THE MISSION OF ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH
IS TO EXTEND THE KINGDOM OF GOD
BY SHARING GOD’S LOVE IN THE CHURCH COMMUNITY
THROUGH SPIRIT-FILLED LITURGIES, RELIGIOUS EDUCATION,
AND SERVICE TO OTHERS.

A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
+ Pax et Bonum!
Every February 2nd, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord,
which occurs forty days after Christmas, and is also known as Candlemas Day, since
traditionally today is the day that we bless all of our candles that are to be used throughout the
year. Today, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which falls on Sunday this year, supersedes the Fourth Sunday
in Ordinary Time. Our readings and prayers today will reflect this special Feast Day. We’re glad that you’re here with
us for this celebration! In a special way we welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for Masses this
weekend.
I wanted to make you aware that we have made the decision to NOT participate in the Destination Jesus Youth
Weekend coming up later this month. Our high school folks will not be attending. We will not need to use our
buildings to house the attendees. And our Parish will not be needed to assist with the putting on of the weekend. For
our part, this is not a decision that we have taken lightly, as St. Maria Goretti has been very involved in Destination
Jesus since its inception in 1995. The Youth Weekend is roughly the same age as our community. And yet, over
those years, Destination Jesus has changed a great deal. Sometimes, when we just keep doing the same thing over
and over every year, things can look very much the same on the surface, so much so that we go through all the
motions, but we can lose the meaning of why we are doing what we’re doing in the first place. The last few years have
seen the numbers of youth attending Destination Jesus continue to fall. It has gotten harder and harder to get our
youth to attend the weekend. In addition, there are now more opportunities than ever before, besides Destination
Jesus, for our youth to attend. There are more retreats, workshops, conferences, and events like the National
Catholic Youth Convention (NCYC) this past fall, right here in Indianapolis. In November, 35 youth and 7 adults from
our Parish attended NCYC, and had a wonderful experience. As a Parish family, we remain as committed as ever to
the very best programs and opportunities for the Faith formation of our young people. I, perhaps more than anyone,
am saddened that the Destination Jesus weekend is not working as it once did. Perhaps it is just time for something
new.
Throughout this month of February we’re going to be launching a new stewardship program called “Come Build
God’s Kingdom!” You’ll be hearing a lot about this in the next few weeks. Basically, we’re asking everyone to re-
evaluate what we are doing and how we are doing at responding to God’s great love! Keep reading the Bulletin and
watching your mail for more details. It’s going to be an exciting month!
I know several of you were able to attend the first “Civilian Response to an Active Shooter” education event that
took place last week. I thank Parishioner Bill Clifford of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department for putting on this
class for us. A second opportunity to hear this information is being offered this coming week, on Thursday, February
6th, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, in the Parish Office Narthex. Also, a special thank you to Jay Schemanske and all of our
Ministers of Welcome who have all shown such a special interest in this concern, and who have been so willing to
learn as much as they can to keep us all safe and at peace!
Tomorrow is the Feast of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, and Patron of those who diseases or injuries to the
throat. We will have the Blessing of Throats after both our 7:00 AM and our 5:30 PM Masses tomorrow. I have always
loved the Blessing of St. Blaise. I think it’s because the blessed candles used for the Blessing of Throats always
tickled my neck! Come and join us tomorrow!
Have a great week! Let us keep one another in our prayers!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
Be careful of your thoughts for they may break into words at any time.
Welcome! For more than 24 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but
with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all
do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

Indiana Holy Family
Catholic Conference!
It is the only conference of its kind with a small-

each year with a third of those being children!
Separate programming is planned for adults; high

years; and a nursery for 1-2 year olds. Keep in mind that
Kids Corner (ages 1-11 years) closes February 17.
This year, we welcome musician and storyteller Steve
Angrisano, Dr. Tim Hogan, “The Gift of Cultural Hurri-

Difficulties and Joys of the Cross”. The registration fee

one of our highest rated caterers in Kokomo!
ALL Catholic elements are included: a Eucharistic pro-

(your children will visit it guided by a religious sister),
confession, and a vocations lunch for your high school

BEHOLD, I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW. —REV 2 1:5 DOL-IN.ORG/UIH ׀ [email protected] ׀ @DIOLAFIN
Uniting in Heart is the Diocesan pastoral plan to unite our diocese in the heart of Jesus Christ through living out the 3 Pillars of Mission, Community, and Witness.
Many questions have arisen from the 2030 Pastoral Plan. This week we learn about our role as missionary disciples.
MISSIONARY DISCIPLESHIP
Missionary discipleship is following Jesus Christ in and through His Church to share the gospel message
with our family and our neighbors, to the ends of the earth. Missionary discipleship involves getting all
the baptized to understand that we are called to mission—not maintenance.

IMMUNIZATION NOTICE
FOR 5TH GRADE PARENTS
Eleven-year-olds entering
6th grade in Indiana are required to receive the menin-
gitis vaccine, and an updated tetanus/pertussis vac-
cine known as “Tdap”. The “tetanus booster” cannot be
received until after the 10th or 11th birthday (depending
on the drug manufacturer). This vaccine has dramati-
cally lowered the number of pertussis cases in middle
school and high school students in Indiana. The menin-
gitis vaccine has reduced incidents of this serious dis-
ease in our adolescent and young adult group. Make
sure all vaccines are received before entering 6th
grade. If you have questions regarding the above, call
the nurse’s office, 317-896-5582, ext. 204.
