Faithshare by Mary Ulliani St. Barbara Parishioner
How has COVID-19 impacted me? On March 11 I received no ca on that, in accordance with direc ves from the archdiocese, choir prac ce was inde nitely cancelled. Next came news that our church was closed. It saddened me that things I previously took for granted were gone. I had to cancel a baby shower that I was preparing to host. Since then, my weekly trip to the grocery store and walks around my neighborhood are the only places I go. However, I nd myself watching daily Mass, praying more and listening to spiritual talks. I am happy to give God more of the me and a en on that He rightly deserves. What do I miss most about my parish? I really miss the people. I miss singing in the choir. I miss all those who pray the monthly Scriptural Rosary at St. Barbara’s. I have been watching Mass and the rosary on Catholic TV but it’s not the same as doing it with people whom you know and love. How do I keep in touch with others? I keep in touch by telephone and text mostly. I check in with friends and rela ves to be sure they are doing OK. I get just as much, if not more, from these interac ons as I hope they do. Our rst grandson was born in the peak of the pandemic and, regre ably, we have not yet been able to hold him. How has my faith helped me? I realize more than ever how Scripture wri en many years ago is so relevant today. There has always been su ering, hunger, fear and abandonment and Scripture consistently tells us to turn to God and trust in His Goodness. He knows what’s best for us. He will nd greater good in evil. I especially nd comfort in the promise of Divine Mercy. What words of encouragement can I o er? God uses the good works of ordinary people to li the burden from others. The boomerang e ect is that this makes the ini ator of the good work feel be er too!

PRAYER FOR FATHERS GOD OUR FATHER, WE GIVE YOU THANKS AND PRAISE FOR FATHERS YOUNG AND OLD. WE PRAY FOR YOUNG FATHERS, NEWLY EMBRACING THEIR VOCATION; MAY THEY FIND COURAGE AND PERSEVERANCE TO BALANCE WORK, FAMILY AND FAITH IN JOY AND SACRIFICE. WE PRAY FOR OUR OWN FATHERS AROUND THE WORLD WHOSE CHILDREN ARE LOST OR SUFFERING; MAY THEY KNOW THAT THE GOD OF COMPASSION WALKS WITH THEM IN THEIR SORROW. WE PRAY FOR ALL THOSE GOOD MEN WHO MENTOR AND GUIDE US WITH FATHERLY LOVE. Un l the Church is open for regular ac vi es, Mary will con nue to hold the Scriptural Rosary via Zoom. A German proverb says that fear makes the wolf bigger than it is. When we are afraid our imagina on can
run wild, we feel helpless and trapped and we fail to act. Just ask any kid who hides under the bed when he hears a scary noise in the middle of the night! The only sound he wants to hear is the reassuring voice of his mom or dad. Faith leads us to the ba le of life and death as we struggle with sin and grace. There may be moments when we are afraid, pinned down by sin, failure and the constant tempta ons to abandon the good ght. Overcoming fear means we rely on God, calling on His grace and strength to help us in moments of weakness and fear. God’s Word and Sacrament reassure us that we have all we need and should not be afraid. Fear can hold us back from prac cing our faith. We are afraid of what others might think, or that our e orts will be rejected or may not be good enough. Let God worry about that. Do what you know is right, what God wants you to do. Your fears will disappear in the light of faith.
