2 Fr. Paul’s Message Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary, If you don’t know her already, I would like to introduce you to one of my favorite saints: St. Therese of Lisieux, mystic and doctor of the Church, whose feast day is October 1st.

During her few years on earth this young French Carmelite was scarcely to be distinguished from many another devoted nun, but after her death, through her letters, the word-of-mouth tradition originating with her fellow-nuns, and especially through the publication of her autobiography, “The Story of a Soul”, Therese soon came to mean a great deal to numberless people; she had shown them the way of perfection in the small things of every day. Many miracles and graces were being attributed to her interces-sion.

The parents of the later saint were Louis Martin, a watchmaker of Alencon, France, and Azelie-Marie Guerin, a lacemaker of the same town—both are now canonized saints as well! Only five of their nine children lived to maturity; all five were daughters and all were to become nuns. Francoise-Marie Therese, the youngest, was born on January 2, 1873. When she was only four, the family was stricken by the sad blow of the mother's death. In her autobiography, Therese writes that her personality changed after this, from being childishly merry she became with-drawn and shy. On Christmas Eve, just a few days before Therese's fourteenth birthday, she underwent an experience which she ev-er after referred to as "my conversion." In her own words: "On that blessed night the sweet infant Jesus, scarcely an hour old, filled the darkness of my soul with floods of light."' It was by reason of this vision that the saint was to become known as "Therese of the Child Jesus."

The next year she told her father of her wish to become a Carmelite but the authori-

ties refused to consider it while she was still so young. A few months later, her father took her to visit to Rome where she boldly asked permission of Pope Leo XIII himself. Therese soon joined her sisters in the Carmel at Li-sieux. With all the intensity of her ardent na-ture she embraced the convent life.

In 1889 Louis Martin suffered 2 paralytic strokes and a mental breakdown. Therese bore this sorrow heroically. The next year, at the age of 17, she took final vows. In spite of poor health, she carried out from the first all the austerities of the stern Carmelite rule. At 20, she was appointed to assist the novice mistress. At 23, on order of the prioress, Therese began to write her now famous au-tobiography. In her last chapter, she wrote: "I am a very little soul, who can offer only very little things to the Lord." After her father’s death, Therese occupied herself with reading and writing almost up to the end of her own life. That event loomed ever nearer as tuber-culosis made a steady advance. Although her bodily and spiritual sufferings were ex-treme, she wrote many letters, even carrying on a correspondence with several foreign missionaries whom she desired to join. Mo-ments of revelation came to her: "I will spend my Heaven doing good on earth." "My 'little way' is the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute self-surrender…" In June, 1897, Therese was removed to the infir-mary and on September 30, with the words, "My God . . . I love Thee!" she died. She was only 24 years old.

The Church was to recognize a pro-found and valuable teaching in St. Therese’s ‘little way' of spiritual childhood. Only 26 years after her death she was beatified by Pope Pius XI, and in the year of Jubilee, 1925, he proclaimed her a saint. Two years later she was named heavenly patroness of for-eign missions along with St. Francis Xavier. St. Therese of the Child Jesus, pray for us!

Estimadas Familias y Amigos de Santa Margarita María,

Si no la conoces, quisiera presentarte a una de mis santas favoritas: Santa Teresa de Lisieux, mística y doctora de la Iglesia, cuya fiesta es el 1 de octubre.

Durante sus pocos años en la tierra, esta joven carmelita francesa apenas podía distinguir-se de muchas otras monjas devotas, pero después de su muerte, a través de sus cartas, la tradición de boca a boca se originó de sus compañeras y especialmente a través de la publicación de su au-tobiografía, "La historia de un alma", Teresa pronto vino a significar mucho a innumerable gente; ella les había mostrado el camino de la perfección en las pequeñas cosas de cada día. Muchos milagros y gracias estaban siendo atri-buidos a su intercesión.

Los padres de la santa eran Louis Martin, un re-lojero de Alencon, Francia, y Azelie-Marie Gue-rin, una fabricante de listones de la misma ciudad ¡ambos ahora son santos canonizados también! Sólo cinco de sus nueve hijos vivieron hasta la madurez; las cinco eran hijas y todas iban a ser monjas. Francoise-Marie Teresa, la más joven, nació el 2 de enero de 1873. Cuando tenía sólo cuatro años, la familia fue golpeada por el triste golpe de la muerte de la madre. En su autobio-grafía, Teresa escribe que su personalidad cambió después de esto, de ser infantilmente alegre se volvió retraída y tímida. En la víspera de Navi-dad, pocos días antes del cumpleaños de Teresa, ella experimentó una experiencia a la que siem-pre se refirió como "mi conversión". En sus pro-pias palabras: "En aquella bendita noche el dulce niño Jesús, apenas de una hora de vida, llenó las tinieblas de mi alma con inundaciones de luz". Fue por esta visión que la santa debía ser conoci-da como "Teresa del Niño Jesús”.

Al año siguiente le contó a su padre su de-seo de convertirse en Carmelita, pero las autori-dades se negaron a considerarlo porque aún era muy joven. Unos meses más tarde, su padre la llevó a visitar Roma, donde ella audazmente pidió permiso al mismo papa León XIII. Teresa pronto se unió a sus hermanas en el Carmelo de Lisieux. Con toda la intensidad de su ardiente naturaleza

abrazó la vida del convento.

En 1889, Louis Martin sufrió dos acciden-tes cerebro vasculares paralísis y una crisis men-tal. Teresa soportó heroicamente esta pena. Al año siguiente, a la edad de 17 años, tomó votos definitivos. A pesar de la mala salud, llevó a cabo desde el principio todas las austeridades del seve-ro régimen carmelita. A los 20 años, fue nombra-da para asistir a la novicia maestra. A los 23 años, por orden de la priora, Teresa comenzó a escribir su famosa autobiografía. En su último capítulo escribió: "Soy una alma muy pequeña, que sólo puede ofrecer muy pocas cosas al Señor". Des-pués de la muerte de su padre, Teresa se ocupó de la lectura y la escritura casi hasta el final de su propia vida. Este acontecimiento se alzó cada vez más cerca la tuberculosis hizo un avance constan-te. Aunque sus sufrimientos corporales y espiri-tuales eran extremos, escribió muchas cartas, in-cluso manteniendo una correspondencia con va-rios misioneros extranjeros a los que ella deseaba unirse. Momentos de revelación llegaron a ella: "Voy a pasar mi cielo haciendo el bien en la tie-rra." "Mi" pequeño camino "es el camino de la infancia espiritual, el camino de la confianza y la auto-entrega absoluta..." En junio de 1897, Tere-sa fue trasladada a la enfermería y el 30 de sep-tiembre con las palabras: "Dios mío..." ¡Te amo a ti!" ella murió. Tenía sólo 24 años.

La Iglesia debía reconocer una enseñanza profunda y valiosa en el "pequeño camino" de la infancia espiritual de Santa Teresita. Sólo 26 años después de su muerte fue beatificada por el Papa Pío XI, y en el año del Jubileo de 1925, la proclamó santa. Dos años más tarde fue nombra-da patrona celestial de misiones extranjeras junto con San Francisco Javier. Santa Teresa del Niño Jesús, ¡ruega por nosotros!

Some-times people can consider themselves su-perior to others because they have more money, power or education. We see this very circumstance with the divisiveness that is on the rise in our country today. What can we do as Christians to reflect Je-sus’ love to everyone regardless of their race, education or financial situation? THIS WEEK IN SMM HISTORY October 3, 1964 - Holy Name and Altar Soci-eties held the first parish Las Vegas Night. $1.50 admission. The Grans Prize was a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Other prizes in-cluded an electric toothbrush, a vegamatic and 2 quarts of hair shampoo. October 5, 1963 - The parish held it annual Bazaar, a 2-day event which included a Country Store, entertainment and a BBQ Beef Dinner. The profit was $11,704.75. The first Bazaar was held in 1947. October 7, 1990 - Msgr. Sartoris established a Parish Council.

INTEGRIDAD: “DEL DICHO AL HECHO, HAY UN TRECHO: Por Humberto Beltrán

Todos vivimos en determinados momentos una experiencia muy desagradable: en sentirnos cul-pables. Cuando el padre o la madre mueren, al-gunos hijos se desesperan porque han sido indi-ferentes con ellos durante la vida. En algunas familias, los hijos al crecer se envuelven en dro-gas o crímenes; los padres se sienten culpables y se preguntan: ¿Hicimos algo malo para que ellos tomaran este camino? A veces nuestros chismes causan enemistades y odios entre her-manos y amigos: en la conciencia nos echamos la culpa. Dentro de los matrimonios hay ciertos pecados que son como un peso sobre la con-ciencia: abortos, infidelidades. Cuando nos sen-timos culpables nos deprimimos, nos sentimos como paralizados, lamentamos, nos juzgamos como una basura. Lo grave es que frecuente-mente nos quedamos ahí: nos vemos morir. Pienso que al leer un tanto el evangelio nos pue-de indicar como hemos de enfrentar esta expe-riencia dolorosa de sentirnos culpables. Jesu-cristo nos indica cómo mirar el pecado. En la sagrada escritura encontramos con frecuencia conflictos y distinciones entre her-manos. Muchas veces suceden porque los hijos se olvidan de sus padres, o porque la envidia los distancia el uno del otro. Podemos pensar en Caín y Abel, en Esaú y Jacob, en José y sus her-manos, y en tantos otros casos. En el evangelio de San Lucas tenemos la conocida parábola del hijo pródigo, que es más bien la comparación de la conducta de los dos hermanos, contrastada con el amor sin límites de su padre. El evangelio de este domingo nos cuenta la parábola del hijo abiertamente rebelde pero que obedeció, y del hijo aparentemente obe-diente pero que desobedeció. Podemos ver fácil-mente ecos de la parábola del hijo prodigo. ¿Quién entra realmente en el Reino de los Cie-los? Ante Dios, los hechos cuentan mucho más que las palabras: “No todo el que dice ‘Señor, Señor,’ entrará en el Reino de los Cielos, sino el que hace la voluntad de mi Padre.”La obedien-cia al Señor debe ser probada con hechos; real-mente, cada uno es “responsable de sus obras,” como suele decirse; y como el viejo refrán enseña, “obras son amores y no buenas razones.”

La certeza de entrar al Reino de Dios. Nadie tiene certeza absoluta de entrar en el Reino de Dios; la entrada es un don gratuito. Se salvan los que reciben el don de la salvación en sus vidas, aún aquellos que quizás al principio pusieron resistencia y protestaron (que no que-rían trabajar) pero luego lo pensaron mejor, se arrepintieron, y obedecieron la voluntad de Dios; entran pues, aquellos que ahora trabajan, aunque antes dijeron que no querían trabajar. Por otra parte hay los “cristianos del ‘si’ por profesión”, pero que viven un ‘no’ constante; han adormecido su conciencia, y con sus pala-bras tratan de cubrir lo que no practican con sus obras. Dios mira más al corazón de las personas que a las palabras que salen de la boca, la resis-tencia (especialmente en los jóvenes), muchas veces no es más que una afirmación de la propia identidad, y no un rechazo del Padre. Dios quie-re que le respondamos con libertad y con res-ponsabilidad; por eso Dios nos hizo libres y no robots. Tenemos que cambiar radicalmente el modo de pensar, juzgar, obrar y hablar. Tene-mos que pensar como Jesús, pero hay algunos que piensan más como gobernantes que como cristianos; observan todas las leyes, menos las del amor, especialmente a los extranjeros.

Reflexión

A veces se puede decir un “si” a Dios y a los demás, pero en realidad se está diciendo un “no” : Cuando ofrecemos un saludo de paz falso en la misa a nuestros esposos (as); cuando va-mos a recibir la comunión sin un verdadero de-seo de trabajar por la unidad y comunidad con los demás; sino para servirnos de los demás o para que nos sirvan: cuando criticamos a otros y no hacemos esfuerzo para evitar lo que critica-mos; cuando el dinero es más importante que nuestra familia y que Dios.

Además de nuestra Adoración Nocturna el primer viernes de cada mes, ahora tendremos exposición del Santísimo Sacramento durante el día en la iglesia. Comenzará después de la Misa de las 8:15am y continuará hasta las 6:45pm. justo antes de la Misa del Primer viernes, a las 7:00pm, tendremos la Bendición con El Santísimo. Las pruebas que la sociedad

moderna somete a los cristianos, de hecho, son mu-chas y afectan la vida personal y social. No es fácil ser fiel al matrimonio cristiano, practicar la miseri-cordia en la vida cotidiana, dejar espacio para la ora-ción y el silencio interior, no es fácil oponerse públi-camente a opciones que muchos dan por sentadas, como el aborto en caso de un embarazo no deseado, eutanasia en caso de enfermedad grave, o la selec-ción de embriones para prevenir enfermedades he-reditarias. La tentación de dejar de lado la propia fe está siempre presente y la conversión se convierte en una respuesta a Dios que debe ser confirmada varias veces a lo largo de la vida ". - El Papa Bene-dicto XVI. La Parroquia de Santa Margarita María reza para poner fin a la muerte por manos humanas: el aborto, la eutanasia y la pena de muerte.

SALVAGUARDANDO A LOS NIÑOS DE DIOS Todos los adultos que son voluntarios en la parroquia están obligados a tomar una clase de Virtus llamada Protección de los hijos de Dios. Esta es una clase de tres horas que se ofrece en la parroquia y es muy informativo. Si usted es voluntario en la parroquia y aún no ha tomado la clase o ha tomado la clase hace más de cuatro años, tendrá que tomar la clase. Todos los voluntarios que tengan algún contacto con menores deben tomarse las huellas dactilares. Si está trabajando con menores y no se le han tomado huellas dac-tilares, debe hacerlo.

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN

All adults who are volunteering in the parish are required to take a Virtus class called Protec ng God’s children. This is a three hour class that is offered at the parish and is very in-forma ve. If you are volunteering in the parish and have not yet taken the class or you took the class more than four years ago, you will need to take the class. All volunteers who have any contact with minors must be fingerprinted. If you are working with minors and have not been fingerprinted you must do so.

As of September 20, 2017, 475 families have pledged $113,074.00 to the 2017 Together In Mission Campaign, that means we have 87% of our parish goal of $129,800.00. With only 11 weeks to go in this year’s campaign we need $24,345.00 in pledge payments and new commitments to meet our par-ish commitment. If you are one of the almost 1700 families who have not made a pledge yet, please prayerfully consider joining fellow parishioners in helping our parish meet or exceed its goal. To make a pledge, please fill out a pledge enve-lope, which can be found in the pew racks or at the parish office; and then return it to the parish via the Sunday collection baskets. You also can pledge and make donations online at: OurMissionLA.org. When making a pledge, please be sure to list the parish as: St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Lomita. This will ensure that your pledge will count toward our parish’s pledge goal.

The morning Bible Study Group meets eve-ry Thursday (except for holidays and vaca-tions) from 10-11:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Center. The Group, which is led by Fr. John, is continuing its study of St. Paul’s Let-ter to the Ephesians (chapters 5 and 6). All are welcome to join, even if you have missed previous meetings or have never studied the Bible before. FR. JOHN’S BIBLE STUDY GROUP

Many contemporary Christians believe Je-sus was the Messiah, but they don’t neces-sarily know why they believe he was the Messiah, much less why his first followers thought he was the long-awaited king of Israel. There are dozens of passages in the Old Testament that are interpreted as pointing to Jesus as the Messiah, but, when we turn to the Gospels, we find Jesus re-peatedly referring to himself and his mis-sion in terms of several prophecies from the book of Daniel. Challenge yourself to try to understand ancient Scripture from the perspective of Jesus! The evening Bible Study group will begin again soon (starting date, day, and time will be determined later).
