Vincentian Reflection: It is incredible that the invited guests could refuse to come to such a significant and lavish banquet! But we are invited to a feast even more lavish and we, too, can fail to see its sig-nificance and fail to prepare ourselves. Our everyday living is not inconsequential-even the little things we do are helping us put on our own wedding garment. Our continual conver-sions from sin prepare us for the feast of heaven. (Living Liturgy, p. 252)

The mountain of the Lord described in today’s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The re-sponsorial psalm contin-ues to paint a picture of a

place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and con-

tinues to call us through-out our lives. L e t u s

The Knights of Columbus invite the parish to join them for a Baby Shower in Honor of Our Blessed Mother at 9:30 am on Sunday, October 22 in Craven Hall. Cake and punch will be served. Real Life Pregnancy Center and moth-ers in need in Marshall County will be the recipi-ents of the gifts. Suggested items in include lay-ette items: onesies, t-shirts, socks, receiving blankets, towels, washcloths, infant outfits, and items of this nature.

Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you. Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Muslims and be-coming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother’s death when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary’s order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mystical prayer and John of the Cross’ collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has

God, lacks nothing. When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace-—and humor. Discovered devouring leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, “When I

fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!” To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the con-vent schedule, she retorted: “What we really need around here are fewer

starry eyes and more strong arms!” God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are her “Breviary Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

-Peter
