GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

"They all ate and were satisfied." Why read the miracle

of the multiplication of the loaves this Sunday? Here

we see the mystery of our physical and spiritual realities

intermingling. Too often, they can feel separate. When

we go to Mass, how often we appear more ordinarily

human rather than stretching toward the divine.

Perhaps our experience of the Eucharist is fairly

mundane. We notice when a new sacramental wine has

been selected. We feel the varying textures of the host

and wonder if they'll ever bring back the one that tasted

distinctly like wheat. As we shuffle up to the front and

stride back to our pew, we notice the looks on people's

faces and the clothes on their backs. We get distracted

by the crying child, the man blowing his nose, and the

mechanical sound of the air conditioner kicking in. How

human we are, how earth-bound, how material!

And how good God is for entering into these selfsame

realities. How good God is for proclaiming "the kingdom

of God," for "heal[ing] those who needed to be cured," for

having mercy on a tired and hungry crowd. How many of

the crowd noticed what had been done for them? Did they

realize their dinner was a miracle? How often do we miss

the deeper reality of the Eucharist? Even if in the moment

of receiving Communion we don't experience radical

ecstasy and don't feel any different, there is a tangible

reality to cling to. Our God loves us enough to become

bread for us, not only to feed us but to be fed upon by us.

tising is now being accepted for the commemorative

BIBLE Chapter 14 of the Book of Genesis relates that Melchis-

edek, the High Priest, who appears without ancestry

and without descendants (indicating eternity), offers to

Abraham a gift of bread and wine and blesses him.

Then Abraham, with the priest Levi still in his loins,

thanks him by giving tithes to this High Priest, the

“King of Salem”, the “King of Peace”. The Letter to the

Hebrews states that this is a fore-type of the Mass and

the Priesthood of Christ. Jesus is the eternal High Priest

who offers Himself once and for all on Golgotha, but

continually offers His Mystical Body in the Eucharistic

Liturgy and in the sufferings of the innocent and the

poor. When we were Baptized we became members of

his Mystical Body; when we receive Communion we eat

his flesh and grow spiritually into a more intimate union

with him.

annual Street Fair on July 11, 12, 13, from 5:30-10 p.m.

each evening on the parish grounds on First Street in

ing, live entertainment and more. Come one, come all!

pork and $200 Lowe’s gift card is now due. Please

contact Toni Terretti or Bill Pospisil. Thanks for all

your support of this 100th Anniversary fundraiser.

NEW EVANGELIZATION The Catholic Church evangelizes in many different

ways. First and foremost is the witness of individuals

living an authentically Christian life. Verbal proclamation

in a public forum by a trained evangelist and especially at

Mass by a prepared homilist is the next obvious

method. Catechetical instruction in the classroom and in

the homes is also essential in teaching the truths of our

Faith. Television, radio, the internet and other electronic

media are also important instruments in proclaiming the

Gospel, although the listener must learn to distinguish

between an opinion and the real truth. Personal contact at

home, at work, at school or in the recreation area provides

the opportunity for invitation and dialogue. Participation

in the liturgy and the sacraments offers the opportunity to

empower oneself and encourage each other.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The feast of “Corpus Christi” is the feast of the “Body

of Christ”, which signifies both his real presence in the

Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and his Mystical Body,

the Church. In the Eucharist his body and blood become

food and drink for the faithful to consume in the form of

bread and wine whereby his body and ours are joined as

one: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in

me, and I in him.” (John 6: 56) “By communicating his

Spirit, Christ mystically constitutes as his body those

brothers of his who are called together from every

nation. Three aspects of the Church as the Body of Christ

are to be noted: the unity of all members with each other

as a result of their union with Christ; Christ as head of the

Body; and the Church as the bride of Christ.” (Catechism

of the Catholic Church, ## 788, 789)
