The Christian life must be a dialogue with Jesus because – this is true – Jesus is always with us, he is always with our problems, with our struggles and with our good works.

22nd April 2021 Term 2 Week 1

Our Vision With Jesus Christ as our inspiration and guide,

St Mary's Catholic Primary School Orange is a Professional Learning Community that works in collaboration with family, church and community to celebrate high levels of learning for all.

Third Sunday of Easter (Year B)

Luke 24:35-48

The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way,

and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them,

“Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.

Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?

Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.

Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed,

he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?”

They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them,

“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you,

that everything written about me in the law of Moses

and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.”

hen he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer

and rise from the dead on the third day

and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,

would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

You are witnesses of these things.”

Reflection:

The illness Christians have is this: we are afraid of joy. It is better to think:

“Yes, God exists, but he is out there. Jesus is risen, he is out there!”. A little distance.

We are afraid of Jesus drawing near because this gives us joy”.

Many times we are either startled when this joy comes to us, or we are full of fear

or we believe we are seeing a ghost, or we think that Jesus is a way of acting:

“We are Christians and we have to do it this way!”.

But where is Jesus? “No, Jesus is in Heaven”. Do you speak with Jesus?

Do you tell Jesus: “I believe that you are alive, that you are risen, that you are close to me, that you will not

abandon me”? The Christian life must be a dialogue with Jesus because – this is true – Jesus is always with

us, he is always with our problems, with our struggles and with our good works.

The process is a little different from previous years. I suggest you have the note titled Dates and times for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion 2021, to refer to as you read this letter.

We will have 2 weekends in Term 1, Term 2, and Term 3, where your child will be able to celebrate their Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. It is vital that when you choose a group (A-F) that you are able to commit to all 3 dates in your chosen group.

The dates you must be able to commit to include:

1. The parent information session,

2. Reconciliation and rehearsal

3. First Holy Communion date.

If you are not able to commit to all 3 of these dates in a particular group, please have a look at the other groups to see if there is one that you are able to fully commit to.

At the parent information session you will be given details on how the Reconciliation and First Holy Communion process will take place. You will also be given other details like how to book your child’s Reconciliation and First Holy Communion Mass, what the candidates are to wear, and what forms need to be completed, what documentation i.e. Baptism certificates need to be submitted.

From the Principal: Dear parents and carers, Welcome back to Term Two. It was a pleasure to be greeted by your children on Tuesday morning with such enthusiasm for the beginning of the new term. Thank you so much for your attention to our uniform requirements… the children looked wonderful in their maroon and navy. By sheer coincidence I had dressed in the same colours on Tuesday so I felt well and truly one with the community! We have had a few staff changes over the holidays.. Mr Joshua Dunn has resigned from his role as Family Educator and has taken on a role as a classroom teacher in another local school. He is very much missed and we are thankful for the connections he fostered between home, school and Parish. We also said goodbye to Mrs Elizabeth Woodham, a student support aide, who made the decision to have extra time at home with her family. I am thankful for the 6 years of wonderful service she gave to our school and to our students. She is also missed. This term some existing staff have taken on extra hours and responsibilities. Mrs Mandy Stewart and Mrs Jenny O’Brien have agreed to take on the role of EAL/D teachers, in addition to their existing duties, as our funding allowed for this. Increasingly our school is enriched by students and families with language backgrounds other than English and it is important that we support these children to acquire proficiency in English. Mrs Michelle Brown has also agreed to take on an additional day to work with our Learning Support students. Her focus will be on Years 1 and 2. Mrs Christine Burgess, student support aide and Mrs Jo Doulman, administration support, have both agreed to extra hours as well and I thank them for their commitment to our school. Finally we welcome back Mrs Carolyn Wait from maternity leave. Mrs Wait will job-share with Mrs Edwina Haydon on Year 2 Orange, with Mrs Haydon taking the class on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Wait on Thursday and Friday. Your children are in the very best of care with such excellent and dedicated teaching staff. Gayle Stratton

Kindergarten Blue News

It has been a wonderful start to Term 2 and K Blue have been super busy! It has been fun catching up with friends and sharing our holiday stories.

For the next three weeks in English we will be doing activities based on the book Possum Magic by Mem Fox. K Blue have been working collaboratively in groups to think about what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Once they shared their ideas, they drew pictures to represent their thinking. It was fantastic to see the children immersed in literature, taking turns, sharing, supporting each other, having fun and learning! The results were brilliant!

We are lucky to have a class pet this term to help us with our Science unit Living Things. We have a hermit crab named Luna Steve! Hermit crabs are very shy but K Blue are very gentle and respectful. We have learned that living things need food, water, shelter, oxygen and care to survive. I think Luna Steve is very lucky to have such caring friends!

I think Pablo Picasso would be very proud of K Blue if he saw how outstanding their artwork was last term! We have some very talented artists in K Blue! We looked at colour, shape, technique, position and depth and applied these skills to our artwork. I was very impressed with the gorgeous pieces they created!

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition

Last term, some of our Year 5 and 6 students entered the Australian Maths Trust Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition.

Computational thinking is a problem-solving method utilised when solving complex problems with the use of computers. Using computational thinking, can foster lateral thinking and pragmatic problem-solving.

The competition is designed to identify pre-programming potential and to encourage and inspire students who might have hidden natural ability in

computer programming.

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded a Credit:

Year 5 - Maggie Corben

Year 6 -

Jayden Skrtic Lucas Vickery Isobel Nathan Oliver Curran Patrick Frew

Phoebe Johnston

Behind the Patch

This year St Mary’s is introducing a new Bushtucker garden to the school. This garden

will contain many Indigenous herbs and plants that will be used in the canteen. It will

also provide learning opportunities for students to discover more about the Indigenous

culture.

The Bushtucker garden will be taken care of by the students that had volunteered for the

gardening club, which is run by Mr Benton our Aboriginal Education Worker, Riley Rea

and our guest, Gerald Powers. Another great addition to the garden will be new chickens

that will provide eggs for our community.

A big thank you to Mr Downey for helping clean up the garden and another thank you

to Gerald Powers for contributing in the making of the Bushtucker garden!
