Sharing Our Blessings Thank you to everyone who supports our parishes with their time, talents and financial support! May God continue to bless you for your generosity and kindness. Please pray for the financial health of our parishes and that all members will generously share the many bless-ings that God has given them with our parishes.

Fr. John’s Notes Sixteenth Sunday Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in

three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of the para-bles—the parable of the man sowing good seed. Lest we think that these parables are simply amusing little anecdotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wail-ing and grinding of teeth in a fiery furnace await those who are children of the evil one. This parable points to the struggle for today’s believer. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gos-pel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to preparing for the last days, the harvest, by blossoming as the good seeds we were created in love to be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Message from Fr. John Since March our lives have been changed in so many ways. However, we need to keep what is important and essential in our lives. Our relationship to God is most essen-tial and the Church guides and supports that relationship with God. With so many uncertainties, I hope and pray your faith and sense of belonging to the Church are a great support to you and your family as we work our way through these difficult times. Therefore, I want to communicate with every-one how our parishes are moving forward. I would like to invite everyone back to MASS. We are using every other pew in all four churches of the cluster. A family can take a whole pew and an individual or couple can have a half pew maintaining social distance. Until otherwise directed, I will be wearing a face mask for the distribution of communion and parishioners will come forward in a single line maintaining social distance. Face masks are optional. We are blessed to have four churches with ample room. I do under-stand that some individuals and family need to excuse them-selves from Mass because of their compromised health status. We are delighted that St. Charles’ redecoration is nearing completion and will be open again the weekend of July 25-26. The 4:30 p.m. Mass will be at St. Charles and the Saturday afternoon Mass rotation will resume then. We will try our best this fall to reopen our Catholic schools and have Wednesday religious education classes as scheduled. Our families need their faith and the support of the Church more than ever. We are also planning for the parish festivals at St. Mary’ and St. Charles. We are looking to have more of the events outdoors and under tents. The festival committees are working diligently to modify procedures to follow guidelines.

Let us share God’s Many

Blessings

St. John’s Summer Fest. Cancelled Due to the unique layout of St. John’s Church and Summer Fest. and the continuing presence of

COVID 19 and after much deliberation among the parish council members and Fr. John, it was decided that St. John’s Summerfest is cancelled for this year. They are aware that many people were looking for-ward to a night of fun and friendship and that it means St John’s Parish will be losing approximately $7,000 or more in income by not having the festival as compared to last year. St. John’s Parish Council asks that parishioners continue to be generous in their financial and spiritual support. St. John’s Parish Council We are seeking two individuals who would be interested in serving on St. John’s Parish Council. Please con-tact Fr. John or the parish office at 994-2526 for more infor-mation.

Reflection “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” (Matthew 13:24, 37-38) As children of God, we are all “good seeds.” We are blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we spend time in prayer every day, use our skills to help others, and share our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our example of gratitude and generosity we sow “good seeds” on earth and ultimately help each other get to Heaven! St. Mary’s Memorial Patio Project St. Mary’s Parish Council has organized the building of the Memorial Patio around the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the south side of St. Mary Church in Bloomington. Thank you to everyone who has supported this project. SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898) The convenience store owner chatted animatedly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his American clientele. So soon after 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That changed when an American customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was happily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admitted. “But we help the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Artisan of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Muslims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’s life. He died after suffering a stroke while celebrating the liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed. How lovely if after our passing, we too could be remembered for having brought very different people to the one God, together in peace. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 19, 2020

Celebrate Life

The first right of the human person is his life. He has other goods and some are more precious, but

this one is fundamental - the condition of all the others. Hence it must be protected above all others. It does not belong to society, nor does it belong to public authority in any form to recognize this right for some and not for others: all discrimina-tion is evil, whether it be founded on race, sex, color or religion. It is not recognition by another that constitutes this right. This right is antecedent to its recognition; it demands recognition and it is strictly unjust to refuse it.
