LSILSI’s Host Homes Program

Each year, Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) empowers hundreds of Iowans with disabilities. And despite the COVID-19 pandemic, this year is no different. There is no greater joy for us than seeing an individual develop greater independence, find their confidence, and thrive. And through our innovative Host Homes program, LSI has found a new way to lift up our Iowa neighbors and keep them safe in times of crisis.

Through the program, adults with disabilities (or “mentees”) move from a supported community living setting – like a 24-hour, fully staffed home with roommates – and into a private family home with a Host Homes “mentor.” LSI collaborates with the individuals we serve and the contracted mentors to ensure each match is the perfect fit and create a shared living opportunity that is beneficial to mentors and mentees. With the extra safety precautions associated with COVID-19, this program is a safe option where participants are in a home setting, interacting with one trusted mentor instead of several staff members.

LSI is seeking compassionate and dedicated caregivers to join us in the mission. If you have room in your heart and in your home, being a Host Homes mentor might be for you! Visit LSIowa.org/HostHomes to learn more. If you are interested in supporting crucial programming like LSI’s Services for People with Disabilities, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at 563-676-2065 or [email protected].

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Country Time 2020 The WELCA Board has decided to NOT have our annual Country Time fundraiser fall dinner this year due to the COVID-19 virus issues. We usually start our planning for Country Time in June. Theres months of planning and expense in purchasing items ahead of time that goes into the Country Time event. We dont know what will be happening in the fall with the Virus issues. We feel it is better to make the decision to cancel now, rather than have many hours of planning completed and then have to cancel in September. We hope to again have Country Time in September 2021 and we will look forward to all of you helping out with the food, fun and fellowship that we as a congregation come together and work together to minister to our church and community.

“God’s Big Backyard” Virtual VBS coming July 13th-17th

Reminder that our summer VBS program will look a little different this year. Instead of gathering in our church buildings, we’ll be offering a combination of online videos and take-home packets. The videos will include music and the daily Bible story and the packets will provide students with the supplies and directions to complete craft projects and other fun themed activities from home. Despite the necessary changes and the fact that we will greatly miss not being able to gather together, we are still excited for an awesome week! The theme for this year’s program is “God’s Big Backyard”. We’ll be learning about what it means to all live together in the big, beautiful world God created and how to worship and share God’s love with our neighbors, even when we’re not together.

If your family registered for VBS you will be receiving more information about how to access the online videos as well as when and where to pick up your take-home packets. If you are not participating directly, you can still help by holding all of the students and leaders in prayer during this week as we navigate how to make this great ministry event happen despite the pandemic. If you have any questions about VBS please contact Christin Flucke at (641) 257-9793 or [email protected].

All high schoolers are invited to join us for some outdoor fun and fellowship together on Saturday, July 18th. We’ll meet at church at 10:00 am and carpool to Osage to enjoy a leisurely hike along the Harry Cook Nature Trail (approx. 2 miles) Then, we’ll stop and eat lunch together at the park before hiking the trail back again to where we started. Lunch will be provided. Please let Christin know if you plan to attend by Sunday, July 12th. We have greatly missed seeing all of you this spring so we look forward to the chance to spend some time together!
