FAITH FORMATION CORNER

RESISTANCE. Have you ever worked out with dumb-bells? Or with “resistance bands?” Have you ever felt the struggle of willing your mind to push through an exer-cise, with your mind telling you, or better yet, screaming at you to let go, but the desire to achieve your workout goal also screams at you to keep holding on? All the while, you are trying to keep the physical form of the exercise intact and strong? This reminds me of the work-ing out of Faith. Where we try so hard to will ourselves to go to Mass, to say the Rosary, to attend Holy Days of

Obligation, to engage in the year around liturgical cele-brations of our Catholic Faith. So “resistance” is that moment where we take a deep breath, and with narrow, concentrated focus, push through the difficulty to a sense of relief usually experienced as freedom.

In my work as a Marriage, Family Therapist, I am often met with emotional or mental resistance. This type of resistance occurs when a client may be experiencing dif-ficulty with facing an issue that may be the cause of his/her problems. It is crucial that a client experience their time in session as a safe haven because without this safe-ty, the human psyche can create many types of defense mechanisms to cope with a multitude of thoughts and feelings. Such defense mechanisms give rise to re-sistance, which can thwart the emotional progress of the client. This type of resistance, as opposed to the re-sistance in exercising, can become chronic, or put nicely, can become a way of life. However, when we continual-ly resist the truth within and outside ourselves, we can set ourselves up to meet all truth with resistance.

This brings forth a question. What is it that as a human entity, we can be easily influenced by our education, our peers, social media, TV news, celebrity opinions, the government, and yet we completely resist the truth of God? I coin this notion, “Spiritual Resistance.”

I am not sure about you, but I must admit I am not above this type of resistance myself. I love attending Mass, but I don’t always want to go, and to be completely frank, I can do a major head trip in finding many reasons no to go. To make matters worse, I can even justify it, using the Lord’s mercy and understanding for my gain. Imag-ine that. While I am not proud of it, I don’t think I am alone. I see a great deal of people, not necessarily my clients who also continually resist the truth. It is so easy to resist the truth about our lives, to resist the truth about our strengths and our weaknesses; we resist engaging in more healthy decisions for ourselves and our loved ones because we get tired, or we feel helpless, or hopeless, or unsure, or we worry about what our friends might think about us, or a million other reasons.

However, I believe the most likely answer may be that we truly believe we know better. As I journey forward in my faith, I find I have been very resistant throughout my life. It has taken me a long time to come to this desert of

human dryness, where I have come face to face with the reality of my limitedness, of my weaknesses, of my re-sistance to truly believe every word the Lord proclaims

in Scriptures, all in the name of finding truth. And yet, the Truth stands, ready for me, for you, for us, to let down our “Spiritual Resistance,” as prodigals only to be

met with the only Truth that matters, the Love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. What about you? Where do you tend to “Spiritually Resist?” Whatever you find, may you also

find the Lord’s peace, mercy, and love waiting for you with open arms. Blessings, Roz

Third Sunday of Lent “You shall not covet”is perhaps a diffcult commandmentto keep in our consumer-oriented society. But as

Christian stewards, we know that we are the recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts. May this understan-ding that all is gift help us be less resentful of the gifts of others.”

“No codiciaras” es quizás un mandamiento difícil de cumplir en nuestra sociedad de consumo. Pero, como ad-

ministradores Cristianos, nosotros sabemos que somos los receptores y guardianes de los muchos regalos de

Dios. Que esteentendimiento de que todo es un regalo nos ayude a resentirnos menos de los regalos de los de-más.

Gospel Reflection:.John 2:13-25 Jesus drives out the moneychangers from the Temple and says that he will destroy the temple and raise it up again. In today’s Gospel we read about how Jesus overturned the tables of the merchants and the moneychangers in the Temple at Jerusalem. In order to understand the relevance of Jesus’ action, we must learn more about the activities that were going on in the temple area. Worship at the Temple in Jerusalem included animal sacri-fice, and merchants sold animals to worshipers. Moneychangers ex-changed Roman coins, which bore the image of the Roman emperor, for the temple coins that were needed to pay the temple tax.

Jesus’ action at the Temple in Jerusa-lem is recorded in all four Gospels and is often understood to be among the events that led to Jesus’ arrest and Crucifixion. The Gospel of John, however, places this event much ear-lier in Jesus’ public ministry than do the Synoptic Gospels. In John’s Gos-pel this event occurs at the very be-ginning of Jesus’ ministry, after his first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana.

We must read the Gospel of John carefully, especially in its presenta-tion of Jesus’ relationship to Juda-ism. The Gospel of John tends to re-flect greater tension and animosity between Jesus and the Jewish author-ities than the Synoptic Gospels. The

Gospel of John was the last of the four Gospels to be written, and its narrative reflects the growing divide between the Jewish community and the early Christian community. Thus, greater emphasis on the distinction between Christianity and Judaism is found in John’s Gospel. Reflecting upon the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem (A.D. 70), John recalls Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple and uses that story to inter-pret this later event. John explains to his audience, an early Christian com-munity, that temple worship would no longer be necessary because it was surpassed in the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus. With greater frequency than the other Evangelists, John intersperses post-Resurrection reflections of this Christian community in his narrative.

After clearing the Temple of the merchants and the moneychangers, John’s Gospel tells us that the people asked for a sign of Jesus’ authority to do such an audacious act. In re-sponse, Jesus predicted his death and Resurrection. Throughout John’s Gospel, the language of signs is dis-tinctive. Jesus’ miracles are called signs, and the people look to these signs for proof of his authority. Here we learn that the sign par excellence will be Jesus’ passion, death, and Resurrection.

During Lent we reflect upon the meaning of this sign for us and for our world. We might take this oppor-

tunity to consider the quality of our prayer and worship. In our prayers we seek to deepen our relationship with the person of Christ. In our wor-ship with the community, we gather to experience anew the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus and its significance in our lives. Christ promises to be present with us when we gather for prayer. Family Connection: Today’s Gospel invites us to reflect upon our worship of God. For Jesus and his Jewish contemporaries, the Temple was an important, holy place where they gathered to worship God. The Christian understanding of wor-ship was transformed in light of Je-sus’ Resurrection. In the Christian understanding, God is worshiped in a person, the person of Jesus Christ. As we read in today’s Gospel, Jesus is himself the Temple that will be destroyed, but in three days God will raise him up again.

As you gather as a family, talk about places and times when you have ex-perienced God’s presence. After his Resurrection, Jesus’ disciples under-stood that Jesus was present with them as they gathered to pray and especially when they gathered to share a meal. Read together today’s Gospel, John 2:13-25. Jesus teaches us in today’s Gospel that he is God’s presence with us. Thank God for Je-sus’ presence with us, especially in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
