Why Do Catholics Genuflect in a Church?
Catholics genuflect in Church in order to show our reverence to the True Pres-ence of Christ in the Eucharist. Imagine you ’ve been trans-ported to the middle ages.
You ’re summoned by the king to come before him in his palace. Before you go you put on your best, middle ages outfit – which is probably brown. You even wash behind your ears. When you walk into the throne room you know you ’re supposed bend one of your knees in admiration and respect of the king ’s authority and rank. Jesus Christ deserves the same kind of admira-tion and honor that would be due a grand king. Now (back to present day) imagine that you are walking into the throne room of the King of crea-tion, the Lord of Lords, the beginning and the end. When we walk into God ’s throne room, the church, out of respect for His glory hidden in the Tabernac-le we should genuflect. Genuflection is def ined as 'A reverence made by bending the knee, especially to express adora-tion of the Blessed Sacrament ' (CCC 1378). As we walk into the house of God, a church, we show our adoration for Him by kneeing before Him. 'Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. ' (Psalm 95:6)
January 10, 2020 Memorandum regarding Flu Season Suspen-sion of the Distribution of the Precious Blood
Given recent reports from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the CDC, the Office of Divine Worship is rec-ommending that all parishes, shrines and chapels within the Arch-diocese refrain from distributing the Precious Blood to the faithful until further notice. We are actively monitoring Influenza/Influenza-like Illness (ILI) activity in our region and have found it to merit seri-ous attention at this time. The MassDPH, in its report of Friday, January 10, 2020, rates Influenza-like Illness activity (ILI) as “high,” with widespread geo-graphic distribution throughout most of the territory of the Archdio-cese. Please note MassDPH and the CDC makes a similar assess-ment noting that Massachusetts is statewide at the highest level of ILI activity, and that it is also widespread throughout the state. We will continue to monitor the situation and will update the Archdiocese in the Weekly Mailing and the Divine Worship Face-
book Page.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading Isaiah 8:23-9:3 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14 Second Reading First Corinthians 1:10-13, 17 Gospel Matthew 4:12-23
Today’s readings are filled with inspiration and instruction. Isaiah reminds us that we no longer walk in darkness. For us, the ‘great light’ he speaks of is Jesus Christ. In the sec-ond reading, Saint Paul urges the community to “be united in the same mind and in the same purpose” and “let there be no division among you.” In the gospel, Jesus invites the first Apostles: “"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Do you see yourself as a fisher of men/women? Each of the readings offers us good advice for our time! Which one is God inviting you to give attention to in your life?

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

On this feast of the Presentation, the Gospel of Luke gives us a lovely scene on which to reflect. Mary and Joseph bring the child Jesus to the Temple to present him to the Lord. In the Temple, both Simeon and Anna, elders in the Temple, recognized Jesus as the Messiah, and gave wit-ness to his presence. We come to Mass each week and receive Jesus Christ in Holy Communion. As we go forth from Mass today, we too give witness to Christ. Let us pray that in all we say and do, Christ will be visibly present in our lives.
GRAND ANNUAL COLLECTION UPDATE
I want to thank all the parish families who have contribut-ed to this year’s Grand Annual Appeal. Your support and generosity are gratefully appreciated. The Grand Annual is an important part of our annual reve-nue and necessary to cover the day-to-day operating ex-penses. To date, we have received $61,069 which is 81% of our goal of $75,000. If every parish family makes a donation as their means allow, we will have another suc-cessful Grand Annual! Your donation may be made in installments if that’s more convenient for you. We ask every parishioner consider a gift as your means allow. You may also make a one-time gift online on our website (stmarysmelrose.org). SAINT MARY MOMS’ GROUP
Come join the mom's group at St. Mary's Catho-lic Church. We’ll be meeting at 9am on Fridays if anyone would like to join us. The aim of the
group is to gather for catholic discussions, bible study, pray-er and socialization while having little ones play alongside. If you're a working mom, we will do a meeting once a quarter with just moms in the evenings. If you are interested in join-ing please email me at [email protected].
Make it a Family Affair!
We need kids of all ages and/or fami-lies to bring the Gifts to the Altar at the 9:30
Family Mass. Please just “take our fish” from the table at the back of the Church and let an usher know you will bring the Gifts to the Altar. This will let everyone know that some-one is already set to bring the Gifts to the Altar. When you go back to get the Gifts just return our Fish! Please make sure you return our Fish! This is especially a great idea for our young people who have recently received or will be receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation this year as they can play another important role and be more active-ly involved in the Celebration of the Mass.
MINISTRY TO THE HOMEBOUND
The early Christian community began the prac-tice of bringing the Eucharist to those who were physically unable to attend the celebration of Mass. Here at Saint Mary’s, this practice contin-ues to be an important ministry. Our worshipping
community prays each week for our parishioners who are not able to be with us because of enduring illness and physi-cal limitations. If you have a family member, friend or neighbor who can-not come to church, we want to bring the Church, through Holy Communion, to them. Please call the rectory at 781-665-0152 to arrange for a Eucharistic Minister to visit.

BLESSING OF THROATS—FEAST OF SAINT BLAISE
Next weekend at all the Masses there will be a general blessing of throats, commemorating the Feast of Saint Blaise. St. Blaise was the Bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who was martyred under the reign of Licinius in the early fourth cen-tury. One reason for St. Blaise’s popularity arose from the fact he was a physician who cured, even performing miraculous
cures. Thereby, those who were sick, especially with throat ailments, invoked his intercession. Eventually the custom of the blessing of throats arose, whereby the priest held two crossed candles over the heads of the faithful or touched their throats with them while he invoked the prayer of the saint and imparted God’s blessing. In our present Roman Ritual, the priest prays, “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spir-it.” This practice continues today in much of the world.

Any Box Top$ that have not expired can still be turned in for school credit towards the $800 goal! Clipped Box tops are mailed into the company again on April 1st!
