FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners, Pictured below is Deacon John Hwang, ordained to the order of deacon at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, this weekend. Father Luke and I attended the Ordination Mass on Saturday. Father John will assist at the 8 am, 9:45 am and 11 am Masses here this Sunday and preach his first homily as an ordained clergyman at those liturgies. We congratulate him on this joyful occasion! Join us downstairs after the 11 am Mass today for refreshments in his honor. There are two categories of deacons in the Catholic Church nowadays: ―transitional‖ deacons on their way to the priesthood (like John, who will become a priest in June), and ―permanent‖ deacons (comprising the 13,000-plus individuals currently ministering in our country, thanks to the restoration of the

permanent diaconate by the Second Vatican Council). Whether transitional or permanent, a deacon’s functions are threefold: WORD (proclaiming, preaching and teaching the Gospel); SACRAMENT (baptizing, leading prayer, witnessing marriages, conducting wake and funeral services); and CHARITY (identifying and meeting parishioners needs with church resources and standing up against the injustices causing those needs). Long ago, St. Paul wrote that deacons must be conscientious believers in the mystery of the faith (1 Timothy 3:9). This is our prayer for Deacon John today: that God deepen the faith in his baptized and ordained heart to embrace and live the treasure

God wants broadcast to our world.

The National Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA

(AMS) is a triennial collection approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic

Bishops (USCCB) in 2012 and first taken in 2013.

The first National Collection for the AMS was timed to coincide with Veterans

Day November 2013 and raised more than $8.2 million from collections taken by

179 dioceses. The second National Collection will be taken in most dioceses

and parishes across the country at weekend Masses November 5-6, 2016.

There are many organizations that support U.S. military and their families,

but there is no other diocese or non-profit organization like the AMS. The

AMS provides the same pastoral care and services as any other Catholic dio-

cese, to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S.

Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Vet-

erans Affairs Medical Centers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, working in

civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of

these populations.

Every third year the Archdiocese for Military Services takes up collection taken every third year to help provide pastoral care and services, not only to the women and men serv-ing in the U.S. Military right now, but also to their fami-lies. Please remember this important cause in the sec-ond collection this week-end (Nov. 5th/6th). Use the special envelope provided last weekend. Extras are at the rear of the church.

1. Thank-you to all who planned, ran, and patronized our WHITE ELEPHANT sale last weekend. Because of your efforts, our parish netted $961 from the event.

2. Our Food Pantry thanks the following for their recent donations: Queen of Angels Church, Sun-nyside ($500), and the Green Valley Marketplace of Sunnyside ($100). This support is greatly appreciated and accomplishes much good.

3. This Wednesday, November 9th, the students in Grades K-8 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy, 12 Newell Street, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (about one mile from St. Raphael’s Church) will showcase the ―Catholic identity‖ of their school with a parade around the neighborhood. Come and see how proudly Catholic they are. The parade of students will leave the school ap-proximately 10 am, make a right at Nassau Avenue, a right on Humboldt Street, a right on Driggs Avenue, and conclude with a right on Newell Street. Religious and community leaders have been invited. How encouraging it would be for these students to see support of their Catho-lic education by the presence of Catholic bystanders along the parade route.

PRAYER FOR VETERANS

We ask for blessings on all those who have served their country in the armed forces. We ask for healing for the veterans who have been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the globe. We pray especially for the young men and women, in the thousands, who are coming home from Iraq with injured bodies and traumatized spirits. Bring solace to them, O Lord; may we pray for them when they cannot pray. We ask for, echoing John Paul II, an end to wars and the dawning of a new era of peace, As a way to honor all the veterans of past wars. Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the regions they fought in. Bless all the soldiers who served in non-combative posts; May their calling to ser-vice continue in their lives in many positive ways. Give us all the creative vision to see a world which, grown weary with fighting, Moves to affirming the life of every human being and so moves beyond war. Hear our prayer, O Prince of Peace, hear our prayer. Amen.

My prayer for this day is that we will restore unity in this country… that we might once again be unified as a

nation and that we will begin to see through those that try and create division for their personal gain. That

we will begin to reconcile ourselves with those whom we have alienated, and that we will work towards end-

ing the intentional disenfranchisement of those who disagree with us. Father, make it so. Amen.

1. We need to postpone our parish Talent Show until the Spring, so we can make adequate preparations. If you’d like to participate, please notify the rectory office. We’ll keep you posted once the new date is con-firmed.

2. In last week’s bulletin, we gave the sign-up schedule for this season’s Mariachi Academy at St. Raphael’s. The leadership has to adjust these days and times, so we will publicize them in this bulletin as soon as they are set.

3. On Tuesday, Nov. 15th, Sister Ave Clark and Heart to Heart Ministry returns to our parish for another Mini-Brunch Retreat: Mass in church at 9 am, followed by food and presentation in the rectory basement until about 11:30 am. Topic: ―Mercy is God’s Gift of Thanksgiving‖.

This Sunday, November 6th: 11 am—English 12:30 pm—Spanish Newly-ordained Deacon John (Pil Koo) Hwang gives his first-ever homily here at the 11 am (as well as the 8 am) English Mass. Also, in Korean at the 9:45 am Mass. Refreshments after the Family Masses downstairs in Michael Brennan Hall. Consider donating some refreshments: bring them down-stairs before the Family Mass you attend. Thanks.
