FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners,

Several parishioners have been mentioning a scam that’s reared its ugly head as the April tax deadline approaches in about six or seven weeks . They also suggested I make you aware of it through our parish bulletin. It’s a telephone swindle in which you receive a purported call from the Internal Revenue Ser-vice. Your caller ID will even show a Washington, D.C. area code and possibly the I.R.S.’s actual number. The caller informs you there is a warrant out for your arrest, due to your failure to pay back taxes. If you don’t “bite” and hang up, you almost immediately get another call , and notice the caller’s area code is now in an area (perhaps in another state) where you own property or even an-other home. (By the way, the artifice is called “spoofing”: being able to doctor the supposed area code of the caller.) The caller (ostensibly the police of that other locale) repeats, “We have a warrant for your arrest”. Somehow, the combination of the two fake area-code ID’s effectively convinces the victim that all is legit. Cash is demanded immediately and, if you ask to consult an accountant or lawyer, you are reminded that time is running out. Payment via a credit card number or prepaid debit card often concludes the fraud. Don’t think you would ever fall for this? Don’t be so sure. Close to a million people have got-ten these calls in the last couple of years, and 5,000 of them kissed $26 million dollars goodbye as a result. The lessons to be learned? (1) The I.R.S. initiates the pursuit of money-owed by snail mail—they don’t phone out of the blue; (2) I.R.S. agents do not ask for credit card numbers; (3) I.R.S. agents do not threaten you with the police; (4) I.R.S. agents don’t want the stereotype of being bul-lies or harassers. If you’d like more info on this scheme, visit the following website: https://www.irs.gov/uac/IRS-Urges-Public-to-Stay-Alert-for-Scam-Phone-Calls Consider yourself now warned about this top-notch tax fraud. Remember: “Don’t pay up. Hang up.” -Father Jerry Jecewiz

ST. RAPHAEL’S “MARIACHI ACADEMY” ON TV…

The newly-opened branch of the Mariachi Academy of New York here at St. Raphael’s was the focus of a TV news segment in connection with Pope Francis’ recent pilgrimage to Mexico. Visit http://youtu.be/AOwq2u93U1M to view the piece (in English, with Spanish subtitles), to hear from its Director, Ramon Ponce, and an eager class of students, as well as to see some local shots here.

Young people (ages 7 to 17) are taught the Mari-achi instruments on Monday and Thursdays evenings. They pay for registration , their Mariachi shirt, and their music book (total charge $85), but they receive a year’s instruction free. Classes are conducted in Spanish, with some accommodation made for children who are not very proficient in Spanish.

2016 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Through this annual initiative, our Diocese aims for a goal of $8 million. Our assigned parish goal at St. Raph-ael’s remains at $37,183. The core components of Catholic Charities, Catholic Migration Services, Vocation Support, Catholic Education, Faith For-mation, Chaplaincies, Care for Retired Priests and Parish Assistance are all worthy of your personal support. We are accepting re-quests from parishioners who would like a Summary of Ac-countable Contributions Letter for 2015 tax purposes. Only those requesting this informa-tion will receive this letter. Call or visit the rectory office. Our parish survives through the generosity of those who make systematic and sacrificial contribu-tions of financial support to St. Raphael’s. We are grateful.

THIS ‘N THAT 1. Reminder: pledge payments to the Gen-

erations of Faith Capital Campaign should be made out to THE CATHOLIC FOUN-DATION OF BROOKLYN AND QUEENS. Cash payments can be made at St. Raph-ael’s and we will issue and exchange check, but please clearly indicate it’s for the Generations of Faith campaign. (Tax receipts for the Capital Campaign pledges and gifts are issued directly by them and not our parish. You should have received this by now for the 2015 tax year.

2. We’ve posted on the vestibule bulletin board the effusive, glowing New York Times review Ana Maria Martinez re-ceived when she filled in recently for an ailing Asian singer in the lead role of Puc-cini’s Madame Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera House. Ana is the daughter of our organist, Jan Wnek. The review in another paper, The Observer, also posted, like-wise acclaims her extraordinary talents. Kudos to Ana and to her family!
