Dear Fr. Gem: I hear a priest sai in his homil one Suna

morning that there shoul "e total silence in the #esti"ule of the

Church "efore an after $ass. A goo num"er of our church goers

were raising their ee"rows. Can ou e%plain the liturgical rele#ance

of the &#esti"ule& at our church'

An#e!i,  Parishioner

Der An#e!in" 2 am supposing that by vestibule you refer to thenarthex, Igathering space or porch at the entrance of the church andseparated from the body of the church by a wall, railing or screen. /ell,the vestibule acts as a buffer @one separating the secular life fromcontact with God.

2n some places in ancient times this space was sometimes calledKparadysusK and was fre8uently decorated with images of 3dam and=ve in the Garden of =den or painted with evergreens symboli@ingeternal happiness. 2t was used for several purposes. ?ne was forcatechumens and penitents who were not allowed into the church properand who had to leave before the prayers of the faithful. 2n this case thenarthex usually consisted of a screen or low wall that still permittedhearing the -iturgy of the /ord and the sermon.

2t was also used as a gathering space for those in procession4 as a place of Ludgment and other civil purposes4 and later as a place of burial.

?ver time, this space was continually reduced. The first to go wasthe outside portico which formed an ample barrier between the streetand the sacred space. 3round the year !''' it was transformed into thegreat west porch found in early Gothic churches. -ittle by little the

ancient vestibule was often reduced to a simple narrow space betweenthe main doors and the church proper and used primarily as a windbreaand a notice board.

The restoration of a proper gathering space in some modernchurches can be of great benefit, especially in cutting out moreeffectively the noise of urban traffic and promoting an ambience ofspiritual recollection that can benefit all.

2n modern churches it can also serve other practical purposes asillustrated by the .S. bishopsN document KDuilt of -iving Stones: TheGathering Space or 5arthex

KO+. The narthex is a place of welcome "" a threshold space between the congregationNs space and the outside environment. 2n theearly days of the 6hurch, it was a Nwaiting areaN for catechumens and

penitents. Today it serves as gathering space as well as the entrance andexit to the building. The gathering space helps believers to mae the

transition from everyday life to the celebration of the liturgy, and afterthe liturgy, it helps them return to daily life to live out the mystery thathas been celebrated. 2n the gathering space, people come together tomove in procession and to prepare for the celebration of the liturgy.

2t is in the vestibule or narthex that many important liturgicalmoments occur: men and women participate in the Bite of Decoming a6atechumen as they move towards later, full initiation into the 6hurch4

parents, godparents, and infants are greeted for the celebration of baptism4 and 6hristians are greeted for the last time as their mortalremains are received into the church building for the celebration of thefuneral rites.

KO+*. 2n addition to its religious functions, the gathering space may provide access to the vesting sacristy, rooms for choir rehearsal, storageareas, restrooms, and rooms for ushers and their e8uipment.K

3s you can see, it is almost impossible to observe total silence inthe gathering space or vestibule before or after Mass.

?ther things being e8ual, one of the first things one associates thechurch building with is prayerP 3nd thus, one rightly expects thechurch building to be a place that in fact does  encourage and foster

prayer. H&ever, %+ere re )i**eren% %.es &* r.er. There is public, liturgical prayer, and there is private devotional prayer.
