Baptisms are scheduled for the 2nd/4th Sundays of the month after 11 a.m. Mass (12:30 p.m.) Marriages: Couples intending to marry should call at the rectory at least SIX MONTHS prior to the marriage. It is required to have copies of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation records if these sacraments are not received at St. Vincent. Wedding times on Saturday are at 2 PM. Parish School of Religion (PSR) Pre-School - 8th: Classes are September through May. Classes are held in St. Vincent Grade School on Sundays from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (Becoming Catholic): Presentations begin in September: For information, call 330-535-3135. Hospital/Sick/Shut-in Visitation: Please notify the Rectory when a parishioner is hospitalized, shut-in, or ill. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription "Title of the Cross," and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR
This weekend at our Saturday evening 5 PM Mass, those eighth-graders who are preparing for confirmation were presented and prayed for at the celebration of Eucharist. They will be confirmed by Bishop Roger Gries at a Friday evening Mass, March 10, at 7 PM.
All parishioners are welcome to join in the celebration of their being fully initiated into our Catholic Christian faith. Ideally the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, first Eucharist, r econc i l i a t i on ( con fe s s i on) , matrimony, and anointing of the sick should be celebrated within the context of the gathered parish community. Sacraments are to be experienced as personal encounters with the Lord Jesus Christ, but not as private events. A very important element of every sacrament is the faith of the believers gathered giving witness and prayerful support to those experiencing a specific sacrament. We encourage baptisms to be celebrated within the weekend parish Masses. This more clearly expresses that those to be baptized are initiated into a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ in and through the Church, the Body of Christ. Of course, there are circumstances in which baptisms can be done on an individual basis. As a parish, we are called in many ways to look out for one another, to pray for one another, and to reach out to our wider community.

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE
As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today's Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It's only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because
our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week's readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. DEMKEE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Demkee Family Scholarship Fund of the Catholic Community Foundation provides an annual academic scholarship to a registered parishioner of a Catholic parish in Summit or Wayne County who is presently enrolled at The University of Akron or satellite branch. Students eligible to apply: are currently accepted to, or enrolled in, as part-time or full-time students at The University

Note: though financial need will be considered, it is not the sole factor in award selection.
The 2017 scholarship award will be $1,015. Applications are due by May 1 to The Catholic Community Foundation. Written notification to the awardee will be mailed by May 15.
