TM the Collar For months now we have been traveling with JesusthroughtheproclamationofLuke’sgospel.ThisfestivalofChrist theKing is the last Sundayand culminationof thewhole liturgical year. Next Sundaywe begin Advent andthus begin again yet another paschal mystery journeythroughaliturgicalyear.Thisannualcelebrationremindsus that the dif iculties of discipleship are alwaysrewarded by the joy of victory. The cross leads to risenlife. As we embrace the cross in our own journey ofdiscipleshipeachday, wearespurredontofaithfulnessbyremembering that it all culminates in this victory. Eachyearwebeginandendthesamejourney.Whatkeepsthiscyclicpatternofourliturgicalcelebrationsfrombecomingtedious? The answer lies in our taking the time torecognize our own growth in discipleship and ourpersonalrelationshipwithJesusourKingduringthispastyear.Sincejudgmentisoneofthethemesoftheendtimes, itmightbegoodtotakesometimethisweektojudgeourown growth and preparedness to enter Paradise withJesus.Withoutsuchself-re lectionweruntheriskofeveryliturgicalyearsimplybeing likeallothers forus.Endingsand beginnings always give us an opportunity to assessgrowth and recommit ourselves to faithful discipleship.True, the cross is not something we would naturallychooseforourselves.Buttheendofthisliturgicalyearandthe beginning of the new one when we encounter ourvictorious Christ is exactlywhatwe need in order to befaithful to the disciple’s life of self-giving for the good ofothers.
Happy Thanksgivingtoeachofyouandyourfamilies.Aswecelebrate thisThanksgivingDay, letus remember thereasonwhywehavesuchadayeachyear.Anattitudeofthanksgivingreorientsusfromfocusingonagiftreceivedto encountering the gift-giver. An act of giving thanks, then, isalwaysakindofconversion.Thanksgivingdrawsus out of ourselves and toward another. Thanksgivinghelps us forget self and think of the other. Thanksgivingchanges us from self-absorption to other-centeredness.Thanksgiving turns us toward Godwho bestows all giftsandblessings.Fr. Jace
