For the season, St. Norbert has 29 assists on 43 made buckets.

A Grand GoalSenior guard David Wipperfurth currently sits with

791 career points. Wipperfurth needs 209 points to give him 1,000 for his career. If Wipperfurth reaches 1,000 points this season, he would become the 25th player in St. Norbert history to reach that feat.

Moving on UpWith a win against Elmhurst, St. Norbert head coach

Gary Grzesk will move into fourth place on the St. Nor-bert College men’s basketball all-time wins list. Cur-rently at 66-33 overall, Grzesk is tied with Mike Heide-man for fourth-place.

Grzesk’s 66-33 record is good for a 66.7 winning per-centage, placing him third all-time among St. Norbert coaches.

Building a WinnerIn four seasons, head coach Gary Grzesk placed the

St. Norbert men’s basketball program onto the national Division III scene.

St. Norbert’s 23 wins a season ago set a school re-cord. It marks just the third time in school history it won at least 20 games in a season. The Green Knights won 21 games twice (1984 and 2002).

St. Norbert’s 43-10 record the last two-plus seasons marks the best two-year win total in men’s basketball history. The Green Knights were 37-10 in Mike Heide-man’s first years at the helm in 1983 and 1984.

Since starting the 2007-08 season 2-5, St. Norbert is

a solid 55-15. St. Norbert reached its highest national ranking in the 11-year history of the D3hoops.com Top 25 with a No. 9 ranking the week of Feb. 1, 2010.

HEAD COACH - Fifth Season (66-33 Overall)

Gary Grzesk will be in his fifth season as St. Norbert College’s men’s basketball coach in 2010-11.

St. Norbert is 64-33 in four years under Grzesk’s supervision. Grzesk piloted the Green Knights to a 23-4 record, setting a school record for wins. St. Norbert advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, its first national post-season win in 26 years. The Green Knights won the Midwest Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and were ranked as high as No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25.

The 2008-09 season was also a highly successful season for the Green Knights, who finished 18-6 overall and 12-4 in the Midwest Conference. St. Norbert rose to as high as No. 11 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 and also topped No. 1-ranked UW-Platteville in the championship game of the Nicolet Bank Holiday Classic, the first win over a No. 1 foe for any sport in St. Norbert history.

In three seasons at Lakeland from 2004 to 2006, Grzesk compiled a 51-31 record. The Muskies won the Lake Michi-gan Conference championship in 2006 and also captured the LMC Tournament title in 2004. Lakeland also appeared in the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Grzesk spent the 2002-03 season as an assistant at UW-Green Bay, his alma mater. Prior to returning to Green Bay, Grzesk was an assistant at Youngstown State (Ohio) Univer-sity for six seasons from 1996-97 to 2001-02. Grzesk was an aide during Youngstown State’s first 20-win season as a Divi-sion I member when the Penguins went 20-9 in 1997-98.

A 1996 graduate of UW-Green Bay, Grzesk was a four-year letterwinner for the Phoenix. He earned the team’s Defensive Player of the Year award four times, helping Green Bay to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Grzesk is perhaps best known for guarding NBA lottery pick Jason Kidd in a 61-57 NCAA Tournament first-round win over California in 1994. Grzesk, who started in 107 of the 120 collegiate games he played in, was Green Bay’s captain his junior and senior seasons. He concluded his career with 450 points and 496 assists. The Phoenix was 74-19 in Grzesk’s final three seasons.

Grzesk, a Wauwatosa native, is married to the former Liz Hauger, herself a former college basketball coach at Youngstown State and UW-Green Bay. The couple has a son, Garrett, and a daughter, Gracie.
