Pastor's Desk

Despite our opportunities for gathering together being limited, we continue as a parish to unite in prayer for one another. Last month, we prayed together with our youth as they received the gifts of the Holy Spirit through their Confi rmation.

This month, please join me and our Faith Formation team in praying for our First Communion children. In this unique time, the families have been doing a “virutal retreat” in their fi nal Sacrament preparations. We thank the parents for partnering with our Faith Formation team to help their children

When it was learnt that there were weeds among the wheat, the master’s slaves asked him if he wanted them to pull the weeds. But he answered “No, let the weeds grow with the wheat.” And, so it is in life that darkness coexists with the goodness. We see this at all levels, in the world, in organizations, in the church, and in ourselves.

Prompt: Why do you suppose it is that God allows “the weeds to grow with wheat?

Prompt: Talk about a time this past week or before when an awareness of your “weeds” made you more humble and receptive to the “wheat” that God wants to produce in your heart.

Next Sunday's Readings July 19 | 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading | Wisdom 12:13, 16-192nd Reading | Romans 8:26-27Gospel | Mathew 13:24-30

We humans are a bundle of inconsistencies. At times we shine with Christ’s light and at other times our mood turns dark. At times we radiate goodness and at other times we can act towards other in very small and petty ways. We might say these inconsistencies are our own experience of the weeds and the wheat coexisting within us.

Prompt: Talk about a time this past week or before when you became aware of your own version of weeds and wheat coexisting within you.

Today’s second reading from Romans 8:26-27 says in eff ect, “The Spirit comes to our aid when we feel most weak or don’t know how to pray. And so the God who searches our hearts sends the Spirit who intercedes for us.”

Prompt: Talk about a time this past week or before when you felt presence of the Spirit in your prayer.

Prompt: Talk about a time this past week or before when you found it hard to pray and didn’t feel the consoling presence of the Spirit praying within you. How was that for you?

receive Jesus for the fi rst time. Thank you also to Sara Svenby and our Faith Formation team for all the time and love they have given our children in preparing for this special encounter with Jesus.

As a parish, surely our thirst for the Eucharist during these past few months have also been a beautiful model for our youth. While we cannot gather as a parish family to celebrate with the children on their special day, please join me in praying for them as they approach the altar in their First Communion and each time they receive Communion. May they deeply know of His presence in their lives, and go forth to be the face and hands of Jesus as they are united with Him in Eucharist.
