Protecting God’s Children / Virtus Training

The CMG Safe Haven online training is replacing the VIRTUS training. The training consists of 3

vignette style training videos that is approximately 60 minutes and will include a criminal background check that must be completed. These trainings are available in English and Spanish. We will no longer offer live trainings, all Safe Environment train-ings will only be available online.

• All new employees and volunteers will complete the Safe Haven online training program instead of VIRTUS PGC training. The turnaround time for approval may be approximately two weeks or less.

• All individuals must complete the training and complete a background check prior to the start of employment and/or volunteer service.

• The 5-year anniversary date is still in place, individuals who recently attended VIRTUS will not be due to com-plete refresher trainings until they have met their 5-year anniversary date.

• As the 5-year anniversary date is met, individuals will need to log into CMGConnect with their previous personal VIRTUS user id and 1234 as the password. Once the individual logs into their CMGConnect account, they will be able to change their password. If they do not remember the user id, they may contact the following:

1. Kathy Boscarino @ 936-295-8159 or [email protected] 2. Daphne Woods at 800.228.6108 ext. 2375 or [email protected] 3. CMG at [email protected]

The following individuals below will now be required to complete Safe Haven online training as well:

1. Individuals who have never attended training. 2. Individuals who are currently due for refresher training and had not attended VIRTUS training. 3. Individuals who are currently due and have not attended VIRTUS training. 4. Individuals who are out of compliance or past due.

The Fire of Your Love: A Manual for Men

By Will Oliver

Over the past six months, there has not been a lot of good news coming from our Bishops. Whether scandals or politics, the news has been rather bleak. Fortunately, there is at least one Bishop who has been doing something worthwhile that is both timely and well needed. That Bishop is Thomas J. Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix, Arizona. Bishop Olmsted recently published an Apostolic Exhortation to the Husbands and Wives, Mothers and Fathers of the Diocese of Phoenix. It has received very positive reviews and while I have printed it out, I have yet to read it (it will most assuredly be the topic of a future column). What I have read was his other Apostolic Exhortation from three years ago titled Into the Breach: An Apostolic Exhortation to Catholic Men, My Spiritual Sons in the Diocese of Phoenix. Though both are written to members of his own diocese, what he has to say applies to every Catholic. As a Bishop, he is clearly leading his flock. The Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted is a farm boy originally from Kansas who was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1973. He has held numerous positions in the Church and was called to serve as coadjutor then Bishop of Wichita, Kansas, before being installed as the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix on December20,2003. Recognizing a sea change in our culture regarding men, mostly toward the negative (just think of the recent Gillette Commercial), he wrote his Apostolic Exhortation to all Catholic men. His opening words should gain the attention and resonate with every man in the Catholic Church: “I begin this letter with a clarion call and clear charge to you, my sons and brothers in Christ: Men, do not hesitate to engage in the battle that is raging around you, the battle that is wounding our children and families, the battle that is distorting the dignity of both women and men. This battle is often hidden, but the battle is real. It is primarily spiritual, but it is progressively killing the remaining Christian ethos in our society and culture, and even in our own homes.” Throughout his 23 page exhortation, the Bishop addresses not only what it means to be a committed Catholic man, but how to live life as one. He also writes on the topic of how a Catholic man should love as a friend, a husband, and a father. Finally, he discusses one of the most important, yet seemingly neglected roles of men in today’s culture, and that is fatherhood. He explains what it means to be a father, why it is important, and why it is crucial for every man to fulfill the role of being a committed Catholic Father after receiving the sacrament of holy matrimony. The entire document can be found online, particularly at the Diocese of Phoenix’s website. Even better though is the small bound book from TAN Publishers titled Manual for Men by Bishop Olmsted (2018). The first part of this 304 page book is the Apostolic Exhortation written by the good Bishop, while the second and longer part of the book includes information about what the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Scripture say about living the life of a Catholic man. The book also includes good role models for Catholic men as are found in the lives of the Saints, and a number of Catholic prayers are included, all of which have the man in mind.

Men, if ever there was someone in the Catholic Church speaking directly to us as Catholic men, it is Bishop Olmsted; this is a must read.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors facing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
