A SUNDAY FOR REJOICING Today’s Gospel story of the prodigal son is a favor-ite of many. We can identify with all the major fig-ures and their crisscross of emotions. The father’s initial grief over his young son’s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son’s grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends is turned to delirious joy at the sight of his father. We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his father’s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For all his honora-ble toil and loyalty, there seems to be no celebra-tion. The father, however, is prodigal in his for-giveness and mercy. He expects the same generosi-ty from his older son. He wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found. This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to pause, consider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal children heading home. We are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In his death and resurrec-tion we have passed over. We are a new creation. In this we rejoice.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - God’s people enter the promised land, observe the Passover, and eat of the produce of the land. Second Reading - We are now ambassadors for Christ. Gospel - We must rejoice when our brother who was dead in sin repents and comes back to life.

During Lent Stations of the Cross will be every Friday 12 noon in English 7 pm in Polish

Gorskie Zale ( Bitter Lamentations) Will be sung after the Polish Mass on Sundays

The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint the chest of infants and hands of adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the fore-heads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry .

Being mindful of the poor is not an option for Christians. In fact, Jesus tells us that when we feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned and clothe the na-ked, we are encountering him. So along with fasting and praying, almsgiving has been a traditional Lenten practice. Jesus poured his life out for others. As his disciples, we are called to do the same in our everyday lives, as well as in the extra steps we take outside our ordinary lives and routines. Keeping the Corporal Works of Mercy in mind is helpful as we consider our Lenten Almsgiving: Feed the hungry (help at a soup kitchen, donate

food) Give drink to the thirsty (show hospitality to

those in need) Welcome the stranger (be welcoming to those

you meet) Clothe the naked (donate clothing to a shelter) Visit the sick (those who are hospitalized, home

bound or in nursing homes) Bury the dead( visit a cemetery, pray for the

dead) Deciding how to incorporate almsgiving into our Lenten practice doesn’t involve seeing what fits in-to our schedules. It is more about what Lent as a whole is all about; finding a quiet space and listen-ing to God’s call and being committed to follow Him wherever He leads us. We need Lent. In the midst of our busy lives, with temptations working to distract us from the call of Christ, the weeks of Lent are a gift. As we fast, pray and extend our hands to the poor, we are imi-tating Christ, joining ourselves more closely to Him. He suffered and sacrificed, so do we. He lives in eternal joy; so will we, as we follow Him in hope.

St. Mary’s Rosary Society would like to thank all who gave to our “Lenten Bake-Less Sale.” We were overwhelmed at the out-pouring of love and contribu-tions! Thank you all for your support and re-membering us in your Corporal Works of Mercy during Lent.

If you or someone you know is in need of a couch, please contact the Parish Office. One of our parishioners is willing to donate it to a fam-ily in need. Parish Office 732-356-0358

Lent: A Different Approach to Fasting Fast from anger and hatred. Give your family an extra dose of love each day. Fast from judging others. Before making judg-ments, recall how Jesus overlooks our faults. Fast from discouragement. Hold on to Jesus’ promise that he has a perfect plan for your life Fast from complaining. When you find yourself about to complain, close your eyes and recall some of the little moments of joy Jesus has given you. Fast from resentment or bitterness. Work on for-giving those who may have hurt you.
