Reflecting on the Word The commandment of Jesus with which today’s Gospel ends is a bit shocking: “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Surely Jesus asks too much here. No hu-man being can be perfect in the way that God is perfect. The shock of this commandment is intensified by what has come before it - some of Jesus’ most demanding teachings: not re-taliating when attacked, giving to those who ask, and loving our enemies. How could any person possibly be perfect in doing these things? But we have no indication that Jesus does not mean what he says here. Indeed, with regard to loving our enemies Jesus draws a direct parallel between how God acts and how we are to act. Just as God does not discriminate in bestowing the goods of nature between those who love God and those who do not, so too we should not discriminate between friends and enemies when doing good. This may not seem to the world to be an obvious path to happiness and prosperity, but it is unde-niably the way of God What would it mean in practice to love someone whom I
considered an enemy? What sort of things might I do? - from “Living the Word”

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
Archbishop’s Annual Appeal: As we start the fourth and final week of our month-long drive for AAA, may I renew the call to everyone to come onboard and help us complete this important annual project to assist the Archbishop in his ministries at the Archdiocese. The principles involved in this are absolutely beautiful and biblical. We help with the preaching of the good news. We encourage the Archdiocese to continue to do its good works in the three counties. We strengthen the Archdiocese with the resources it needs for helping others in terms of faith and service, peace and justice. I thank the couple who spoke at all the Masses last weekend: Bill and Suzette Lunsford. This weekend at the Masses, Mike and Annette Belmessieri will speak reminding us of the need to donate generously to AAA. Let’s all keep in mind that we are God’s stew-ards. God has entrusted us with many blessings and gifts and talents. We need to give back to God and community. The more generous we are, the more the church will be able to share the good news with the world. Please find the names of all the donors in the bulletin. That’s my way of acknowledging and thank-ing you for your donations.
Confirmation: This Sunday 78 of our young men and women are going to be sealed with the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confirmation. What a blessing it is for them and their families---and to our parish commu-nity! Let the tongues of the Spirit’s fire touch their hearts and make them burn with love and faith. We are proud of their commitment to God and community through this sacrament. It’s only a beginning. There is so much that they can do after the sacrament---and because of the sacrament of Confirmation. So many people have worked hard to prepare these men and women for Confirmation. I thank them all for their selfless service. I would like to specially thank Most Reverend Robert McElroy for conferring the Sacra-ment of Confirmation on them and inspiring them to live lives worthy of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Mardi Gras Dinner-Dance: On March 01, we will have this dinner-dance to celebrate our fellowship and raise funds for Capital Campaign. Come one, come all! We need many participants to make this a success-ful event. Please buy the tickets from the office or af-ter select weekend Masses.
Word of God: Jesus continues to speak powerfully and insightfully in the Sermon of the Mount. He wants us to go beyond eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth moral-ity. Also, he calls us to love our enemies. Easier said than done! But Christianity always challenges us to journey toward the ideals of universal peace and fel-lowship. Are we willing to hear Jesus’ voice today and follow him more closely? Pope Francis’ Inspiring Words on Marriage to En-gaged Couples on Valentine’s Day. Reported by the Associated Press: Pope Francis offered some Valentine’s Day advice for a lasting marriage, telling 25,000 lovebirds that the recipe for success lies in saying three simple words: “Please, thanks, and sorry.” “Never finish the day without making peace!” he begged them. “Because if you end the day without making peace, what you have inside becomes hard and cold and it becomes harder to make peace the follow-ing day.” Francis has often lamented how many marriages end in divorce and has blamed such failed relationships on today's prevailing “provisional culture” that makes people unwilling to make lifelong commitments. Originally the audience was due to be held inside a Vatican auditorium. But the response from soon-to-wed couples to Francis’ invitation for a Valentine’s Day date was so great - Vatican officials said 25,000 people from 30 countries showed up - that the event was held in the piazza on a perfect, sunny afternoon after weeks of rain. Francis joked that we all make mistakes and that no one is perfect: “The perfect family doesn't exist, nor the perfect husband nor wife. Let's not even talk about the perfect mother-in-law!” Religious Joke: The Garden Of Eden: A Brit, a Frenchman and a Russian are viewing a painting of Adam and Eve frolicking in the Garden of Eden. “Look at their reserve, their calm,” muses the Brit. “They must be British.” “Nonsense,” the Frenchman disagrees. “They're so carefree and beautiful. Clearly, they are French.” “No clothes, no shelter,” the Russian points out, “they have only an apple to eat, and they're being told this is paradise. Clearly, they are Russian.” Your Friend & Pastor,
Father Charles Puthota
