TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them

through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was

once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfor-

tunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Tradition-

ally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptis-

mal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense cele-

bration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very

new point of view.

A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The

Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname

“Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo

Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti

infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized

taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The

Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold

of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo”

Dear St. Mary’s Parishioners,

At the Easter Vigil, the following individuals celebrated the

Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation: Jesus Molina Mar-

tinez, Daniel Nguyen, Long Nguyen and Laverne Aldrich. Christine

Dicker and Ray Rivera received Holy Communion for the first time and

were confirmed. Eddie Andrade, Armida Parra, Eneisabel Rios, Martin

Cota, Andres Hernandez and Victor Saucedo received the Eucharist for

the first time. And, Uriel Molina Martinez was baptized. As we give

thanks for God’s outpouring of grace upon them, we continue to prayer-

fully support them as they continue on their faith journeys. Also, I ex-

press my gratefulness to Wyman Adcock and the English RCIA For-

mation Team of Deacon Rob Vandergraaf, Sherry Vandergraaf, Myles

Meier, Clarence Lewis, Rick Isnor and Dawn Isnor. The team members

come every Tuesday evening ready to teach and share the Catholic

faith, always ready to support our RCIA faithful. Thank you to Yolanda

Bocanegra and Fr. Paolo Dorrego who oversaw our Spanish RCIA for-

mation. Thank you, also, sponsors who faithfully accompanied our

RCIA candidates throughout the year. RCIA will continue to meet from

April through August at the parish hall on second and fourth Tuesdays

at 7p for “Mystogogia” and “Inquiry”.

Thank you also to the members of our Environment Committee

who toiled to enhance our beautiful church during Lent, Holy Week and

into Easter season: Angie Caserza, Brenda Krch, Carolyn and Hugh

Bradley, Kathy and Mike Gunther, Bonnie and Jerry Munkholm, and

Carole Pitner. In addition, I express my thanks to Rocio Moreno who

decorated the “Altar of Repose” for Holy Thursday with many beautiful

and colorful flowers. I also want to thank Dayna Glenn, Peggy Boso,

Doreen Stern and Roseann Long, who make up the Altar Society, for

their faithful cleaning of the many purificators and corporals used for

Mass.

Thank you to the following parishioners who clean the holy

water fonts and put in clean holy water: Reba Cardoza, Georginia Du-

aso, Cara Sumagang, John King and Stella Fisk. Thank you Frances

Gentry for straightening up the missalettes in the pew on a regular basis.

At the end of some Sundays, it looks like a tornado went through the

church! I am grateful to sacristans Nelly Verba, Sherry Vandergraaf,

Myles Meier and Linda Molina who set up for daily and Sunday Mass-

es, and funerals. Tom and Debbi McLaughlin, Frank and Lynn Hanrat-

ty, Vicky Finnegan, Concepcion Madrid, Graciela Bibresca, Eduardo

Castro, Elizabeth Belo and Manuel Belo help to set up for the weekend

Masses.

Thank you to our music leaders Tina Benedict, Gerry Ramos,

Sylvia Madrid, Judy Lessa and Brian Senello and musicians Mila Ed-

wards, Andrew Stassen and Sheila Saromo, along with their respective

choir members who helped to make the Triduum and Easter Sunday

liturgies most beautiful. Thank you to our Lectors, Ushers and Extraor-

dinary Ministers of Holy Communion who got in a good workout over

Holy Week. Finally, I am grateful to Deacons Phil Verba, Rob Vander-

graaf and Gilberto Miranda for their help with the liturgies and to Scott

Sexton who served as Master of Ceremonies for the Triduum Masses

and to the servers who helped make everything go smoothly. Above all,

on this Divine Mercy Sunday, we thank the good Lord for his infinite

mercy and pray that He continue to pour out His mercy upon us. Happy

The FertilityCare System (CrMS) allows a woman to

unravel the mysteries of her menstrual cycle! It teaches spouses to

identify the fertile and infertile days in the woman’s cycle. The

couple then uses this information to plan or avoid a pregnancy. The

system has a 99.6% degree of effectiveness to avoid pregnancy and

a very high degree of accuracy in achieving pregnancy.

COROS de Santa Maria Les hacemos una atenta invitación a todo aquel feli-grés que le gustaría integrarse o formar parte de un coro. Se buscan vocalistas, guitarristas, pianistas, o personas que toquen algún otro instrumento. Este coro será formado para cubrir las necesidades que tiene nuestra parroquia. PARA QUE CREAS

No sucede demasiado a menudo que el autor de uno de los li-

bros de la Biblia se dirija directamente a nosotros para explicarnos

por qué está escribiendo lo que está escribiendo. En la lectura del

Evangelio de este domingo, que pertenece a la conclusión del Evan-

gelio según san Juan, el autor nos dice que ha elegido escribir estos

acontecimientos para que “crean que Jesús es el Mesías, el Hijo de

Dios, y para que, creyendo, tengan vida en su Nombre” (20:31).

La carta de san Juan retoma esta idea diciendo que: “todo el que

cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios” (5:1); lo que llamaría-

mos “nacer de nuevo”. Nuestra lectura de los Hechos de los Apósto-

les para este Segundo Domingo de Pascua nos muestra exactamente

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En tiempos pasados, cuando la Misa era en latín, no teníamos la

oportunidad de escuchar en nuestra propia lengua las bellas palabras

que Cristo pronunció durante la Última Cena y que el sacerdote

repite durante la Consagración: “Esto es mi cuerpo”. . . “Esta es mi

sangre”. Por tal razón los monaguillos sonaban unas campanitas

indicando que algo importante estaba pasando. En ese momento los

fieles levantábamos la cabeza para ver el pan convertido en cuerpo

y el vino convertido en sangre. Lamentablemente el sacerdote nos

daba la espalda y no podíamos ver lo que ocurría sobre el altar. Sin

embargo, respondíamos con las palabras del apóstol Tomás: “Señor

mío y Dios mío”.

Estas palabras reconocen y adoran la presencia de Jesús en el

pan y el vino. A este momento se le consideraba el más importante

de la Misa. No obstante, el Concilio Vaticano II vino a enseñarnos

que este es el momento cumbre, junto con toda la Plegaria Eucarís-

tica, pues toda la Misa es igualmente importante, excepto que du-

rante la Plegaria Eucarística alcanzamos el punto más alto de la

celebración. Por esa razón ya no hay campanita, pues ahora escu-

chamos todo en nuestro propio idioma, así como los discípulos las

de 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Es un programa de formación básica en la fe, ofrecido por la Dióce-

sis de Sacramento, que busca preparar adecuadamente a toda perso-

na que participe del programa, para una participación mas activa
