ELCA commitment to confronting racism and anti-Semitism

Posted on elca.org on 8/15/2017 3:00:00 PM

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), stands

against all forms of hatred and discrimination. The church believes

that cultural, ethnic and racial differences should be seen and

celebrated as what God intends them to be—blessings rather than

means of oppression and discrimination.

The ELCA’s social statement “Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity and

Culture” states: “Racism—a mix of power, privilege, and

prejudice—is sin, a violation of God’s intention for humanity. The

resulting racial, ethnic, or cultural barriers deny the truth that all

people are God’s creatures and, therefore, persons of dignity.

Racism fractures and fragments both church and society.”

The social statement, adopted by the ELCA 1993 Churchwide

Assembly, calls on the church to make confession for complicity,

name the spiritual crisis at the roots, commit to change and make

pledges to public witness, advocacy and action to confront racism.

“We recognize that the kind of violence we witnessed in

Charlottesville last weekend is very real and affects all of us,” said

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton. “We need to stand up

firmly against racism and anti-Semitism, show up for and advocate

with others. Jesus, who makes visible those who are invisible, is

already there. We need to show up, and we need to listen in each of

our communities.”

The ELCA is a church that belongs to Christ and Christ’s church

universal, where there is a place for everyone. The job of Christ’s

people today is to celebrate the diversity of God’s creative work and

embrace all people in the spirit of love,

whatever race or ethnicity, economic status or

gender.

Summer Picnic and Outdoor Worship Wow! What a great day! Worship was fantastic - we even had

a baptism! Thanks to the Worship Team and everyone who

helped make the service happen! The picnic - so much food!

Yummy! And so much fun! The St. Peter Bingo game got folks

out and talking to new people and finding out new things

about the people they already know! Thanks from the Shalom

Team to everyone who came out to enjoy the day at Cleveland

Park! Watch the Shalom bulletin board in the Fellowship

Hallway for pictures of the day - or check out Facebook,

pictures are already there - see who took on the piñatas!

Are you ready to Rock?!?!?! Shalom has tickets to see the Broadway musical School of

Rock! We've got 20 tickets - first come, first serve. We will

then have a waiting list and will try to get additional tickets.

When: Saturday 11/25/2017 - 2pm

Where: Marcus Center in Milwaukee

Cost: $59/ticket - due upon sign up

The attendees can discuss car pooling as we get closer.

Based on the film and with a rocking new score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, School of

Rock follows slacker Dewey Finn as he turns a class of straight – A students into an ear-

popping, riff-scorching, all-conquering rock band! As they prepare for the Battle of the Bands,

can Dewey make them embrace the empowering message of rock?

Rally Sunday - Job Fair Once again Shalom will host a Job Fair on Rally Sunday (September 10th) to give all teams

the chance to tell the congregation what they do, answer questions, and accept new members!

Join us in the Fellowship hall, enjoy coffee fellowship and see what St. Peter has to offer.

Sponsor letters were delivered to Pastor Rafael at the end of July

by the St. Matthew’s delegation.

After 17 years of partnership with Apostles of Christ, we continue

to learn from each other and value our growing relationship and

understanding of each other as children of God living in different

cultural contexts.

Planning continues for the St. Peter delegation visit November 9 to the 16. The itinerary

includes time with our sister parish - gathering at the church for devotions, worship, and

fellowship; visits to family homes, conversations with scholarship students, updates on

vocational classes, meeting with the pastoral leadership council, and a fieldtrip with the

Apostles families to a special place (last year it was an overnight at the ocean). The

delegation will have time to visit and meet with Bishop Gomez and other pastors and

congregations of the Lutheran Church of El Salvador as well as visits to historic sites and

cultural experiences. We will travel as a group and Pastor Rafael and other members of

the community will be with us, along with translators.

There is still time for you to join the delegation - please contact Carol Witt for more

information and any questions you may have.

There is a good possibility that Pastor Rafael will be traveling to be with us at the end of

September and be at St. Peter Sunday, October 1st. More will be communicated when

more details are known.

A huge thanks to all the people of St. Peter who continue to support this global ministry.

You are invited to learn more about this ministry by attending team meetings and

participating in team activities. Come visit the El Salvador display at the Job Fair, Sunday

September 10th.

The Church Council wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past 3 years of service that

Janet Blank gave to our congregation. She forged her way in a new position and took on the

many challenges that our congregation gave her. Most notably was her revival of the Sunday

School program - with its creative and innovative way of teaching. It brought the children,

youth, and adults together on Sunday mornings to teach and inspire the young minds in our

congregation. Janet also spearheaded the community gardens. She saw the vacant lot and when

others may have seen just grass, she envisioned a neighborhood garden. It is in its second year

and the plants are thriving! On many occasions she pitched in and helped where there was a

need. She took it upon herself to be a regular at St. Pete’s Cafe, a ministry she found much joy in

serving. Janet gave much of herself while working for our church and she will be missed.

You may be asking yourself - what will happen with this position? To that the council

says we are working on it. We are taking a moment to reflect on the position before deciding the

next step. We ask for your prayers, not only for Janet and her new path, but also for the council

as we plan for the future of this position.

Thank you for your support and prayers!

To the members of St. Peter,

I would like to say thank you to all of

the church members of St. Peter who

have been going to Dione’s Polka Dot

Dress party for the past ten years.

The Polka Dot Dress party has supported Project Angel

Hugs in Plymouth since its beginning. It is sad to say

that this was the last party, but I hope everyone will

have great times to remember through the years. Over

all of the years, we have raised a total of $33,374.00 for

Project Angel Hugs plus all of the gift donations to the

children they support whose lives have been impacted by

childhood cancer. Thank you for making a difference. So

thanks again from Dione’s mom, ~ Shirley Robek

This July I had the privilege of attending "All Anew": the tenth triennial convention and

gathering of the Women of the ELCA as a delegate/voting member from the Greater

Milwaukee Synodical Organization of Women of the ELCA. I have been involved with the

synodical board of Women of the ELCA for most of the last twenty years. Last October, at

the annual convention I was elected to attend the triennial convention as one of Greater

Milwaukee's four voting members.

The triennial convention which was held in Minneapolis, MN was inspiring. We began with

an uplifting worship service and Holy Communion and also a bible study. The first three

days were involved with doing the business of Women of the ELCA. We voted for the offices

of president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer as well as 17 board members. There

were no prior nominations for the offices of president and vice-president. Those offices were

elected by ecclesiastical ballot, meaning that everyone was given a paper ballot and could

put anyone's name on it. It took several ballots before there was a clear winner. I was

pleased that we elected for president, a woman who lives in the Western North Dakota

synod who is in her fifties.

We also voted on several memorials. One was regarding the water crisis in Flint, MI. Our

own synodical unit, with the help of St. Peter and other congregations was able to send over

$2,200 dollars to help with the crisis. Another memorial was with regard to domestic abuse

and violence. This has been a focus of our synodical unit for many years as one of our

members was killed by her husband. It is an ongoing problem for women.

After the business meetings were finished we prepared for the Gathering. It began with a

beautiful worship service and Holy Communion. Imagine over 3,000 women in one place

singing and praising God. It was wonderful. The next days were filled with bible study,

workshops, servant events, and, of course, a closing worship. Bible studies centered on

social issues, such as immigration, human trafficking, and racism.

I spent my servant event time working on a serger making the liners for the Days for Girls

project. The women and girls in El Salvador miss school and work when they have their

menstrual cycle. The Days for Girls project makes fabric feminine hygiene kits that the

women and girls can use over and over. The kits give them the ability to continue in school

and work. Just think about the number of school days and work days that girls and women

would have to miss if they weren't able to have feminine hygiene products. This is a

wonderful project and I was able to help

teach others how to use a serger and how

easy it is to make these liners.

The convention and gathering were amazing

and I came home tired, but ready to be an

advocate for others.
