Gift Of Stewardship

Get out of your Comfort Zone! Part Two

The mission is marked, at every turn, by danger. Bilbo and the dwarves confront hungry trolls, fierce orcs, wicked goblins, ferocious wolves, giant spiders, and eventually the mighty fire-breathing dragon himself. These fanciful characters signal the fact of serious evil at work in the world. Tolkien was a participant in the trench warfare of the First World War and thus experi-enced, at first hand, cruelty, violence, injustice, depravity, and mind-numbing fear. His Christian faith gave him the conviction that all of this evil was the result of sin, at both the human and super-human level. It also helped him to see that the whole point of life was to enter into the lists against evil, to find one's unique calling to battle wickedness and hence bring the world more into conformity with the reign of God.

What is particularly instructive in The Hobbit is the manner in which a Christian knight properly engages in the battle. At a key moment in the story, Gandalf suggests that while many think darkness is best opposed through exercises of great worldly pow-er, in point of fact, it is most effectively countered through simple acts of kindness. This is, of course, nothing but Jesus' still deeply challenging teaching in the Sermon on the Mount that evil is properly resisted through love, non-violence, and forgiveness. The most striking example of this principle in action is Bilbo's refusal to kill the loathsome and dangerous Gollum when he has the chance. As readers of The Lord of the Rings know, Gollum would, despite himself, play the decisive role in the destruction of the ring. Had Bilbo indulged his violent instincts and put Gollum to death, the day would not have been saved. That evil is best engaged through pity is a deeply Christian and profoundly coun-ter-intuitive insight.

At the climax of The Hobbit, the adventurers come face to face with Smaug, the dragon who, deep in the bowels of a great moun-tain, guards a pile of treasure absconded from the dwarves many years before. The beast knows every little bit of his horde: each coin, each goblet, each jewel and precious stone. To be sure, he cannot possibly use or benefit from any of it, but he wallows in it and protects it with his life. Tolkien refers to this weird obsession as "the dragon sickness," and he implies that it bedevils many people in contemporary society, those who know the value of everything and the worth of nothing. The Hobbit is a narrative spun by a serious Catholic who wants to communicate the still surprising ethics of the Gospel.

As a parish community, we express gratitude for the following memorials and ask God to bless

their families with comfort and peace.

BIRTHDAY WISHES Happy Birthday to Marion Hessen on Feb. 4,

and to Herbert Horn on Feb. 14.

Best Wishes to all who are celebrating this week!!

Joy! Generosity! Gratitude!

Remember your baby shower? How happy and joyous this time was. But, if you are poor and family ties are weak or strained, there won’t be a baby shower.

Through your generosity, Heavenly Babies Group is able to fulfill its mission by giving new moms a good start to the new journey ahead of them. We provide them with a “Baby Shower in a Bag”, which includes onesies, sleepers, blankets, jacket/sweater, a hat, socks, bib, an outfit for the season, a book and a stuffed animal. It is important to encourage mental and physical stimulation and care.

Heavenly Babies Group assembles 32–40 bags per month that are distributed to agencies in Milwaukee and Waukesha that have pro-grams to assist women through their pregnancy and will teach and encourage good parenting skills. Our purpose is to lift the spirits of these struggling moms. Our gifts are accepted with joy and gratitude. Please remember to watch for clearance sales, use your Kohl’s Cash, and help Heavenly Babies Group with stocking up for 2019.

Email Jennifer Aldrich, [email protected], or call 262.201.4362 evening or weekends if you have questions.

Help Wanted – SMALL things done with GREAT love change the world

The Faith Formation team (supporting children to families to high schoolers and yes, adults, too!) is in the business of changing lives – yours, mine, all of ours! We are all in the business of help-ing each other grow from sinners to saints. We need people to RISE UP and join the Faith Formation Committee, a collaborative effort between St Bruno and St Paul. We meet once per month on the first Monday of the month from 6:30-8pm. As a committee member, you would be asked to share your opinion of faith for-mation for all ages of our parish. You’ll hear about what’s coming soon in the areas of Child and Family Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Adult Ministry. We talk about our hopes and dreams for these areas, some of our struggles, as well as our successes. We also spend a portion of the meeting looking at an article or part of a new book that we want to share to keep us all informed of what is happening in other parishes or best practices. Input from parishioners, whether you have children in the Faith Formation programs or not, is important for all of us since faith formation is LIFELONG.

Please contact any one of us on the Faith Formation team to learn more:

Get connected to our POWER!

As we move further into February I can’t help but think about all of the snow and cold we had to finish the month of January. It went so fast and before I knew it we were switching the calendar into a new month. It’s during these fast and busy times that I am reminded to slow down. February is the perfect month to do exactly

that. The holidays are fully completed, the snow and the cold have passed, and the excitement of Catholic Schools Week has subsided.

I hope you can all find the time to slow down this month and reflect on the beauty of God’s creations around us. I love sitting in my living room, snuggled in a blanket, watching a movie while looking at the beauty of the snow. February brings Valentine’s Day, Random Acts of Kindness Day and Presidents Day. Let’s make it a point to reach out to those around us and share why we love one another. If we could all show more random acts of kindness, this world would be a better place. I encourage you to share random acts of kindness with others not only on “Random Acts of Kindness Day,” but always.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE DAY

Student experience day is Wednesday, February 20th! It is an oppor-tunity for students who don’t attend St. Paul Catholic School to expe-rience what it’s like to be a student at St. Paul for a day. All current K3-8th grade students are welcome; guests are required to complete a permission slip with emergency contact information and indicate who will be providing transportation. Please spread the word and consider bringing a friend with you to school that day! Permission slips can be found in the school office or attached to our “Event” on Facebook.

AFTER CARE HELP NEEDED

We are desperately looking for someone to help with the PM After School Care shifts Monday-Thursday starting in March. This person must be 18 or older and preferably someone who can work the same day(s) each week. This is a paid position and a great opportunity to get to know the students here at St. Paul. Hours will run from 3:15 PM-6:00 PM, ending time may vary. If this is a position you would be interested in, even if it’s just one day a week, please contact us at: [email protected].

Make sure you check our school website under “Upcoming Events” for our next Ski Club date, an opportunity to join St. Paul School in a marathon (or shorter if you prefer) and the Catholic Youth Rally.
