FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners,
You’ve probably heard some news about Pope Francis’ most recent “exhortation”, entitled REJOICE AND BE GLAD. It’s theme is that God calls us to holiness in everyday life.
“Everyday life” nowadays include technology and the internet, so it’s not surprising that the Holy Father has advice on this topic: how to be holy online.
He recognizes the verbal cruelty that often takes place online, especially in blogs chock full of poison arrows. He also regrets the proliferation of what is now called “fake news’ —what used to be called simply lying (a breaking of the Eighth Commandment since the time of Moses).
If you don’t think we need counsel on how to be holy online these days, consider the following tidbits I recently came across. They may be somewhat dated (since the numbers uptick every sec-ond!):
-YouTube uploads 400 hours of video every minute. -It would take 65 years to watch all of the content posted every day. -The author of a recent technology book voices this opinion: “If aliens wanted to understand our planet, I’d give them Google. If they wanted to understand us, I’d give them YouTube.“
In short, a little more loving kindness, advises the Pope, when we interface with our devices!
On a different topic, a word of thanks to all who engaged with the ANNUAL CATHOLIC AP-PEAL last weekend (Commitment Sunday)—or earlier on. If you did not yet respond, the info and pledge forms are available at the rear of the church. Help us reach our assigned goal as a parish! Thank you! - Father Jerry Jecewiz
