Verbis ST RITA’S COLLEGE Dear Parents/Guardians, Our Annual Thanksgiving Celebraon (ATC) took place last Tuesday evening where we congratulated and acclaimed the academic achievement of a number of students across all Year levels. ATC was also an occasion to recognise the many ways our girls have excelled throughout the year in sporng, musical and community endeavours. I would like to take the opportunity here to more broadly congratulate all the girls who received Awards on the night. To the students who fell short of receiving an Award, be it by a large margin or small, they too are to be congratulated if they can say within their heart of hearts that they gave of their best and used the opportunies offered them throughout the year to develop their talents further. There are many of those girls. In the long run, life teaches all of us that there will be mes when we do succeed and are acclaimed and other mes when our progress and achievements are less than what we would desire. However, it is important that we keep trying and learning in order to take advantage of those moments in which we are meant to shine. In general it must be said that our College is blessed with so many friendly, energec and talented students who contribute greatly to the life of this marvellous, vibrant community of Presentaon people, and those who were featured on Tuesday night are just the p of the iceberg of talent that dwells within our student body – so something very worthwhile celebrang. ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our Annual Thanksgiving Celebration (ATC) took place last Tuesday evening where we congratulated and acclaimed the academic achievement of a number of students across all Year levels. ATC was also an occasion to recognise the many ways our girls have excelled throughout the year in sporting, musical and community endeavours. I would like to take the opportunity here to more broadly congratulate all

the girls who received Awards on the night. To the students who fell short of receiving an Award, be it by a large margin or small, they too are to be congratulated if they can say within their heart of hearts that they gave of their best and used the opportunities offered them throughout the year to develop their talents further. There are many of those girls. In the long run, life teaches all of us that there will be times when we do succeed and are acclaimed and other times when our progress and achievements are less than what we would desire. However, it is important that we keep trying and learning in order to take advantage of those moments in which we are meant to shine. In general it must be said that our College is blessed with so many friendly, energetic and talented students who contribute greatly to the life of this marvellous, vibrant community of Presentation people, and those who were featured on Tuesday night are just the tip of the iceberg of talent that dwells within our student body – so something very worthwhile celebrating.

We also celebrated the way the girls have embraced throughout the year the theme of ‘Living Justly’. It was this theme that has enriched our various endeavours over the past nine months and will be at the forefront of occasions to come heading into the end of year activities. The Year 12 initiative of #NJU has been a great awareness raising campaign for the College this year and I commend the Captains on this initiative.

And so, another year’s Annual Thanksgiving Celebration has passed and I hope you can agree with me that we have much to be grateful for. In relation to the overall organisation of the night I would like to thank in particular Ms Catherine Allen, Deputy Principal - Students. Needless to say, there were many other hands at work in making this night successful and I hope these people will forgive me for not mentioning them by name in this article, but they can be assured their efforts have been very much appreciated.

Year 12 students will commence their exam block next week. We will acknowledge and celebrate this group by sharing a breakfast at the College with staff and girls. The Year 11 girls will serve at this event to ensure the Year 12 girls have a lovely start to their day. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENTSMs Catherine AllenCongratulations to all girls who performed or were awarded prizes at ATC on Tuesday night. It is a wonderful testament to their efforts across the year. To the many others who missed out, be pleased with your efforts. If at the end of any day we can say we gave everything 100%, it has been a good day.

This week is the last week of lessons for our Seniors. Next week is exams and the following week they graduate. I would like to thank the girls and their families for all they have contributed to the College across the years. May the girls move into their futures with confidence and joy.

St Rita’s College, together with the Gastrointestinal Cancer Institute, will host a fashion parade to raise funds and awareness for gastro-intestinal (GI) cancer on Saturday 9 November. Please come along. It will be a fabulous afternoon. The GI

Cancer Institute is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of patients with gastro-intestinal cancer through developing and conducting new clinical trials. The parade will feature many local Brisbane designers and businesses. Nicole Rowles (Channel Nine) will MC the event, with special appearances from some of Brisbane’s leading doctors. The College community will pay tribute to some of our beloved students who have unfortunately lost their battle with cancer. Tickets are available now, $50/person. Please click here to purchase. Thanks to Immogen Newcombe-Bennion who has done a wonderful job coordinating this event. The eSafety Commissioner website has been refreshed. It is a wonderfully comprehensive and interactive online safety hub, that includes tailored advice and resources. Take a look by clicking here.

Annual Thanksgiving Celebration (ATC)ATC this week was a celebration of the academic success of our students. I would like to congratulate the Award winners and all students who continue to give their best in their academic learning.

Students will gain faster access to their results if they have previously activated their Learning account. Please ensure you have activated your learning account before 8 November.

Published SAIsYear 12 students are reminded to check their Subject Achievement Indicators (SAIs) when they are published at school. The final date for these SAIs to be available to students is Wednesday 20 November 2019. This check may eliminate errors in SAIs not picked up by the school, such as OP-eligibility, students being mixed up with others with the same name, and unusual gaps between students that do not reflect their positions in the class. The SAIs will be located in Student Reception. SAIs cannot be emailed to students, nor can the sheet of student information be photographed. Students and/or parents must come into Student Reception to view the information. Please note that SAIs are only applicable to ‘Large Group’ subjects (student enrolments of 14 or more).

Next Step Survey ResultsSix months after Year 12 students finish school, the Queensland Government conducts a Next Step Survey to ascertain the pathways students have taken post-school. We are very proud of the number of students who have engaged in further study and sought employment. In 2019, 96% of students who completed Year 12 at St Rita's College in 2018 continued in some recognised form of education and/or training in the year after they left school. The most common study destination was a Bachelor Degree (79.3%) with 84.7% continuing in some form of education.

QUT Future LeadersCongratulations to Ella Scotford (Year 12) and Bridget Palmer (Year 12) who graduated from the QUT Future Leaders Program. Ella and Bridget have been participants in this leadership program for the past two years. Over this time they experienced many workshops designed to inspire and promote leadership. The program allows students to participate in various networking opportunities with students from various schools. The students are mentored by current QUT students, as well as lecturers and professors. The program also provided Ella and Bridget with an insight into university life.

Longreach ImmersionAt our College Assembly last week, students who participated in the Longreach Immersion over the September holidays shared their reflection on their experience. In this week’s edition of Verbis, I would like to share this with you:

On 22 September, nine Year 11 students set off on an amazing trip to Longreach for a taste of outback life. We returned with many memories. Breanna, Gabby and Alicia had the privilege of staying at Noonbah Station with the Emmott family. The family welcomed us with open arms and amazing food. Every day, we helped with daily household chores like feeding the animals and collecting the chicken eggs and we were lucky enough to bottle feed baby joeys twice a day. We did a lot of exploring, swam in the dam, milked a cow and watched them muster cattle with helicopters. We met many members of the Emmott family and their friends and had an BBQ under the stars and a huge fire. Many stories were shared over ‘smoko’ and meal times. The hospitality of our host family was amazing. Zoe and Libby stayed with the Laidler family on their property called Kappa Ki. It was a full on four days, for when we weren’t at the house, we were out mustering, drafting, shearing the sheep, sorting and pressing the wool. We also got to participate in a true Longreach engagement party and were lucky enough to enjoy several delicious homemade goods for ‘smoko’ each day. Molly, Beth, Grace and Alessia stayed at the Mims family property – which was a 1.5 hour drive out of Longreach. At the farm, we cleaned troughs, painted doors, checked water levels, drove buggies and motorbikes, went to the dinosaur museum, played lots of cards, and of course, made tik-toks. After our four days with our host family, we went back into Longreach for the final two days of our immersion experience. We watched a show at the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, shopped around town, visited the QANTAS Museum and spent our last night on a cruise of the Thomson River. We also visited Our Lady’s Primary School which was established by the Presentation Sisters in 1900. Seeing and taking part in this first-hand was truly an amazing experience and while it may seem like a lot at first, we highly recommend this immersion for anyone considering participating in future years.

Fashion Parade in Support of GI CancerOn Saturday 9 November, St Rita’s College and the Gastrointestinal Cancer Institute will host a fashion parade to raise funds and awareness for gastro-intestinal (GI) cancer. The GI Cancer Institute is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of patients with gastro-intestinal cancer through developing and conducting new clinical trials. The parade will feature the work of many local Brisbane designers and businesses. Nicole Rowles (Channel Nine) will emcee the event, with special appearances from some of Brisbane’s leading doctors. Click here to purchase tickets via TryBooking. Money raised for the GI Cancer Institute funds clinical trials, helping to provide Australians with faster access to new treatments than if these clinical trials were run overseas. This research helps improve treatment, raising the life expectancy and quality of life for people diagnosed with digestive cancers.

Graduation Mass and CeremonyThe Graduation Mass and Ceremony will be held at the College on Wednesday 13 November from 9:00am in the Eirene Centre. Doors open at 8:20am for guests requiring assistance and 8:30am for all other guests. All guests are required to be seated by 8:55am. The celebration will finish at approximately 12:00 noon. Dress for guests is smart casual. Year 12

students will be required to wear College uniform including hat and blazer. GIVING DAYMrs Anna Roberts - Manager, Community Development

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS AND DIVERSE LEARNING NEEDSMs Gail Murton, Mrs Rebecca Rylands and Mrs Kerrie Burton

The College’s inaugural Giving Day on Thursday 24 October drew together the outstanding support from current and past families, incoming families, students, alumnae and staff. An overwhelming success was experienced for the College’s first major fundraising project.

Donations were quadrupled on the day of Giving, thanks to the generosity of a handful of pre-secured donations including those from the College Parents & Friends and Alumnae along with other individual givers.

The money raised will assist in the fit out of the Trinity Building – our new Learning Centre - which all girls will be using from next year. If you did miss Giving Day and would like to be one of the many amazing people of St Rita’s who supported this effort, it is definitely not too late. Donations are still being taken and are tax-deductible. Please call or email Mrs Anna Roberts, the College’s Manager of Community Development on 3862 1615 or [email protected]

Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) 2020All StudentsThe Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) recognises that some students have disability, impairment and/or medical conditions, or experience other circumstances that may be a barrier to their performance in assessment. ST RITA'S COLLEGE CAULFIELD CUP LADIES DAYMrs Anna Roberts - Manager, Community DevelopmentA superb afternoon on Saturday 19 October was enjoyed by more than 250 sponsors, parents, alumnae, staff and friends at the St Rita’s College Caulfield Cup Ladies Day at Eagle Farm. The event raised funds for the Sports program of the College.

Eagle Farm was packed with racegoers for the first official day of the Spring Racing Carnival. Despite the intermittent rain, our large group in The Birdcage enjoyed an afternoon of food and beverages, tips by respected trainer Chris Anderson, a few thrills and spills with the Bookmaker and Tote, and for a few special sponsor guests, a trip to the barriers to watch the start of their race or a visit to the Race Caller's tower to hear their race called and experience the view from the vantage point. It was a magnificent day and another St Rita’s event that will be fondly remembered for some time.

Sincere thanks go to Mrs Julie-Ann Watt and Ms Emma Goldman for their organisation of the day and for the assistance of Mrs Karen Camilleri in sourcing raffle prizes for the event. These events can’t be held without the support of our parents and our appreciation can never be extended enough for their efforts.

However, our principal thanks are extended to our Sponsors and to our Prize donors and to each our sincere gratitude is conveyed. Of particular note is the support from Major Sponsor, HMW Group, and that of Clayfield Jewellery and Trevor Sim who not only sponsored a Race, but also donated first prize in Fashions on the Field and allowed Julie, Emma and myself to wear and showcase a selection of the business’s stunning jewels for the day. I would hope that our families will look to these businesses first when considering products or services they offer.

Anyone who attended Race Day will attest to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Thank you to everyone who supported the event and who by doing so has support our incredibly talented sports playing students.

Bee CommitteeIn our 2019 Year of Justice, Nagle House has been advocating for change and the importance of the environment. During the year, Nagle House formed the Bee Committee which advocated for the importance bees hold in society. Bees are extremely beneficial to the environment due to their pollination services which help to provide food in the form of fruits, berries, nuts, leaves, roots and seeds. Arguably, it is the most interesting parts of our diet that are reliant on bees, and other pollinators, for cross pollination. This intuitive consisted of passionate girls that worked together to build awareness and make a change.

Tree PlantingNagle has also continued with the tree planting program at Kalinga Park. Enthusiastic Nagle girls and girls from other Houses worked together to improve our environment. Many girls this year gave up their afternoons to be involved in tasks such as weeding, watering and planting. Trees provide clean air by absorbing chemicals such as nitrogen oxide and dust particles. Nagle’s initiative enabled girls within the College to contribute to the environment, making them Women of Action.

Kildare Car WashKildare Car Wash was a great success, raising $315. The girls had a lot of fun working together to make the cars sparkle each House Group washed approximately five to six cars. Thank you to all staff that donated their cars to support the fundraiser and thank you to the Kildare students and House Group staff for their hard work and positive attitude. All money raised will be put towards St Joseph’s Primary School Christmas hampers.

St Joseph’s Primary School Christmas HampersKildare are putting together Christmas Hampers for the St Joseph’s Primary School families in Murgon. We will present these Hampers at our last Whole School Assembly on 29 November. Each House Group will be given a Santa sack in which to put the gifts and we encourage you to start bringing in items that suit your families. It would be great to have all donations by our next House Assembly on Tuesday 19 November so we can see what we need to purchase to top up the Santa sack.

• K1: Rebecca, single mother. Boy 13, girl 11, girl 8, girl 5, plus two small children under 3. Food items would be good. They don’t have a lot and really struggle.

• K2: Mother, single. Girl 11, girl 8. The girls do not have a lot and would love some hair accessories and clothes (sizes 12 and 8).

• K3: Mother, single. Girl 9, girl 7, boy 5. Food would be great and any clothing (sizes 12-14 girl, 10 girl, 8 boy).

• K4: Mother, single. Boy 6. They live in a house with 13 others. The mother has two other children under 2. The boy aged 6 loves colouring in, letter sheets, felt tips and colour by number sheets.

• K5: Mother and Father. Girl 14, girl 12, girl 10, boy 7. • K6: Mother and Father. Girl 8, girl 6. • Kildare as a group: Mother single + a lot of families where a small food

hamper would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and Kildare Christmas spirit. Mrs Irvine and Mr Rogusz will be taking 20 girls to Murgon to deliver the gifts and play with the children on either Monday 2 or Tuesday 3 December. MUSICMr Craig Kennedy - Head of Cocurricular Music

Music GalaThe Music Gala is always a wonderful night of celebration where we can take a moment to reflect back on the year and also recognise the achievements and growth through the years by the Year 12 Music cohort. While our music program aims to produce excellence in whatever we do, what I hope for most is that we provided an opportunity for our Year 12 students to become confident and energetic young people who have a deep love for music and truly know it’s worth; people who are able to empathise and give joy to others through their own toil; people who know the challenges of performing and can take those into every aspect of their lives ahead. I have seen many of these girls at their most buoyant and also in some of their less buoyant moments and that is a privilege to know that the Music Department is like an extended family to many of our students and is a place where they feel comfortable to express themselves. Our Year 12s have each taken their own journey, but they can leave knowing that whichever approach they have taken, each of them will be leaving their own mark on the St Rita’s Music department.
