April 9th: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Last week’s church offering Average weekly expenses

FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners, As we initiate Holy Week today with Palm Sunday, please prayerfully engage in the upcom-ing religious events of this focal point of the Christian year. A schedule of services is included, in English and Spanish, in this bulletin. It also appears in the current Woodside Herald. Clip it out and post it in a conspicuous place in your home as a reminder to join and, perhaps, invite a non-practicing Catholic to ―come home‖ for Easter. This Monday is Reconciliation Monday, with all-day confessions available at all Catholic Churches in the NYC metropolitan area, including Long Island. Here at St. Raphael’s, the venue will alternate between the church or the rectory, as follows:

9:45 am to 11 am—confessions in church 11:00 am to 3:00 pm—confessions in the rectory office 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm—confessions in church 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm—confessions in the rectory office 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm—confessions in church

Father Bob Lloyd will help us with the 7:00 pm confession period in church. Our Holy Thursday Evening Mass will be trilingual, with the Korean community joining us. This is a unity we need to celebrate, especially on the occasion marking the Last Supper. The ser-vice concludes with the processional transfer of the Eucharist to the Altar of Repose for adoration. Our Good Friday service will be done three times, in each of our parish’s languages. At 4:15 pm, all will join in a religious Street Procession, accompanied by the NYPD. A simple meal of bread and soup (Supper for the Soul) , gratis, will follow in Michael Brennan Hall. On Holy Saturday, we can use a hand moving Easter flowers and plants in place to adorn our worship space to honor Jesu’ resurrection. Please join us and we’ll show you what to do. The Holy Saturday Easter Vigil and Mass of the Resurrection (bilingual) begins at 7:30 pm, with the Blessing of the New Fire, the lighting of the Easter Candle, the chanting of the Easter Proclamation and the initiation of several babies, children, and young adults. A bottle of Easter wa-ter will be given to all present, and a coffee/soda/cake reception will follow in Brennan Hall. This is the foremost act of Catholic worship there is. Finally, a clarification regarding the confusing collections of Holy Week: Palm Sunday: second collection for the care of retired priests Holy Thursday: one collection, for our Food Pantry. Rice Bowls can also be put in. Good Friday: one collection only, for the needs of the church in the Holy Land, where Jesus lived and died. Holy Saturday / Easter Sunday: second collection for Easter Offering to St. Raphael’s parish. A contribution of $100 per family is requested. As always, many thanks for your understanding and support.

-Father Jerry Jecewiz
