It seems especially appropriate that, as we con-clude the Thanksgiving season and begin our journey through Advent, that the next topic of prayer that the Catechism explores is the prayer of Thanksgiving (CCC 2637 & 2638). There are only two paragraphs in this heading because the need for thanksgiving to God is self-evident and, in a way, one of the primal move-ments of the human heart. So many experiences in life seem to call forth a profound sense of grat-itude spontaneously. Very often, I hear from parents after the birth of a child that they were profoundly spiritually moved during and after the birth. Clearly, God was active and their hearts were quick to gratitude and thanksgiving for this incredible gift. Importantly, the church united in thanksgiving is nowhere more joined to Christ our Head than when we gather for Mass, the celebration of the Eucharist. The word 'Eucharist" itself is from the ancient Greek for 'thanksgiving'. "Thanksgiving characterizes the prayer of the Church which, in celebrating the Eucharist, re-veals and becomes more fully what she is. In-deed, in the work of salvation, Christ sets crea-tion free from sin and death to consecrate it anew and make it return to the Father, for his glory. The thanksgiving of the members of the Body participates in that of their Head" (CCC 2637). Mass, then, is an opportunity for us to become fore fully ourselves and contribute to the Church's giving glory to the Father. Mass is cen-tral to the healthy spiritual life and gives expres-sion to the movements of the human heart. How impoverished life here below would be if we never showed gratitude; t would be a dry and selfish existence. The thanksgiving of Mass breaks us out of ourselves and unites us to the adoration and glory given to the Father in Heaven, and prepares us to join in the never end-ing hymn of praise.

Christmas Flowers in memory of loved ones. Anyone who wishes, may make a donation toward the cost of the Christmas Flowers in memory of their beloved deceased. Second Sunday of Advent December 10 ~ The prophet Isaiah instructs us: “Prepare the way of the Lord.” This is what Advent is about and yet, it can be difficult to keep this focus when we are pulled in too many directions by the shopping and cooking and card writing that go with the season. Don’t allow the tasks to prevent you from finding time to prepare your heart for Christ. Begin each day this week by making a simple prayer, “Come Lord Jesus, come!

Meet Father Cusack – Embracing his vocation, embracing God’s peopleFather Anthony Cusack grappled with his vocation as a young man. After hearing God’s call to the priesthood, he embraced a life of service to every person placed before him in ministry.

Recognizing the growing needs of ethnic communities, Father Anthony broadened his pastoral skills by learning to celebrate Mass in both Spanish and Vietnamese. This enabled him to accept his rst assignment at St. Ambrose and St. Mark Parishes in 2015.

Today, Father Anthony ministers in the heart of Dorchester. He engages the community in three very dierent languages. When summarizing his responsibilities, he describes personifying Christ: “The duty of the priest is, I think, to be Jesus to every single person he meets.”

To help ensure priests like Father Anthony receive essential care as they live out their vocation, please support the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust through the special collection this Christmas.
