The Cross of Jesus The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But that all changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus.

The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists it works great things

But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist. St. Gregory the Great

Stewardship Thought In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” At the end of the reading Jesus suggests there is great hope in the cross. Today’s followers of Christ recognize they are stewards of His entire legacy, including His cross and that through their mutual sacrifices God’s glory is revealed. They don’t live their lives in Christ only when it is convenient for them. They make a decision to take up their cross and carry it, no matter what the cost is to themselves. Reflect this week on the cross you bear in order to reveal God’s glory. How do you embrace that cross? How, at times, do you shirk that cross when it is not convenient?

A Prayer for Vocations from Bishop DiMarzio Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of Your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious live. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest……….Amen
