcome. Blood is always in demand, especially for medical emergencies, and we try, as a parish, to care for the wider community by sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive twice a year. If you are at least 16 years old and able to donate, please sign up for an appointment during our next parish drive on Saturday 14 June. The sign up board will be on a table in the entrance hallway.

The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration © 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: 1-800-933-1800. Written by Kristopher W. Seaman. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy © 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, 2013.

“[Lay liturgical ministers] must all be deeply imbued

with the spirit of the liturgy”

(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 29)

We have all known people whose liturgical ministry seems to be enmeshed in their very beings. These

individuals might be ministers of hospitality who radiate warmth, or readers or lectors whose proclamation of the Scripture seems to come from a spirit deep within them. Being “imbued with the spirit of the liturgy” is different than being trained well in a ministry. Those who are imbued with the liturgy have allowed the liturgy to form and transform them. The lector or reader with a deeply imbued spirituality has studied Scripture to develop a spiritual-ity of the Word, and prays and meditates with the Scriptures. This spirituality goes beyond the knowledge of the liturgy to the spirit of the liturgy. This spirit of the liturgy is lived in the minister’s life.

The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration © 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: 1-800-933-1800. Written by Kyle Lechtenberg. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy © 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, 2013.

“The people should be encouraged to take part”

(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 30)

A hallmark of the reformed liturgy is this idea that the people

should take part in it. Elsewhere in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we hear that the act of participating in the liturgy is the “right and duty” of the baptized. Here, the Council

Fathers show just how expansive that right and duty is: It includes singing and speaking the various parts of the liturgy, but it also includes “actions, gestures, and bearing [posture].” Think of this as practicing our humanity. Just as Jesus Christ came to this world as a human being like each of us; just as he used words, songs, actions, and gestures to experience life as a human being; in our worship, we use our senses to commune with Christ and the Church. Through participating in the liturgy, our very human acts of praise and prayer are raised to the level of worship that honors our humanity by praising our Creator.
