St Veronica Parish 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Saint Veronica Parishioners, We are now back to Ordinary Time – But Wait – another Epiphany! Two weeks ago we celebrated the Epiphany of the Lord with the Magi following the Star. That was the first Epiphany or Manifestation of Jesus’ divinity. The Second Epiphany the Church celebrates was last Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord, another manifestation of Jesus’ divinity. This Sunday, although Ordinary Time, is the third manifestation or Epiphany the Church celebrates – the Wedding Feast in Cana where Jesus turns the water into wine. This was His first “sign” in John’s Gospel where His divinity is revealed. When we reflect on this “sign” it can take us in many directions. We can meditate on the transformation of the water into wine and how we can be transformed into something greater. We can meditate on how Jesus elevates the natural bond of marriage to a Sacrament. We can meditate on the relationship between God and his people as a spousal/marital relationship. We can meditate on the Eucharist which is our wedding banquet that anticipates the feast of Heaven. Or maybe we can simply meditate on the words of His Mother, “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary says these words to us, too – to you and to me. As a spiritual exercise, meditate on one of the above and share your thoughts with your family at dinner tonight and see where it leads you.

Respect Life. On January 22 our nation will mark the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal throughout the U.S. Since that decision, more than 56 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss -- often in silence. In the Catholic Church in the United States, January 22nd is designated as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.” As Catholics, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and/or giving alms. We mourn the many children’s lives ended by abortion and remember in prayer those who suffer the aftermath. The Church comes together to pray for the protection of all unborn children and to make reparation for abortion, trusting that the Lord hears our prayers. Feel free to use this prayer each day this week. “O God, source of all life and goodness, you fashion human lives in your image and likeness, and through your love, give each human life dignity, sanctity and priceless worth; awaken in every heart new reverence for the least of your children, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of human life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” This Thursday, January 20, the two Deacons of our Parish are hosting a Holy Hour for Life at 7:00 p.m. at St. Malachy Church. Please come and pray with us.

9 Days for Life. January 19-27, 2022. 9 Days for Life is a novena for the protection of human life. Each day’s intention is accompanied by a short reflection and suggested actions to help build a culture of life. To sign up for daily prayers and reflections during the 9 Days for Life, go to: www.respectlife.org/9-days-signup If you or someone you know has suffered through an abortion, please begin today to exper ience the forgiveness, freedom and peace waiting for you in the tender embrace of God's love and mercy through Project Rachel. Project Rachel is a confidential Catholic outreach ministry offering hope and healing to women and men hurting from past abortions. Project Rachel is named after the Old Testament figure Rachel, who weeps inconsolably for her children "who are no more" until God came to her, offering hope for her future. (Jeremiah 31:15-17). Email: [email protected], Call: 508-651-3100, or write: Project Rachel, Archdiocese of Boston, 61 South Avenue, Natick, MA 01760. We are in the midst of celebrating First Penance for our Second Grade Students. This coming Saturday, January 22, our Students from St. Margaret church will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for their first time. Please keep them in prayer as they continue their preparation to receive Jesus for the first time at the Eucharist this spring. With the rise of COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, thank you for continuing to be vigilant about the importance of social distancing and washing your hands often. Cardinal Seán O’Malley has extended the Mask Mandate that all people attending public Masses and In-Person Faith Formation Programs wear masks through March 3rd, the day after Ash Wednesday. Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney

HOLY HOUR FOR LIFE

The annual Holy Hour for Life will take place on

Thursday, January 20th at 7:00 pm at St. Malachy’s

Church (main church). This is done as part of the

Archdiocesan observance of the National Day of

Prayer and Penance marking the 49th anniversary of

the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision legalizing

abortion on demand. This Holy Hour will be held at

parishes throughout the Archdiocese in solidarity

with those who travel to Washington DC on January

21st for the annual March for Life. We will pray

together for those who have been wounded by

abortion, for respect for the dignity of human life

from conception to natural death, and that those who

govern us may be guided by justice, truth, and a love

for the gift of life. The Holy Hour for Life is

organized by Boston Deacons for Life in

collaboration with the Pro Life Office of the

Archdiocese of Boston. Please join us; all are

welcome. We are also planning to live-stream the

service for those unable to attend.

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time When my five-year-old nephew and his grandmother went out for an early morning walk, they returned to find the door locked and Grandmom’s keys inside. Before Grandmom could figure out what to do, Aidan ran behind the house and a moment later, the front door opened. He had crawled though the doggy door and opened the door, clearly pleased with himself for thinking of such a clever solution. When God handed out talents and abilities, He was generous. Everyone has something and everyone can con-tribute. People tend to judge others or dismiss them because of some external quality that does not fit their expectations. But like any great gift, you cannot judge it by the way it is wrapped. Sometimes, when we are willing and our minds are open, we can discover treasures in places we would never expect. Some people are just waiting for the chance to share their gifts. When the right time and opportunity comes along, they will shine, often exceeding anyone’s expectations, including their own. The family is the first place where we should be able to share, to feel important and to make a contribution. In daily routines, special events or holiday celebrations, there are lots of opportunities for everyone to contribute. With love, support and a bit of encouragement, we can all be our best!
