The Pastor’s Corner
The Birth of John the Baptist rarely falls on a Sunday. The
fact that it is celebrated with the rank of “Solemnity”
summarizes the importance of the day. Even in the womb,
John leapt for joy when Mary greeted her cousin, Elizabeth.
So close was the day of salvation. Note that the birth of Christ
is just six months after the birth of John.
During the Church Year, we usually celebrate the entrance
of a person into eternal life (i.e. their date of death). We
celebrate the physical birth of only three people in the liturgy
of the Church: Jesus (Dec. 25), Mary, Mother of God (Sept.8),
and John the Baptist (June 24). It is probably the oldest feast
celebrated by the Latin and Orthodox Churches. But why is
the day of John’s birth celebrated? Because it was meant that
the birth of him who, unlike the rest, was "filled with the Holy
Spirit even from his mother's womb," should be signalized as a
day of triumph (see the Catho lic Encyclopedia).
John, from the Hebrew etymology, means “God is
gracious.” Although I celebrate St. John the Evangelist as my
patron saint (Dec. 27), St. John the Baptist is a very important
person in salvation history. He is considered the bridge
between the Old and New Testaments. When he is depicted in
iconography, his hand alone pierces the shield of glory
surrounding Christ. He always is depicted as pointing to
Jesus. St. John the Baptist is called the “Great Precursor” in the
Orthodox Church. His birth celebrates the beginning of our
salvation.
And speaking of exciting beginnings! Fr. Jonathan
DeFelice, OSB, will be in residence at St. Margaret’s! He will
be on staff at the Marriage Tribunal. Ms. Patty Flatley will
begin her role as the school secretary replacing Mrs. Clancy,
and Mr. Anthony DeCrescenzo will be the new Parish
Financial Manager replacing Mrs. Pita. All three are gifted
people who will render St. Margaret’s their faith-filled
services. Welcome to St. Margaret’s Fr. Jonathan, Patty, and
Anthony. I look forward to your talented assistance in the
future.
A safe and happy Fourth of July to all!
