Words of Wisdom “The People of God need to be guided by pastors whose lives are spent in service to the Gospel. I ask parish communities to continue praying that the Lord will send workers to His harvest.”

Mass of Ordination Bishop Joseph A. Pepe invites all parishioners of the Diocese of Las Vegas to join him in celebrating our four seminarians at the Mass of Ordination on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at 6:00 PM at the Guardian Angel Cathedral.

A light reception will follow in Anderson Hall. Let us give thanks to almighty God for these men, and for their generous response to serve God's people in the Diocese of Las Vegas.

Pentecost ~ June 3rd & 4th In celebration of this day of miracles when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and everyone in the crowd could understand what they were saying, despite the fact they all spoke different languages, we will hear a prayer for peace in a different language. Remember to wear red to Mass on Pentecost

Catholic Charities Thrift Store Closures Discontinuation of Clothing Donations

Catholic Charities thrift stores are closed and the organization will no longer be accepting donations of used clothes, furniture, or household goods for resale.

Due to this new policy our parish will no longer be accepting donations of clothing. Please take your items directly to Goodwill since Catholic Charities is now partnering with this worthy cause for used donations.

Super Summer Sandwich Helpers!

The St. Viator Community Service Committee (SVCSC) invites you to help Catholic Charities feed their clients over the summer. There is a great need for this special assistance since many regularly contributing organizations do not meet during the summer months.

Our goal is to make and bag a minimum of 150 lunches twice a month during June, July and August.

Lunches consist of two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a drink, & a snack or bag of chips.

How Can You Help? 1. Volunteer to make and bag lunches on the

first and third Sunday of the month starting June 4 at 11:00 AM in the Parish Center Hall.

2. Donate peanut butter, jelly, large sized lunch bags, a snack or chips, and/or drinks to the food bank during the summer. Please indicate these are for lunches by writing SVCSC on them.

3. Do both! Volunteer to make lunches AND donate items.

If you have questions regarding the summer lunch program, contact Bob Schill at [email protected] or 702.897.1052.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On the weekend of May 28, our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and the Catholic University of America (CUA). Your donation to CCC helps bring the gospel message to the public square and invite all to encounter the love of God. As people access more and more information on mobile devices, there is an increased need to provide faith resources on these platforms, for example free podcasts of daily readings and email subscriptions in both English and Spanish so people everywhere are able to experience the Scriptures and are never far from the Word of God. Half of the funds collected will remain here in the diocese to fund our local communications projects such as the Sunday Television Mass. The other half will fund national communications efforts and international projects in developing countries. Your donation to CUA, the one and only national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, will provide scholarships to support highly qualified students in their intellectual growth. CUA strives to nurture, grow, and develop global citizens and leaders with the singular ability to think and act with purpose, through both reason and faith, the kind of citizens and leaders needed by the Church and the world now more than ever. Thank you for your ongoing generosity. Your support of the Catholic Communication Campaign and Catholic University of America will help to enrich society and invite all to encounter the love of God. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas

Continuing Chess Champions Win Triple Crown

When it comes to dominance in sports, several teams come to mind: the Yankees in baseball, Bulls in basketball, and Patriots in football.

Add one more to the list of dominating teams: St. Viator in chess.

Our Parish School Chess Club has won the Catholic Schools Chess Tournament the last eight years in a row.

They capped it off this year by sweeping the 2017 Nevada State Scholastic Chess Championship in all three categories they were eligible.

They won Kindergarten-8th Grade three times before this year, K-5 twice, and K-3 four times. But this is the first time they won all three divisions the same year. (Since SVS only goes up to 8

th Grade, they were ineligible for the K-12

category.)

Students compete in only one of the three divisions and play someone with the same ranking – they could compete against someone several grades above them.

As in any sport, victory comes after hard work. The Chess Team started classes this year in August, meeting three times a week from 7 to 7:45am (proving that the early bird not only gets the worm, but the chess trophies).

Under the auspices of their coaches, Daniel Morgan and Virgil Reyes, students pair off and play, getting advice along the way.

Why is the program so successful? “First and foremost, the parents of these kids are supportive, getting the students to the club, extra lessons, tournaments etc.,” Coach Dan said. “Second, the beginners get a solid foundation for their game in which to build on. We make them think about what makes sense to do. We guide them, but they really teach themselves. Third, they work at it and they help each other get better. Last but not least, the students have a really, really good coach in Virgil Reyes (a U.S. Chess Federation Certified Chess Instructor).”

“Chess Club teaches us to have good sportsmanship,” said 6

th Grader Elora Palacio. “Win or lose you’ve

done your best and you can learn from it.”

Her mother, Aileen, adds to that perhaps a greater benefit: “As a parent at St. Viator for nine years, this is by far the one extracurricular activity that does live by the school motto ‘Act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God and each other.’ “

Congratulations to the coaches and the members of the 2017 State Chess Championship Team: Cruz Alcaraz, Denton Bond, Braydon Bond, Brendan Cabael, Brayden Cabael, Anneliz Cadiz, Alexander Chang, Benedicto Chang, Gabriel Clemente, Arrianah Galvan, Nathan Galvan, Nathan Jobin, Liberty Leano, Bryce McKnight, Derek McKnight, Asher Morse, William Morse, Cyrus Nobleza, Vincent Palacio, Elora Palacio, Dylan Ralston, and Jin Yu.
