Father in Heaven, the light of your truth bestows sight
to the darkness of sinful eyes. May this season of repentance

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Child-friendly School. St Philomena’s is A Child-Safe Child-Friendly
School.
Child-safe means taking active measures to keep
children and young people safe from physical, sexual
or emotional abuse.
Child-friendly means creating a trusting environment
that values, respect and welcome children and young
people. This means children and young people feel
confident to raise any problem or concern and know
they will be listened to. If you are aware of a family experiencing difficulty please
approach the School Executive (Principal, Assistant
Principal, REC, Parish Priest) or email this address:
This morning our school community gathered together
with Fr Owen for our Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash
Wednesday begins the Church Season of Lent in the
liturgical calendar. Lent is a time of fasting and prayer
and a time when we prepare ourselves for Easter.
Ash Wednesday takes place 40 days before Easter
Week. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish
tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes
the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes are a
symbol of the dust from which God made us. As the
priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he
speaks the words: "Turn away from sin and be faithful
to the Gospel"
Our 26 Kindergarten have settled into our school
community with ease and Mrs Bray and Mr Parslow
are enjoying each day watching the children develop
friendships and an understanding of the schools
routines. We also welcome the following children
who have come to St Phil’s this year: Ruby Challitta,
Hollie Malone, Annabel & Harriet Dowd, Deekin
Keogh, Jaxon Hyde and Jesse Limon.

School Fees Term 1 school fee accounts have been sent home to all
families on Monday. Accompanying the account was
an important letter outlining CEO School Fee
Agreement and our 2016 Fee Schedule. I urge all
parents to return their School Fee Agreement Form by
this Friday 12th February so processes may be
implemented. School Fee’s for Term One are due on
19th February, unless payment plans have been put in
place.
BPAY is still the preferred method of
payment for school fees. Your biller code
and reference no. is located on the top right
hand side of your invoice/statement.
Project Compassion The theme for Project Compassion 2016 is “Learning
more, creating change”.
As Pope Francis says “Education is an act of hope”, so
this year Project Compassion celebrates the power of
learning, and the many ways in which Caritas
Australia is working with local partners around the
world to provide vital learning and renewed hope to
children, women and men most vulnerable to extreme
poverty and injustice.
Throughout Project Compassion 2016, inspiring stories
from Malawi, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Australia,
Cambodia and India will show how education, training
and sharing knowledge can empower individual
communities to transform their futures and create
lasting change.
Together we can empower the world’s poorest
people with the opportunity to learn, grow and
create change." Bishop Greg O’Kelly
Project Compassion, Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten
appeal, is an opportunity to open our hearts with love
and hope to the needs in our world and enables us to
open our hands to share what we have with those who
lack basic human rights – food,
water, shelter, healthcare and
education. Today each family will
take home a Project Compassion box.
We encourage everyone during this
time of Lent to think of those in need
and give generously.
School Parish Mass Our Parish Mass is being held on Sunday 6

Shrove Tuesday - Mini Vinnies
Yesterday St Phil’s celebrated Shrove
Tuesday. It was a great day and we raised $170, for
Project Compassion. A big thanks to Mrs Smith, Mrs
Murdoch, Year 5 & 1 students for organising the day
and cooking the pancakes. They were delicious and
everyone was full and happy by the end of lunch.

WHAT IS MINI VINNIES?
Mini Vinnies is a group of children in a primary school
who get together to help the needy within their school
and local community. It gives the children insight
into the workings of and history of St Vincent de Paul
Society, allows them to discuss social justice issues
and helps them put what they learn about Religion into
practice.
‘See, Think, Do’ is the learning model used by Mini
Vinnies:
'See' involves making members of the group
aware of some of the social ills in the
community and helps them to develop
empathy for the poor and marginalised.
'Think' involves group participation in
spiritual activities and discussions so that
they will come to understand some of the
causes of social problems in the world and
how these problems might be alleviated.
‘Do' involves support of our Society in its
good works by community service and
fundraising.
Scholastic Bookfair – will be held on Tuesday 8th
March from 8.30am in the school library! All
children will preview books on Monday 7th March
during library lessons. This is not a ‘dress up’ Book
Fair as the children will be able to dress up as their
favourite book character during book week in August.

Professional Development – Dibeels Testing on
Ipads.
On Tuesday Mrs Di Dwyer, Mrs Sharon McHugh-
Osborne, Mrs Kate Simm, Mrs Sharon Weber and I
went to Holy Family for training on how to implement
our DIBELS (oral reading assessments) on the Ipads as
opposed to pen and paper. Mrs Lynda Rossitt and her
Support Team were fantastic facilitators and we found
it to be an extremely useful experience. Our hope is
that the tests on Ipads will be more efficiently
conducted and at less expense to our environment.
I would like to thank Holy Family for their friendly
assistance and we enjoy being part of this professional
learning community.

Swimming Carnival
On Monday, 1st February we held our annual
Swimming Carnival at the Bathurst Aquatic Centre.
Although a little chilly, the day was a very successful
day with every student displaying great sportsmanship
and support for their team. The day had more of an
emphasis on participation rather than results and on
team support rather than individual performances,
making the day a very special community event.
The day wouldn't be as successful without the help of
staff and parents. Firstly, thank you to the staff of St.
Philomena's for their help and ongoing support. To our
wonderful parents who volunteered their help. Thank
you to Katie White, Steve Manhood, Peta O’Hara,
Mary Hulme, Louise Windsor, Libby Windsor, Katie
Farraway, Jayne Miller, Annette Press, Tracey
MacFarlane, Jo Thompson, Natalie Breen and Andrew
Breen. I apologise if I’ve forgotten anyone but please
be assured that we appreciate your help. Lastly, thank
you also to the many children who helped during the
day.
Congratulations to Paddy and Jack O’Hara who broke
records on the day. Paddy broke the record for the
11yrs 50m Freestyle, 11yrd 50m Breast stroke, 11yrs
50m Backstroke, 11yrs 50m Butterfly and the Senior
Individual Medley. Jack is very proud of himself for
breaking his brother’s record in the Junior 50m
Backstroke.
