DISCIPLESHIP Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Mt.16:24. This is the manual for discipleship in Jesus’ own words. I would like to reflect on the first criteria, that is denying oneself. Jesus identifies a distinction between two ways of understanding ourselves. There is the SELF which is God’s vision for us and the self which the world’s understanding of us. The way to activate the SELF is to lose the self because He says in Mat. 16: 25, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it”. If so, what does it mean? We read in the bible “Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness” — “God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them”. -Gen. 1: 26a, 27. There is one Life in every human being. There is no difference in the LIFE between a newborn child and 110-year-old person, a billionaire and a beggar, an able bodied and a disabled, a hero and a criminal. Life is one and the same in all human beings from conception to death, no matter how different we may appear in our looks and abilities. One Heavenly Father appears in different forms in each of us; to give an imagery; each of us are like a drop in the ocean. This is the SELF. When we become conscious of SELF, our common oneness in the Father, there is no place for greed, lust, injustice, inequality, weapon and war and division based on man-made mess, which are contrary to the Kingdom of God. Unfortunately, we distort the SELF into something less than God intended and this is the self Jesus asks us to lose. Through our sin and brokenness we add on a lot of messy stuff to who God made us to be. We measure ourselves differently than God does, when we focus on physical structure and looks, sex, talents, social status, wealth, health, etc. Competition arises to look better, gain wealth, power, name, fame and all this leads to inequality and injustice. Therefore Jesus expressing the purpose and mission of His life, offered prayer to OUR HEAVENLY FATHR before His death saying, “Father, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me”. Jn.17.21. Our discipleship is only possible when we are able lose self and nurture SELF. It takes a lot of conscious effort, prayer, silent reflection, continuous self-correction, simple way of life and commitment to Jesus and His Kingdom. Therefore, Jesus said, “not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven”. Mt. 7: 21. Discipleship is a way of life not a membership.
Have a blessed week, Fr. S. Arul Amalraj, O. Praem

PREP News Maintenance Projects We have two maintenance projects that will be starting in the coming weeks which will make the campus safer and more accessible to those with disabilities.
North Wall of Parish Center
The north wall of the Parish Center has experienced water damage and needs to be sealed. You may have notice the machinery beside the school digging out a trench along the wall. The trench will allow access for sealing the wall and regrading for better drainage away from the school.
Church Steps
For sometime now the front porch and steps of the Church have been deteriorating. Starting in September the porch at the Main Entrance will be demolished and rebuilt. The new porch will include an ADA compliant ramp, better traction, lighting upgrades. For those who need a ramp there will be a temporary ramp installed in the back doors to the sanctuary adjacent to the rear driveway by the cemetery.
With the current situation of social distancing and isolation it is more important than ever to stay connected to your parish family. Sign up to receive our weekly parish news via email along with updates and invitations to online activities that we’ll be offering in place of in person gatherings. Text the keyword “saintpats” to 84576 and receive all our latest announcements.
