Second Sunday of Lent

MT 17:1-9

Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Gospel Reflection:

The transfiguration in the Gospel readings today describes a dazzling transformation. The witness of which had a profound impact on Peter, James and John. The transfiguration renewed their vision and they felt compelled to perpetuate the experi-ence by remaining high on the mountain. Jesus encouraged them to continue their journey. From a mountain you can see the landscape from a different perspective, noticing landmarks which may not have been clear from below. Often climbing the mountains in our own lives; overcoming challenges, offers us an opportunity for a new perspective, a clearer vision. Much like Peter, James and John, when we behold the divinity of Jesus, our view is expanded, so that we can now see in a different way. This doesn’t deny the circumstances of our life or world, rather it shows us that in the midst of these circumstances, there is life, hope and each other. This is what allows us to endure, face and respond to the needs of our world.

Project compassion fundraising challenge. During Lent each grade is challenged to raise funds to

support CARITAS Australia to provide chickens to farmers in Cambodia. Each $50 raised will provide 50 chickens.

Cross Country 2020

We would like to invite all parents and friends to our 2020 Cross Country which will be held on

the school grounds on Monday 16th March. This Cross Country event is a pathway for children

to compete in higher levels. The first four children to complete the course in each age category

will then go on to the Diocesan Cross Country which is held in Coolah in Term 2. Children from

8 years of age are able to participate in this event.

Children in Years 2-6 are to wear their sports uniform. They may wear a coloured shirt, socks,

hair ribbons etc to represent their house colour.

We plan to start the first event around 9.30am on the primary playground with the 8 years boys

and girls.

The 8-10 years will be running 2km which is 4 laps of the oval (including Cadia Bank and around

the perimeter of the primary playground past the cricket nets) and the 11-12+ will be running

3km which is 6 laps.

Our Cross Country is a wonderful day of participation and fun! It is a fantastic opportunity to

gain points for houses and get some exercise with friends!

We look forward to seeing you on the sidelines cheering on the children!

engage in their child’s schooling.

Kindergarten & Year 1 Sports Morning

Friday 3rd April 2020

9.30am - 11am

Parents and family members are warmly invited to attend the Kindergarten and Year 1 Sports Morning on Friday 3rd April, 2019.

The students will participate in their Sports Houses beginning with a March Past at 9.30am on the primary playground.

This will be followed by tabloid games and non competitive running races.

Parents and friends are then invited to stay for a picnic morning tea. The morning will conclude at 11am.

They are also asked to wear their sport uniform, joggers and a hat labelled

with their name. Please ensure that they have a labelled drink bottle as well.

We look forward to seeing you at the Kindergarten and Year 1 Sports Morning.

This St Patrick’s Day we are wearing something green with

our school uniform. You could wear green socks, a green ribbon

or a green wristband.

Please also bring in a coin donation for Project Compassion,

remember the grade that raises the most money will enjoy a

“Movie Afternoon” in Week 11.

We will also have some healthy green treats in the Canteen.

So get ready to celebrate March 17th.

Student Representative Council (SRC) news

Friday 3rd April (week 10) the SRC will be supporting the Cancer

Council Foundation, an initiative led by Maddie Linsell-Ryan

and our SRC, in memory of Miss Steph who was

our dance teacher at St Mary’s. We will be holding a crazy hair day!

(no hair spray please but you can wear a wig)

Class News in 1 Blue

Welcome to the first term of 2020. What a wonderful start to Term One we have had! All students are engaged and ready for the year ahead. In Religion we have reflected on our School Motto ‘Learning, Justice, Love’. As a class we have brainstormed how we can have a lifestyle based around our motto. We will ensure to abide by this in our daily lives. Further to this we are currently studying the sacrament of Baptism. Our literacy focus in English this term is based on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The unit also allows students to explore traditional and fractured fairy tales in order to see stories from a different point of view.

Whole numbers from 0 to 9, revising days of the week and time on the hour are our opening topics in Mathematics. We are all learning to write our numerals the correct way round. Science this term will see us focus on the ‘Living World’. We have al-ready learnt the external features of living things, stating how living things grow and change and how humans use plants and animals in their lives. A few weeks ago we planted our own broad bean seed and we are watching them grow everyday.

Sport this term is ‘Striking and Fielding’. Year One are becoming quite confident at catching, throwing and dodging. This week sees us using both hands to strike using a paddle bat or a softball bat. Thank you to parents who have sent in all supplies required for a successful year and covered student workbooks, this is such a tedious task, however allows for such lovely presentation of work.

We look forward to seeing what other great things will

happen in 1 Blue as the year progresses. P.S. It’s not long now until we move into our new learning

space!

Orange Running Festival 2020

While some people may have been enjoying a Sunday morning sleep in, breakfast in bed or a lazy

morning, a super keen group of 40 students from St Mary's Catholic Primary School gathered at

Gosling Creek for the 5km Schools Challenge Fun Run.

There were lots of laughs and smiles as we prepared ourselves for the big race!

With our running bibs on, shoelaces tightly fastened and last minute drinks we began the race

with the pace of cheetahs! As we settled into a more achievable pace for a 5km event, I saw the

tremendous school spirit and sportsmanship start to shine! Older students helping younger

students, younger students helping older teachers and lots of fantastic encouragement along the

way!! We utilised every drink stop and cheered when we could run downhill!

As the heat of the day started to take its toll, we gave it all we had and powered to the finish line.

Everyone finished the race with a smile and received a well deserved medal and an icy cold

drink!

Thank you to all the students and parents who supported this event and helped make it another

fun and successful day for St Mary's! Can't wait to see you all again on the track in 2021!!

Diocesan Swimming

Yesterday a team of super fish headed to Dubbo for the Diocesan swimming carnival. It was a

warm day but the students from St Mary's were cool in the pool!

Once again there were some fabulous swims and personal best times were achieved.

The children showed tremendous support for each other and I heard the cheering could be heard

all the way back in Orange!

A special mention must go to the following children who swam exceptionally well and will now

progress to the Polding level of swimming which will be held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic

Centre on March 25th.

Last but not least, I would like to thank all the parents who continually support our students and

staff at these events by timekeeping. Without your help these carnivals would not be able to run

effectively. Your support is always greatly appreciated.

Coronavirus

We receive regular updates from the Catholic Education Office in Bathurst on responses to the Corona-virus. There are no reported cases in the Central West and certainly nothing in our school. We are re-minded to use caution and common sense. Our latest memo contained this advice: Sending Home Sick Students and Staff As the impact of the virus on children and healthy adults can be quite mild there may be a tendency to continue working and attending school and hence increase the risk of infecting others. This is in contrast to SARS and Swine, where most people were quite unwell if infected. The advice from Health is that schools should be very strong on sending home staff and students who have the slightest sign of illness. This is not time for soldiering on with coughs and colds. As we are now entering into our cooler months when coughs and colds naturally occur this is good, com-mon sense advice. Staying healthy is a priority for all of us. Good personal hygiene and thoughtful practic-es will go a long way to staying well at school. - Kerry Maher
