FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

This first Sunday of 2019 is Epiphany Sunday, a day in which we celebrate the manifesta<on of the Christ Child to the

whole world. St. Ma9hew’s gospel tells the story of magi, or astrologers, spoCng a star at its rising and interpre<ng

the appearance of this star as a celes<al sign announcing the birth of a great ruler. The magi, represen<ng Gen<le

people all over the ancient Middle East, travel “from the east” to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to what they

perceive to be “the newborn king of the Jews.” King Herod is “greatly troubled” by the pilgrimage of the magi,

obviously feeling threatened by the very prospect of a new threat to his royal throne. So Herod consults the experts

of the Hebrew Scriptures of the <me and learns that Micah once prophesied that Israel’s long awaited messianic ruler

would be born in the town of King David’s birth, the <ny outback town of Bethlehem. The King then instructs the

magi to go there and discover the whereabouts of the child, and then report back to him so that he too can go and

pay the infant king homage, which is obviously a ploy to seek and destroy this royal baby. The magi proceed to follow

the star all the way to the house where Mary, Joseph and Jesus were staying. They enter the house, pay their

respects to the Christ Child and present him with three precious giJs fit for a king: gold (for royalty); frankincense (for

worship of God); myrrh (for a proper burial). The magi are then warned in a dream to ignore Herod’s request. So they

depart for their own country, signifying that God, not the Roman Emperor or any other human ruler, would bring

about Israel’s Messiah, and usher in the Kingdom of God. The point St. Ma9hew is making in this sacred story is that

the Incarna<on of God is not just for a certain ethnic or religious group; it is not just for Jews or Jewish converts to

Chris<anity. The coming of God’s Son in the flesh is meant to be a blessing for the whole world. The famous trip of

the magi provides clear evidence that God intends the human birth of his eternally bego9en Son to be good news for

every human person, and to be the source of salva<on for everyone. The Solemnity of the Epiphany commissions

every Catholic to bear witness to our Lord and Savior to all those we encounter in the course of our lives, including

our own family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Everybody needs the gospel of mercy, the gospel of

God’s uncondi<onal love; and as bap<zed disciples of Jesus, we are the designated carriers of this good news to the

world around us. May this New Year be the <me for all of us to more consistent, more effec<ve witnesses to the Lord

Jesus and his Church!

News and Notes:

Welcome… Please welcome Patrick Elisha to our Music Ministry in the Collabora<ve. He is a keyboardist and will play

regularly at the 5PM Sunday Mass at SMG and other liturgies from <me to <me on the weekend. Patrick is currently

employed as an Ins<tu<onal Client Services representa<ve for M. Steinert & Sons in Boston and as a music teacher

around the area. He is hoping to form a musical group of teens and young adults to play and sing at the 5PM Mass.

Welcome aboard, Patrick!

Thank you… Just a word of sincere thanks to all parishioners who offered cards and giJs to Fr. Tony and myself during

this Christmas Season! We are very blessed to serve as your priests in the Lynnfield Catholic Collabora<ve. Be

assured of our ongoing prayers and pastoral concern for you and your family in the coming year. A hearTelt thank

you to all those who have returned their Offertory Commitment pledge cards indica<ng the amount of their financial

support for their par<cular parish this calendar year. If you have not done so already, please return your card as soon

as possible. While you are at it, why not make a New Year’s resolu<on to invest your <me, talent and treasure more

generously in your parish’s life and mission…God will reward you many <mes over. Abundant blessings to all of you

in 2019!

If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to

introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please

let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

Welcome Holy Spirit

Throughout 2019, our Collabora<ve will be exploring

the mystery, meaning, and power of the Holy Spirit.

Most of us have a grasp of the concepts of God the

Father and God the Son in the form of Jesus Christ,

but we oJen find the Holy Spirit to be more

mysterious. The more we open ourselves up to the

Holy Spirit, the more he will fill us with his giJs. He is

our comforter, nurturer, and healer. He is our helper,

guide, and inner strength.

What does the Holy Spirit look like to you?

From the time that we were young kids growing up in Dorchester receiving First Communion, through our marriage, as we brought up our own four boys, and now as grandparents, Boston priests have been a guiding light that we reach out to in different situations that have come up in our lives. As parents, our faith life has helped us to guide our family. We are an ordinary family, and, like all families, things don’t always go smoothly. The priests we have known through the years, like Fr. Peter Martocchio, have helped us to learn to take things in stride and put our faith in God, and that there is always hope. While not perfect, ours has been a wonderful life, which has been enriched by many Boston priests who have helped us along the way.

Kevin and Trisha MuldoonImmaculate Conception Parish, Weymouth, with Fr. Peter Martocchio, now living at Regina Cleri, a residence for retired priests in good standing in Boston.

Priests have been a constant presence throughout our lives. Boston Priests. Here for us.
