A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
+ Pax et Bonum!
Hello! Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish as we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time! It is good to be together again around the Altar of the Lord! We do welcome all our guests and visitors who join us for Mass today! We are all very happy to have you with us to pray and praise our Lord! In a special way, we welcome our brothers and sisters who are here in Westfield visiting Grand Park for sports events this weekend. Thanks for making the time to join us for Mass! We’re glad you’re here!
I have been asked by several of you about an event that we have been promoting the last few weeks, that is going to take place at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Carmel on November 12. Why are we promoting an event so far out in advance? And why are we promoting an event that is happening all the way down at St. Elizabeth Seton in Carmel, not that far from the county line? Let me tackle both of those questions here today. First of all, we’re talking about this and promoting this event so early because it is a ticketed event, and there are a limited number of tickets available. This means that if you want to go to this Matthew Kelly event, you need to get a ticket now, because all indicators are that in a few weeks, “Living Every Day With Passion and Purpose” is going to be sold out. That’s why we’re talking about this now, and so early. Secondly, why are we talking about an event that is happening at St. Elizabeth Seton? This Matthew Kelly event is being co-sponsored, or quad-sponsored I guess you’d say, by four of the parishes of the Carmel Deanery, and St. Maria Goretti is one of those four parishes. So while the event is NOT being held here in Westfield, we are still one of the sponsoring organizations for the day. This event is one of our major adult religious education events of this fall. We are hoping that as many as possible might be able to join us for the day. Connie Anderson is heading up our portion of the event. For tickets or more information, you can contact her at our Parish Office, 867-3213, ext. 1203; [email protected].
It is also that time of year, once again, for all of us to think and pray about who we might invite to come to RCIA this year. The Precatechumenate, or Inquiry phase of RCIA, is set to start here at St. Maria Goretti, Monday, August 8. That is just a little over one week away! Joining the Precatechumenate does NOT mean that anybody is going to join the Church or be Catholic. It is just the starting point. It is a chance to get some basic information about the process and to ask lots of questions and get the right answers about the Catholic Faith. This year, I especially appeal to the number of spouses that we have here at St. Maria Goretti who are not Catholic but who are better Catholics than many Catholics. We have several non-Catholics, married to Catholics, who are with us every weekend for Mass! For most of us here, so many times nobody even realizes that you aren’t Catholic. Maybe this is your year to finally make it “official?” Please consider joining us for the launch of the Precatechumenate! Who do you know, that you could invite? Now is the time!
Last week, I offered a reminder that we have until December 31, 2016, to finish off our pledges made to Fruitful Harvest 2015 and 2016. Finishing off that Campaign well is very important to our Parish Family. This October, our Diocese, the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana, is going to kick off, the “Stewards of Christ…Sharing our Gifts,” Fruitful Harvest 2017-18 Fundraising Campaign. As a Catholic community, we are called to respond to God’s grace in our lives, by sharing our blessings. Even now it is not too early for ALL of us to start prayerfully considering how we can help out and what we can do and pledge for the next two years. Once again, St. Maria Goretti will do a “dovetail” campaign to further reduce our debt. We are getting a little closer every month to retiring the debt completely! Let’s pray to make this fall’s Campaign a huge success!
I can’t believe that school starts in just a little over a week! This summer has gone by very quickly! Enjoy these days! Let us keep one another in our prayers!
In Christ, Fr. Kevin
If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it!
Welcome! For more than 20 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin

Year of Mercycy
“God's patience has to call forth in us the courage to return to Him, however many mistakes and sins there may be in our life. ... It is there, in the wounds of Jesus, that we are truly secure; there we encounter the boundless love of His heart. Thomas understood this. Saint Bernard goes on to ask: But what can I count on? My own merits? No, ‘My merit is God's mercy. I am by no means lacking merits as long as He is rich in mercy. If the mercies of the Lord are manifold, I too will abound in merits.’ This is important: the courage to trust in Jesus' mercy, to trust in His patience, to seek refuge always in the wounds of His love.” ~ Pope Francis, Homily, April 7, 2013

SMG Ministry Fair ir
September 10 & 11
Start thinking now about how you could get involved—
for the first time or the 100th time— with your Parish Family!
What is the purpose of the Ministry Fair?
The goal of the Ministry Fair is to bring an aware-
ness of the many ministries at St. Maria Goretti
and provide a convenient way for parishioners to
ask questions and learn more.
This parish is awfully big. Do you really need me?
YES! There is room for everyone to be a part of a
ministry that you have interest in or a talent to
share. The more people who get involved, the more
people who can be served.
Can I find out beforehand what ministries
are offered, so I know which ministry
I may be interested in?
On page 7 of this bulletin is a list of ministries and
their contacts. If you received a copy of the St. Ma-
ria Goretti 2016 Directory (nonphoto directory) this
past spring, check out the “Parish Ministries” sec-
tion on page 17. There’s a brief description of near-
ly all the ministries. Our Website, smgonline.org,
also offers descriptions: Go to the “Get Involved”
section of the “Ministries” tab. Each ministry has a
+Details… area. Just click and read.
After Mass, stop by our ministry tables in the Church Narthex to learn more and to share God’s
Love through the service of others.
“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a
single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything you gave me.” ~ Erma Bombeck

Thanks for supporting our SCRIP program!
USED UNIFORM SALE The sale will take place Wednesday, August 10, during the ice cream social at 4 pm. Drop off the items you are selling or donating items to the school office. Unsold items will be in a bag in the PTO closet after the sale for you to pick up. If your items are not picked up by
